My invention relates to a new and improved article of jewelry.

One of the objects of my invention is to provide a combination. device which includes a frame, a plurality of clips, and a supplemental brooch.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device having parts which can be assembled or detached so that the device can be used for numerous ornamental purposes.

Another object is to provide a device of simple and durable construction, which can be manufactured readily and at low cost.

Other objects of my invention will be set forth in the following description and drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment thereof, it be ing understood that the above statement of the objects of my invention is intended generally to explain the same without limiting it in any manner.

The device comprises a frame 9 having a median lateral bar 9a., an inner closed semi-elliptical shaped bar 9b on the right and a similarly shaped bar 90 on the left. The inner bars 9b and 9c are connected to the frame 9 by means of intermediate integral webs 9k. The frame 9 is thus provided with median apertures 9d and 9e, and end apertures 9f and So. A pin 1 is pivotally connected to a lug 9h of the frame 9 and the usual catch 8 is provided for holding the pin 7 in the operative position which is shown in Fig. l and also in Fig. 9.

A pair of identical clips I and 2 can be connected to the frame 9 or be detached therefrom.

The ornamental bodies of clips I and 2 are respectively provided with looking bars I2 and I3 which are respectively connected to said clips I and 2, by means of hinges I and II. These hinges ID and II may be of the Well known construction and they may include a suitable spring or springs (if desired) whereby each locking bar l 2 and I 3 will be held yieldingly in the operative position shown in Fig. 2, or in. the inoperative position shown in Fig. 6. Hinges of this type are 10 well known per se so that no specific description thereof is required.

The locking bars I2 and I3 can be respectively inserted through the apertures 96 and 9d and said bars can then be turned to the horizontal or locking position shown in Fig. 1. The locking bars I2 and I3 are of frame-like construction, and each of them is provided with five integral prongs, said prongs being designated by the respective reference numerals I 2a and I3a.

As shown in Fig. 9, the webs 9k divide the space between the body of the frame 9 and the inner bars 9b and 90 into a series of spaced edge-opem ings. When the locking bar I2 is closed upon the frame, the two prongs lZa. which are adjacent the base of the bar I2 enter the edge-openings which are directly adjacent the median lateral line of the frame and said prongs can closely abut or even contact with the adjacent webs 9k, which are directly adjacent median bar 9a. The next pair of prongs IZa enter the next pair of edgeopenings of the frame 9. The top or outer prong I 2a is located inwardly of the adjacent part of the inner bar 9b, adjacent the end-web 9k, and said outer prong may be close to or even abut inner bar 9b, and said prong enters a suitable recess which is provided in the body of the respective clip, as shown in Fig. 2. The base of the hinge then abuts the faces 98 of the inner bar 9b. This method of assembly holds the clip firmly in position, with little or no relative movement between the clip and the frame.

The supplemental brooch 5 is shaped to fill the spaces 4 of the open portions of the ornamental bodies of the clips, which bodies are the face members of the complete assembly shown in Fig. l. The body of said supplemental brooch 5 also overlies the adjacent portions of the bars 52 and I3. the median lateral line of the frame 9, and these projections fit in a recess of the body of the supplemental brooch 5, so that the brooch 5 is held against shifting relative to the clips I and 2 by means of said interfitting parts, in addition to the holding action of the resilient pin l4.

When said resilient pin I4 is secured to the catch 15, it may be slightly bent so that the spring action of said pin l4 holds the supplemental brooch firmly in position.

The irregular edge of the body of the brooch 5 is indicated by the reference numeral 6. There may be spaces between the body of the brooch 5 and the edges of the openings in the locking bars I2 and I3, when all the parts are assembled.

Therefore when all the parts are assembled as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and -5, the outer faces of the body of the brooch 5 and of the clips I and 2, form a substantially continuous outer surface. The outer faces of the bodies of the clips, and of the body of the brooch 5, may be decorated with suitable jewels or the like which are not shown in the drawings. The complete assembly can be connected to a garment by means of the pin 1. The brooch 5 can be readily removed from the assembly so that it can be used separately, and the remaining assembled elements can also be used as a brooch. Likewise the 2 clips I and 2 can be separate from the frame 9 and the said clips can be connected to a garment by means of the prongs IZa and I311.

The bodies of the clips are provided with openings or recesses and the prongs of the locking :bars of said clips can enter said openings or recesses, when the clips are used separately.

A highly ornamental and useful article can thus be manufactured at low cost and used for numerous ornamental purposes.

While I have shown a preferred embodiment, it clear that numerous changes and omissions can be made therefrom without departing from the spirit of the invention.

For example the members 9a and 9b and 90 can be omitted as it is sufficient if the prongs I iaand I3a abut or are located close to the inner edge of the body of the frame 9, when the parts are assembled. Likewise any suitable means can be used for connecting the clips to the frame.

I claim:

1. 'An ornamental article comprising a main frame having means adapted to connect the same to a garment, a pair of clips each of which has a body and a locking bar turnably connected to said body at an edge of said body, said main frame and said clips having cooperating means adapted to hold said clips assembled with said main frame and with said edges of the bodies of said clips adjacent each other, the bodies of said clips having openings, a brooch having a body overlying the openings of the bodies of said clips, said brooch having holding means adapted to hold the same detachably assembled with said main frame and with said clips.

2. An ornamental article comprising a main frame, a pin pivotally connected to said main frame, a catch mounted on said main frame and adapted to hold the pin in locking position, said main frame having a body which is provided with a median lateral bar, said frame also having inner bars which are spaced from the body of said main frame, said inner bars having lateral extensions which are adjacent and which are spaced from said median lateral bar,-so that said main frame has adjacent openings located at each side of said median lateral bar and said frame also has additional openings which are spaced outwardly from said adjacent openings and said frame also has edge openings between the body of said frame and said inner bars, a pair of clips each of which has a body and a locking bar turnably connected to said body at an edge of said body, each said locking bar having its inner face provided with prongs, each said locking bar being shaped to be inserted through one of said adjacent openings, each said locking bar having some of its prongs located in said edge openings when it is in closed position and having one of its prongs substantially abutting the inner edge of said inner bar when said locking bar is in closed position, the bodies of said clips and the locking bars thereof having openings which register with said additional openings of the frame when the locking bars are k in closed position, a supplemental brooch having a body which overlies said median lateral bar and the adjacent portions of the bodies of the tal brooch in position when said pin engages its catch.

An ornamental article comprising a main frame having means adapted to connect the same to a garment, a pair of clips each of which has a body and a locking bar turnably connected to said body at an edge of said body, said main frame and said clips having cooperating means adapted to hold said clips assembled with said main frame and with said edges of the bodies of said clips adjacent each other, the bodies of said clips having openings, a brooch having a body overlying the openings of the bodies of said clips, said brooch having holding means adapted to hold the same detachably assembled with said main frame and with said clips, the inner face of the body of said brooch and the outer faces of the bodies of said clips being shaped to i nterfit.

An ornamental article comprising a main frame having means adapted to connect the same to a garment, a pair of clips each of which has a body and a locking bar turnably connected to said body at an edge of said body, said main frame and said clips having cooperating means adapted to hold said clips assembled with said main frame and with said edges of the bodies of said clips adjacent each other, the bodiesof said clips having openings, a brooch'having a body overlying the openings of the bodies of said clips, said brooch having holding means adapted to hold the same detachably assembled with said main frame and with said clips, portions'of the inner edges of the bodies of said-clips and: of the outer edge of the body of the brooch being shaped to interfit substantially.

An ornamental article comprisinga main frame having means adapted to connect the same to a garment, a pair of clips each of which'has a body and a locking bar turnably connected to said body at an edge of said body, said main main frame and with said edges of the bodies of said clips adjacent each other, the bodies of said clips having openings, a brooch having a;-body overlying the openings of the bodies of said clips,

said brooch having holding means adapted to hold the same detachably assembled with said main frame and. with said clips, the inner face of the body of the brooch having a lateral recess at the median portion thereof, the outer faces of the bodies of the clips having projections at said edges of said bodies, said projections fitting substantially in said recess.

6. An ornamental article comprising a main frame having means adapted to connect the same to a garment, a pair of clips each of which has a body and a locking bar turnably connected to said body at an edge of said body, said main frame and said clips having cooperating means adapted to hold said clips assembled with said main frame and with said edges of the bodies of said clips adjacent each other, the bodies of said clips having openings, a brooch having a body overlying the openings of the bodies of said clips, said brooch having holding means adapted to hold the same detachably assembled with said main frame and with said clips, the body of said brooch having a catch at the inner face thereof, said holding means consisting of the pin which is pivotally connected to the body of the brooch and which is adapted to be engaged by said catch, said pin being shaped to be moved rearwardly of the frame by inserting the pin through a pair of aligned openings of the frame and of a body of a clip.
