Description

Feb. 11, 1936. L, DYER '2,30,359
HAND BAGGAGE Filed Jan. 6, 1954 INVENTOR Patented Feb. 11, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
The object I have in view, is the production of hand baggage, such as a hand bag, valise, satchel, or the like, which has a carrying handle, connected to each side of the opening, and which is closed by a slide fastener, in which the two han-.
dles will be connected together by the closing of the bag, and by means of the slide fastener, so that there will be no possibility of carrying the bag, when closed, by only one of the handles.
This and further objects, will more fully appear from a consideration of the following specification, and accompanying drawing, considered together or separately.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side view of a hand bag, illustrating one embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is an end view of the same, in closed condition.
Figure 3 is a like view, open.
Figure 4 is a top View, also open and Figure 5 is a side view, taken from inside of the bag, showing one of the handles, and other details.
In all of the several views, like parts are designated by the same figures of reference.
In the embodiment of my invention, chosen for illustration, the bag I, is of flexible material, such as canvas, leather, or other suitable substance.
It has a closed bottom, but the top, and parts or all of the ends, are slitted, so that the bag may be opened. This slit is closed by means of a slide fastener of well known type 2. Any form of slide fastener may be used, that shown, consisting of metal elements 3, brought into cooperative engagement, by means of the slide 4, being chosen for purpose of illustration only. Each side of the bag has a handle memberfi. Each handle member is secured to the side of the bag, in such a manner, that when the bag is closed, by means of the slide fastener, the two handle members will come into coincidence and be secured together and may be both grasped by the one hand; thus distributing the strain due to lifting the bag.
According to my invention, the slide fastener is connected to the handle members, as well as to the edges of the opening of the bag.
Slide fasteners are obtainable commercially, formed upon a textile fabric, of two parts, each of which may be sewn, or otherwise secured to the edges of the opening of the bag, and also on the outer edges of the handle members. When so made, the bag may be closed, and the two handle members secured together, by a single operation of the slide fastener, which will be moved along the open edges of the bag, and along the upper and outer edges of the two handle members.
It will be noted, that by passing the slide fastener, up and over the handle members, that 10 those portions of the edges of the opening of the bag, adjacent to the handles, will remain unsecured. If nothing is done to remedy this, then the bag may be entered at this point, even when closed by the slide fastener, and the latter locked.
This objection may be overcome, either by having an additional fastening at this point, or by making the handle members sufiiciently stiff, and attaching them rigidly to the bag, so that the two edges of the openings, between the handle members will be stretched tight enough, to prevent ingress to the bag, or escape of its contents.
I prefer, however, to introduce a closing member 6, 6, one on each side of the opening of the bag, and between those portions of the handle members, Where attached to the bag. These closing members may be made of metal, or other suitable material, and sufiiciently stiff, and of suflicient length, so that when the bag is closed, by means of the slide fastener, it will be impossible to open that portion of the bag which is between those portions of the handle members, which are attached to the bag, and otherwise unsecured by the slide fastener.
I have illustrated a bag, slitted open at the top, and a portion of each end, but this form is chosen merely for illustration, and the bag may be any shape or proportions desired.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 40 Patent is:
1. Hand baggage, having a flexible bag, an opening therein, said opening extending across the greater portion of the bag, a pair of handle members, one on each side of the opening, and 45 extending beyond the edges of the opening, but occupying less length than the entire opening, a single slide closure fastener, secured to the edges of the opening, on each side of the bag, beyond the points of attachment of the handle members, 50
each side of the handle and in part around the outer edges of the handle members, said handle members being formed and arranged relative to the edges of the opening to dispose the fastening portions thereof in line with the fastening portions on the edges of the opening, whereby the opening on each side of the handle is closed and the handle members are connected together along the outer edges to form a handle by means of a single closure fastener.
