IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED COAT AND BLANKET.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,] 07, dated July 1, 1879; application filed April 29, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. Hone.- MAN, of Tuckahoe, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Combined Blanket and Coat, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to furnish a blanket for army use, which shall also be adapted for use as an overcoat with a cape or hood, as may be desired.
The invention consists in a blanket of woven material or rubber cloth of the required size, nearly square in shape, with a semicircular extension at one side, and fitted with sleeves. The blanket is provided with loops for gathering-strings, whereby, when it is used as a coat, it may be gathered around the neck, with the semicircular portion hanging as a cape, or turned and secured over the head as a hood.
The invention will be explained more particularly in connection with the accompanying drawing, which represents the article spread as a blanket.
The combined blanket and coat is shown at A. This consists of one or more pieces of material without seams, cut to the desired outline, so as to lie flat when spread out for use as a blanket. The main portion is nearly square, one end being somewhat narrower than the other, and at this narrow end is a flap or extension, to, which is preferably of semicircular form. r
In the body of blanket A are attached sleeves I) b, and upon the flap a are loops 0 c and d d. The loops 0 are on the line of junction between flap a and the main part of the blanket, and are intended for holding a gath- .erin gstring, by which the blanket is drawn up around the neck of the wearer when it is used as an overcoat, with the flap hanging down as a cape. The loops at are near the outer edge of the flap, so that the cape portion of the coat can be tied with a string around the head as a hood.
At the sides of the blanket holes 0 are formed for buttons or strings to close the front when used as a coat;
The material of the blanket A may be woven cloth, or rubber cloth, such as is used for blankets and water-proof coats. When made of rubber, both sides of flap a will have a rubber surface.
This construction furnishes a useful and convenient article for army or other use, dispensing with the necessity of a separate blanket and overcoat.
The article can be made comparatively cheap, as it does not require the time and expense of shaping and fitting the coat.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combined coat and blanketA, of Woven material or rubber cloth, formed with the extension or flap a, fitted with sleeves b b, and provided with loops for a gathering-string, substantiallyas and for the purposes specified.
CHARLES A. HODGMAN.
