UNITED STATES PATENT 'o Fica in: mono, or mrw Yoax, n. r.
MICHEL Application fled December 1, 1930. Serial No. 499,857.
' nection with the accompanying drawings, the
' invention may be equally applied to a travelling bag, suitcase, and other similar types of designed for accommodating such articles satchels.
A primary object of this invention '18 to provide a satchel equipped with a compartment together with means whereby access may be had to the compartment without disturbing the contents in the satchel proper.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a satchel of the above mentioned character, which is comparatively simple in construction, can be retailed at a nominal cost, is practical, and well adapted for the purpose designed.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during a study of the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings where- 1n: I
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved satchel, with the cover flap for the auxiliary compartment closed.
Figure 2 is a similar view with the cover flap in an opened position.
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken through the satchel.
Figure 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view therethrough.
With reference more in detail to the drawings it will be seen that I have for the sake of example, shown the invention as embodied in a ladies hand bag, the same formed of suit-' able flexible material and including a bottom wall 1, side walls 2 and end walls 3 and 4 respectively connecting said side walls 2; Thus it will be seen that the handbag is opened at its top, and suitable closure means preferably a well known type of multiple fastener 5 is suitably associated with the side walls 2 for 5 closing the top of the hand bag. On one side wall 2, there may be provided a suitable handle member 6.
Disposed between the side walls 2, and in spaced relation to the bottom 1, is a flexible false bottom 7 that is secured adjacent its opposite edges to the side walls 2 and divides the and bag into an upper main compartment 8, and a lower auxiliary compartment 9. In the up er compartment 8, and on opposite sides 0 the compartment are suitable pockets 5 The compartment and the pockets 10 are usually carried in a hand bag, while the compartment 9 is especially adapted for receiving therein any suitable article such as suggested in Figures 2 and 4 and designated generally by the reference character 11. The article 11 to be placed within the compartment 4 9 depends of course upon the particular type of satchel, that is, when it bein the nature of a ladies hand bag as shown, the article 11 may be in the nature of a babys milk bottle or the like min the event the invention is applied to satchels of a larger size vas for example a suitcase, travelling bag or the like, the article arranged in the compartment 9 may be in the nature of an umbrella or other article as might not be capable of being conveniently placed within the satchel proper and would have to be carried exteriorly of the satchel in a manner thought apparent.
As suggested in Figure 4, the end wall 4 provides a closure for one end of the compartment 9, while the wall 3 at that portion thereof opposite the compartment 9 is free ofengagement with the corresponding portions of the side walls 2, and bottom wall 1 so as to provide a flexible closure flap 12 for the open end of compartment 9. A suitable tongue 13 is secured to or otherwise suitably made integral with the bottom wall 1, and the tongue 13 is adapted to overlap'the flap 12 when the latter is in a closed position, said flap 12 and retaining tongue 13 being provided with suitable complemental fastening elements or means 14 for retaining the flap 12 in a closed position. y
Thus it will be seen that I have devised a handbag or the like, that is equipped with an auxiliary compartment, and in such a manner as not to interfere with the usual flexibility of the handbag and which at the same time provides for a hand bag or like satchel that may readily accommodate therein such article as one would not care to carry in the main portion of the satchel and further, that a satchel provided with such an auxiliary compartment need not necessarily be cumbersome or unwieldy.
Even though I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention. it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of various changes, modifications and improvements coming within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. A satchel including in combination a flexible partition of substantially greater width than the width of the satchel, and extending from end to end of the satchel between opposed side walls of the satchel and secured at its longitudinal edges to said side walls to extend downwardly therebetween when the satchel is in a closed position whereby to divide the satchel into upper and lower compartments, and said satchel having its end wall separated at'its edges from the 0pposed side walls of the satchel adjacent the 7 lower portion of said walls, and also separated from the bottom wall of the satchel whereby access may be had to the lower comparment.
2. A satchel including in combination a flexible partition of substantially greater width than the width of the satchel, and extending between opposed walls of the satchel and secured thereto to extend downwardly.
therebetween when the satchel is in a closed condition, and a strip secured to the partition on one side thereof and adjacent each longitudinal edge of the partition, said strip being secured at its ends and one longitudinal edge to the partition whereby to provide with'the partition a pocket.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature. MAX ARNOLD.
