a an Compa I cl; w k corporation of New York y Application December 21, 1937, Serial No. 180,933
2 Claims. 7 (Cl. 2-37) My invention relates to a new and improved girdle, which may or may not have a brassiere portion.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a new and improved girdle which is integral with a brassiere.
Another object of the invention is to provide a girdle having the required elasticity at the bottom portion, and also at the bust portion, if the garment is of the combination type.
Another object of the invention is to provide a garment which can be simply manufactured at low cost.
Other objects of my invention will be set forth in the following description and drawing-which illustrate a preferred embodiment thereof, it being understood that the above statement of the objects of my invention is intended generally to.
explain the same without limiting it in any manner.
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the improved gar ment.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on Fig. 1.
The garment is provided with a front rear panel 2, and side panels 3.
The side panels 3 are made of elastic woven material or the like, so that said panels 3 are the ine s' 'a of panel I a stretchable both vertically and horizontally. Material of this type which is woven from elastic The bottom portion of the front panel is shaped so as to provide tapered projections or darts 5.
These projections may be triangular or they may have any other shape so as to provide space for the intermediate darts t of a supplemental strip of two-way stretch elastic material. Said supplemental piece of material is sewed to the inner surface of the front panel, above the tops of the darts 5. This supplemental piece of material is sewed to the front panel, at andbelow the tops of darts 5, only along the edges of the darts 5. Said piece of material 6 underlies the front panel I.
The bottom portion of the front of the garment, at and below the tops of darts 5, is therefore stretchable both horizontally and vertically.
The supplemental material is horizontally flat against darts '5 and la.
stretchable and elastic, although darts are non stretchable in the horizontal direction. The
darts 5 and t are both vertically stretchable.
' Since the supplemental material is unconnected to or free from darts 5, save along the edges of said darts 5, sufficient horizontal stretch and elasticity, are provided. These improvements apply to a girdle 0, 7 garment of any type, and they are not limited to a girdle or garment which has a bust portion. i I
The top or brassiere part of the combination garment which is illustrated in the drawing, is
.made of non-stretchable mesh material ill which is sewed to the elastic side panels and which is sewed to the material of the front of the garment along the edges of the projections l l These projections l I are vertically elastic and substantially non-stretchable in the horizontal direction. The mesh material it is not located at the inner'faces of projections l i, save where it slightly overlaps the edges of said projections, in order toxconnect said edges by stitches to said mesh material til.
The rear panel 2 is made of woven material I which is vertically elastic and stretchable and which is substantially non-stretchable in the horizontal direction. Said material I is shaped so as v to form dartsla. Said material 1 maybe elastic and stretchable only in the horizontal direction, and non-elastic and non-stretchable inthe verti-j cal direction.
. The top portion of the rear of the garment is provided with a' strip of two-Way stretchmaterial which is elastic both vertically and horizontally, thus forming darts 8 which are stretchable both vertically and horizontally. This supplemental strip of material is sewed to the material i, only sewed to the side panels 3.
Hence the top of thegarment, at and above the bottom ends of dartsfla is stretchable both horizontally and vertically, even though darts la have only one-Way stretch, either horizontally or vertically. r
The darts 5 reinforce the two-way stretch construction at the bottom of the garment, and said darts 5 limit the horizontal stretch and elasticity at the bottom of he garment, since said darts are stretchable only in the vertical direction.
along the edges of the darts la, and it is also" The supplemental material lies substantially This combination of one-Way stretch darts or members (having any shape) ,and'provided with intermediate darts or members, can be used in preferred to use said combination only at the top and at the bottom of the garment.
The darts 5 and la form, in effect, spaced members of one-way stretch material, having intermediate members of two-way stretch material.
When I specify that the panel .I is vertically elastic, I do not wish to be limited to the use of one-way stretch material, unless the use of such one-way stretch material is specified in a claim or claims. The projections II are longitudinal and lateral.
I claim:
1. A combination girdle and brassiere having a front panel made of materialwhich is elastic in the vertical direction, the brassire portion of said portions thereof located in and interrupting said material-of the brassire portion and connected to said material of the brassiere portion, said projecting portions having lateral extensions.
