Be it known that I, BENJAMIN R. JOLLY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Raleigh, in the county of Wake and State of North Carolina, 'have inventedl a new and Improved Bracelet, of which the followinis a full, clear, and exact description.
his invention relates to bracelets and has for an object theA provision of an improved construction whereby the links may bearranged as a bracelet 'or as a necklace.
`Another object in view is to provide an improved constructon of a link which incloses a spring in such a manner that a fiat serpentine cut springv may be used or a substantially flat coiled spring may be used.'
A still further object in view is to provide a link formed with a body and a sliding spring and associated parts whereby a plurality of the links may be connected together by interlocking certain sections thereof in order to produce a bracelet or necklace of any desired length.
A still further object in view is to provide Aan improved catch conforming in appearance to the general outline of the link associated therewith so as to produce a harmonious structure when used in connection with the link.

desired, links 1 can be connected together and provided with catches et, as shown in Fig. 9, so that a wrist watch may be connectedto any suitable number of links. It is also evident that a large number oflinks may be connected together so as to act as a necklace. r1`he various links are identical that the showing of one full link and parts of otherlinks as detailed 1n Figs. 2 to 8 will illustrate the invention except for the catches shown in detail in Figs. 10 to 13.
It will be observed that each body 2 is provided with a face 5 having upstanding walls 6 and 7 which are turned over for `providing runways 8 and 9. The ends of one end of spring 12 while stop 10 limits the movement of thelocking lug 13. The locking lug 13 is provided with a bottom 11 and an end 15 which merges into sides 16 guided by the runways 8 and 9. The bottom 14 hasa bent-up portion 17 formed with a slot 18 whereby a pintle 19 is formed for turned-over end 2O of link 3, as shown more particularly in Fig. 3. .By this construction and arrangement thelocking lug 13 forms a jointed continuation of links 1 and is adapted to be applied and removed whenever desired so as to add or take away one of the links. In order to accomplish this the runway 9is cut away at 21 (Figs. 4 and 7) whereby when the parts are moved to the position shown in Fig. 5 the locking lug canl be tilted to one side and moved out of the lbody 2. The end of thelslide 3 opposite-thatcarrying the locking lug 13V is supplied with a bent-up stop 22 which engages spring 12 and thereby causes the spring to act against the slide 3 and body 2 for normally holding the parts in the position shown in Fig. k3.
As the body 2 and slide 3 are broader than they are deep the spring 12 is flattened to an appreciable extent, as indicated particularly in Fig. 6. The spring may be a at cut spring, as shown in my co-pending application Serial No. 49,723, filed September 9, 1915, or may be a coiled spring widened to an appreciable extent so as to fit in between slide 3 and body 2.

In forming the slide 3 the edges thereof are pressed so as to provide guiding run- Ways 23 and 24 engaging the runways 8 and 9 whereby the parts are stiflened and properly braced while properly slidingly itted together. In formmg the stops 11 it is evident that the openings 25 and 26 are provided for accommodating the guiding runways 23 and 24 as the same move back and forth. It will be observed that there are no rivets, bolts or other loose parts used in holding the slide and body together or, in fact,'in holding any of the parts in proper position. The arrangement of the interlocking slide members and the stops on said members -provide means for properly holding the spring in place without any auxiliary retaining members, and by arranging the notch or opening 21 and the lug 16 proper means arel presented for connecting as many links together as may be desired.
Instead of connecting a'number of links together as shown in Fig. 1 catches may be connected ,to a certain number of links if desired, as shown in Figs. 9 to 13, inclusive. This catch is provided with a body 2 similar to body 2 and a slide 3 similar to slide 3 except `that it is provided with a hook 27 as shown in Fig. 12 and a'lug 28 extending approximately half way across body 2.v Instead of using a spring similar to spring 12 a plate formed with a body 29 is provided, said body having extending therefrom a fairly small section or arm 30, said arm merging into projections 31 and 32. Projection 32 extends through a suitable opening in the side of body 2 so as to be operated manually and moved from the position shown in Fig. 10 to the position shown in Fig. 11. Normally the parts are in the position shown in Figs. 9 and 10 but if it is desired to remove the catch 4 from, for instance, the watch 33,l lug 32 isV pressed which moves the lug 31 away from the stop 28. The slide 3 is then moved outwardly to the position shown in Fig. 11 and thenl lug 32 may be released. Stop 28 when in this position acts as means for preventing the outward movement of lug 32. .When the slide 3 is pressed back to its normal position shown in Fig. 10 lug 31 will automatically move upwardly to the position shown in Fig. 10 under the action of the spring arm 30. It will be observed that the turned-down end 10 of body 2 prevents the accidental removal of the plate 29. This plate together with the parts associated- 1. In a device of the character described,

bent down for forming stops, a slide engaging said runways, said slide being provided with a stop at one end and a pivotally mounted' locking lug at the opposite end, said locking lug being adapted to be forced through said notch into said body so as to anchor the slide in the body, and
a spring arranged between the stop on said slide and one ofthe bent down ends of the body for resiliently holding the parts in a given position.
4. In a bracelet of the character described, a plurality of links provided with a pair of plates, one of said plates being Y formed with turned-up portions for providing runways and also provided with a turned-up stop, and the other of said plates fitting insaid runways and provided with a stop, and a flattened coiled spring arranged between said plates and engaging said stops for resiliently holding said platesl in a predetermined position.
5. In a bracelet ofthe character described, a pluralityof links, each of Said links being provided with a body having up-standing bent-over sides producing runways and bent over ends for producing stops, a sliding plate formed in' two parts pivotally connected together, each of said parts being provided with guiding members fitting said runways, said sliding plates having a turned-up end producing a stop, and a spring arranged between said last mentioned stop and one of the stops on said body for resiliently holding the sliding plate in a predetermined relationship with the body.
(3. In a bracelet of the character described. a plurality of links and a catch for connecting the links to an object, said catch comprising a body, a platel arranged in said body formed with a resilient arm having a projection extending through the body for forming a stop, and a sliding plate provided with a hook member formed with a turned-down portion for interlocking with said stop and said projection.
7. In a bracelet of the character described, a plurality of links and a catch -connecting the links with an article, said catch comprising a body having turned-over guideways and a pair of turned-over end members, one of said end members engaging a link for connecting the catch with the link, a plate arranged in said body engaging the other of said end members, said plate being formed with a resilient arm and a projection extending from said arm near the end thereof, said projection eX- tending through an aperture of said body whereby said arm may be moved manually, and a sliding plate provided with an engaging member at one end and a turned-up stop at the opposite end, said stop extending only part of the Way across the body whereby when said projection is pressed manually the resilient arm is moved out of' the way for permitting a forward movement of the sliding plate, said resilient arm being adapted to move automatically in front of said turned-down stop When the sliding plate is moved back to its normal position, thus locking the sliding plate against further movement. y

In a bracelet of the character described, a plurality of links, avcatch for connecting the links to an article, said catch comprising a body, a sliding plate and a plate having a spring arm, said body being formed with turned-over members for providing runways and turned-over ends for providing stops, ,said body being formed with an aperture in one side thereof, said spring plate being provided with a resilient arm having a projectionextending through said aperture and a second projection acting as a lock, said sliding plate being provided with means for connecting theY same to an article and with a turned-down section at the opposite end, said turned-down section extending for only part of the way across said body whereby said second projection may act against the turned-down section and hold the sliding plate against movement While the resilient arm is in one position and to be moved to one side by manually pressing against the first mentioned projection so as to allow a forward movement of the sliding plate until said turneddown section strikes the rst mentioned projection.
