JOHN MAGEE, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR. TO DIAMOND POWER SPECIALTY COMPANY, OF DETROIT, IJEICHIGAN,
A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
BLOVIER UNIT FOR BOILERS.
Application filed June 12, 1914.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, JOHN MAGEE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blower Units for Boilers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
In the use of fixed blowers for boilers in which the jetting devices are maintained in the water tube spaces of the boilers, such devices are exposed to the heat of the gases of combustion which of course are intense near the lire grates or combustion chamber proper, and are still very great although of less degree near the stack. 7
This invention relates to a unit for a blower system that is adapted to resist the heat of the gases to such an extent that its life is greatly prolonged and it does not require the constant renewal to which devices of this sort are ordinarily liable.
It also includes certain details of construction which greatly simplify it and at the same time insure its proper operation.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The drawing is a view in longitudinal section of a device embodying the invention applied to a water tube boiler for inclined tubes.
In general terms the device is a blower unit adapted to be connected to a steam or air supply and arranged to be mounted in a boiler in such way that jets projected from the nozzles thereof sweep across and between the water tubes of the boiler, the disposition of the water tubes being immaterial. That is, the tubes may be horizontal, oblique or vertical, the only limitation being that the jet nozzles of the unit must be spaced to register with the intervals between the tubes and the unit itself must be arranged to rotate or swing on an axis that is transverse to the general disposition of the tubes.
Referring to the drawings, a bearing collar 1 is arranged to receive the inner end of a cylindrical or tubular casing 2 and support the same in a brick work or setting, such as indicated at 3 of a boiler. The other end of the casing 2 is rotatable in an outer bearing collar 4. An inner jet pipe 5 is supported in the casing 2 in substantially con Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Get. 5, 1915. Serial No. 844,645.
centric relation thereto by means of jet nozzles 6 that are screwthreaded through openings in the casing and corresponding apertures in the pipe 5, and by a collar 7 or bushing at the outer end of the casing 2 that is secured as by a pin 8 or the like in position.
i As a convenient detail of construction a bracket that forms a bearing member is interposed between the pipe 5 and casing 2. A collar 4; also operates as a support, through the medium of a bracket arm 9 for an L-fitting 10 leading toward a steam or air pressure supply. The inner end of the casing is closed by a plate 11 and an adjacent extremity of the pipe 5 is likewise sealed by a plug 12. The space between th concentric tube and casing is packed with asbestos 13 or like refractory material, the packing extending around the end of the pipe 5.
Connection is made between the upper end of the L-fitting 10 and the rotatable pipe 5 by means of a sleeve llsecured in the upper end of the l. and in alinement with the pipe 5, the coupling between the two being made by a packing gland. As
herein shown this coupling consists of a flanged member 15 screwed on to the pipe 5 and in turn engaged by the hub 16 of ahand wheel 17 whereby the pipe 5 may be rotated. The outer end portion of the hub is screwthreaded or fitted to receive a packing gland can 20, a packing ring 18 and suitable gasket being interposed to provide a close joint. as a further detail of construction the bores therefrom not only have high velocity but also a. form that is very effective in cleaning surfaces over which they maybe swept by the manipulation of the hand wheel. The latter may be provided with an endless sprocket chain 21 or like means for operating the unit from the boiler floor or other distant point. p
A blower unit is thus produced which may be inserted in the hottest portion of the fire tube space without danger of being in11nediately destroyed by the high heat to which it is subjected. The steam or air supply connection is such that a tight joint is insured and consequent safety of the operator is sefrom the spirit of my invention and cured. It is to be understood that the collars forming the hearings or supporting members for the blower pipe may have such external dimensions and contours as fit them for any particular brick work or other setting. The jet nozzles may also be arranged to project the jets either at right angles or obliquely to the angles of rotation.
Obviously, changes in. the details of con struction may be made without departing I do not care to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
What I claim is 1. A blower unit for boilers comprising a steam pipe a series of lateral jet nozzles extending therefrom, a casing secured in spaced relation concentrically around the pipe and provided with apertures engaged by the nozzles, inner and outer bearing members for supporting the corresponding end portions of the casing, a bracket secured to the outer bearing member, a steam supply fitting mounted on the bracket in axial alincment with the steam pipe, and a packing joint between the supply fitting and the pipe and adapted to turn the pipe.
2. A blower unit for boilers comprising inner and outer bearing members, a bracket in the outer bearing member, a casing rotatable in the inner bearing member and bracket, a pipe concentrically disposed with in the casing, jet nozzles extending laterally from the pipe and engaging apertures in the casing to hold the casing in proper relation to the pipe, lining of refractory material filling the space between the pipe and casing, a supply fitting mounted in the bracket, and a packing joint secured to the pipe that is rotatably mounted on the fitting and is adapted to rotate the pipe and easing in the bearings.

4. A blower unit for boilers comprising a pipe provided with Venturi jet nozzles and jacketed with a casing having a refractory lining, bearing members for mounting the jacketed pipe in operative relation to the baflle and tube surfaces of a boiler, a supply fitting carried by one of the bearing members, and manually operable means for turning the pipe that forms a connecting joint between the fitting and the pipe.
5. A blower unit for boilers comprising a pipe, Venturi jet nozzles extending laterally from the pipe, a casing concentric with the pipe, a refractory lining cooperating with the nozzles to hold the casing in proper relation to the pipe, bearing members for mounting the jacketed pipe in operative relation to the battle and tube surfaces of a *boiler, a supply fitting carried by one of the bearing members, manually operable means for turning the pipe that forms a connecting joint between the fitting and the pipe, the nozzles supporting the casing on the pipe, and a packing joint between the fitting and the pipe.
6. A blower unit for boilers comprising a pipe, Venturi jet nozzles extending laterally .therefrom, a refractory lining inclosing the pipe, a casing mounted on the lining and held in position by the nozzles, bearing membore for mounting the pipe in operative relation to the baffle and tube surfaces of a boiler, a supply fitting carried by one of v the bearing members, manually operable means for turning the pipe that forms a connecting joint between the fitting and the pipe, the nozzles supporting the casing on the pipe, a packing j oint between the fitting and the pipe, and manually operable means for turning the pipe.
