SOOT BLOWER FOR DOUBLE WALLED BOILER SETTINGS Filed Oct. 9, 1942 3 Sheets-Sheet 3 Patented Feb. 29, 1944 SOOT BLOWER FOR DOUBLE WALLED BOILER SETTINGS De Los E. Hibner and Fred C. Arey, Du Bois, Pa... assignors to Vulcan Soot Blower Corporation, a corporation of Pennsylvania Application October 9, 1942, Serial No. 461,408
3 Claims.
The present invention relates to soot blower means, particularly as applied to installations in which the boiler setting is provided with double walls spaced apart from'each other; and has for its object to make it possible to cause all-of the blower apparatus except a few simple actuating parts, to be concealed within vtheplace between-the sections of the double wall on which the units are mounted. 1
When the heads of theblower units are 10-.
cated between the two sections of the double wall, the outer Wall section may be removed without disturbing the blower installation, provided that the external actuating means does not interfere. A further object of'the present invention is so to construct and arrange the actuatingmechanism that it can easily be applied to 'orbe removed from the blower apparatus at will; thereby simplifying the work of installing the system and of removing the outer wall section. The various features of novelty where- 'by our invention is characterized will hereinafter be pointed out with particularity in the bodying the present invention, arranged one upon the other; Fig. 2 is a vertical section on a larger scale than Fig. 1, showing only the lower blower unit, in section; Fig. 3 is a section on a somewhat larger scale than Fig. l on line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4. is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 2, only the extension of the rotatable: blower element and the part of the actuator surrounded thereby being shown; Fig. 5 is an elevational view, on a smaller scale than Fig. 1, looking at the boiler from the outside, lengthwise of the blower element and illustrating an actuating fmeans common to all of the units; and Fig. 6
conventional type; and, all three may be alike. Each unit includes a head'4 adapted tobe supplied with steam or other cleaning fluid through an inlet pipe 5; the corresponding tubular blower element extending at one end into and being rotatable in the head. It will be seen that the heads 4 are mounted on the inner wall section with the space between the two sections and independently of the outer section.
Details of the blower units and their actuators, as well as of their mountings, are shown more fully in Figs. 2 4 in which one of the complete units and its actuator is illustrated. It will be seen from Fig.- 2 that the jetting or blower element? is provided with a tubular extension 6 that passes entirely through and is rotatable in the head 4 secured in any available way to the outer side of the inner wall section. The members 3 and B are connected together by a suitable coupling sleeve i which serves also as a shoulder to prevent the extension from being drawn outwardly through the head. Surrounding the extension, just beyond the outer side of the head, is a detachable collar 8. Therefore the extension is held against lengthwise movement relatively to the head by the sleeve 1 and the collar '8, until the collar is removed.
The member 6 contains an imperforate partition 9 extending across the interior thereof toward its outer end. A short distance inwardly from the partition 9 are the usual ports I0 which permit steam or other cleaning fluid to pass from the head into the member 6. Within the head, and surrounding the member 6 toward the free end of the latter, is a suitable packing II to prevent steam escaping in the outward direction past the member 6 from the interior of the head.
The actuator for turning the blower element is shown as comprising a shaft l2 that is aligned with the blower element and extends through a stufiing box 14 and in the outer well section B. The member 6 and I2 are provided with suitable interlocking parts that are engaged with each other upon moving the member l2 inwardly, and which constitute a driving connection "by means of which the actuator and the blower element rotate in unison when the actuator is turned. In the arrangement shown, the outer end of the member 6 contains a square hole l5 while the shaft l2 has a squared end Hi that fits loosely into this hole. This part I6 of the actuator is shown as having in one side a deep longitudinal groove ll into which extends a pin [8 fixed in the wall of the member 6. The'pin and groove in unison with each other. Iig. 1, the actuator for the middle unit has connection insures that the actuating shaft will always be in the same angular position relatively to the blower element when coupled thereto.
The shaft I2 extends for some'distance outwardly from the stuffing box l4 and is supported at its outer end in a bearing in an upright plate or bar [9 which is in turn supported from studs 20 extending outwardly from a pair of oppositely projecting vertical arms 2| on the stufiing box.
On the shaft i2, in the space between the arms 2| of the, plate [9, are one or more sprocket wheels. In the arrangement-shown in Fig.- 2 there are two of these wheels,' 23 and 24, locked to the shaft by means of a strong key 22 against rotation relatively thereto. "The sprocket wheel 23 is provided with a lateral projection'25 that is adapted to strike against lugs 26 and 21 on the plate 89 at the limits f the angle through which the blower element must be moved. Either of the two sprocket wheels may constitute the driven wheel while the-other serves as-a driver for the next higher unit.
-It'will beseen that the actuatingshaft or the entire'actuator can be detached without in any way disturbing the blower unit proper. thewall B can be taken down and rebuilt with the assurance that the blower-element remains properly disposed with respect to the boiler tubes with which it is-associated.
-When there are several blower units in what maybe termed a battery, as shown, each unit may be operatedin any way best suited for the provided for operating all three blower elements Thus,---as shown in able way, while, by means of suitable sprocket chains, the wheel 23 drives the wheel 28 and the wheel 29 drives the-wheel-30. -If the wheels are all alike, the three blower elements will turn in unison through equal'angles when the lower element 3 is turned, the maximum angle through which any element can be turned being determined by the lugs 23 and 21 and'the projection In Figs. and 6 is shown a simple'means for operating all of the units, in unison with the other, through the turning of a single handle. There an endless sprocket chain 3| connects together the sprocket wheels 23 and 28, while another endless chain runs aroundthe'wheels 29 and 30. The sprocket wheel 24 is driven by an endless chain 34 that passes around a small hand 38. 'The casing 36 may be mounted on-any' suitable support, such as D, atany-point fromwhich it is convenient to run a sprocket chain to the wheel 24.
It will thus be seen thatwe have produced a simple and novel soot 'blower'system in whichv no'parts of the soot blowers,=-proper,- lie onthe exterior of a double walled I boiler-setting, im-
proving the appearance of the power plantand making "it easier to-keep theouterwall surfaces cleanfthat where" thefurnace is-op'erating under So also,
forced draft, the openings in the walls to permit operation of the blower elements from the outside are sealed to prevent escape of combustion gases into the boiler room; that permits repairs to be made with a minimum amount of disturbance of the soot blower system; and that permits the entire outer wall or casing, of a double Wall construction to be remove'd' without disturbin'g'the soot blower units.
While we have illustrated and described with particularity only a single preferred form of our invention, we do not desire to be limited to the "exact details disclosed; but intend to cover all forms and arrangements coming within the definitions of ourinvention constituting the ap- "pended claims,
We claim:
1.
