H. LEMAST ER ADHESIVE TAPE BOX Filed Feb. 4, 1936 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 H. .Ze (/Zadfar and a a Allomeyr Patented Niay 11,- 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Hager Lemaster, Bloomingdale, Ill. Application February 4, 1936, Serial No. 62,348
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a container or box for adhesive tape or the like, and more particularly to a combined container and cutter.
The invention together with its objects and 5 advantages will be best understood from a study- Figure 5 is a fragmentary detail sectional view illustrating the use of the cutter.
Figure 6 is an elevational view of the spool with the tape wound thereon.- Figure 7 is an elevational view of the cutter per se, and
Figure 8 is an elevational view of the cutter taken at right angles to Figure '7.
Referring to the drawings by reference numer- 25 als it will be seen that the container or box comprises a receptacle 5 in the form of an annulus or cylinder open at each end and formed in any suitable manner from metal or other suitable material. The container 5 is adapted to have 39 fitted therein the drum or spool upon which is wound the tape I.
The cylinder 5 and drum 6 are constructed somewhat similar to like containers for adhesive tape now on the market, drum 6 having a hub' to the opposite ends of which are secured in any suitable manner relatively'large flanges or plates 8 which fit snugly withinthe container 5 and between which the tape! is wound on the hub 6.
However in accordance with the present in--.
4') vention the annulus or cylinder 5 has a portion thereof removed to provide in the peripheral wall thereof a relatively large opening 9 and a. slot l extending from one end of the opening 9. At the end thereof opposite to the slot Ill the porif) tion of the wall of the member forming the end wall of the opening 9 is rolled to provide a guide bead ll extending transversely of the member 5.
- Also supported between and secured at its re.-
.30 spective opposite ends to the walls or flanges 8 of the drum is a rodl2 which as best shown in Figures 3 and 5 is adapted to be positioned in proximity to the guide bead II for cooperation therewith during a cutting of the tape 1.
5 Further in accordancewith the present invention there is provided a cutter in the form of an arcuate plate like member l3 formed at one end with a point He and diagonal cutting or knife edges at l4. p Formed integral with opposite side edges of 5 the plate l3 are substantially segmental shaped plate members l5 which fit, as clearly shown in Figure 4 between the flanges 8 of the drum and these plates 15 have arcuate edges 16 to accommodate the hub portion of the drum as well as notch portions I I to accommodate the rod I! when the plate I3 is slid to the position shown in Figure 5 for efiecting a cutting of the tape 1. Plate l3 and associated parts are positioned within he container or box so as to move to and from a position across the opening 9 and to facilitate shifting of the plate l3the latter is provided with, intermediate its ends, a headed stud I8 which operates in the slot in as clearly shown.
From the above it will be apparent, that in actual practice, the curved knife plate I3 is held .in a position shown in Figure 2, that is to one side of the opening 9. This will allow the tape 1 to be threaded freely outwardly through the opening 9. When a suflicient length of the tape has been drawn through the opening 9 the operator engages stud l8 and slides the knife plate I3 to a position across the opening 9, namely from a position shown in Figure 3 to a position shown in Figure 5. As the pointed end I3a of the knife plate passes between the bar l2 and the beaded edge ll of the opening 9 the point of the knife will penetrate a portion of the 'tape 1 and as the knife plate l3 continues to the position shown in Figure 5 the edges l4 will serve to sever the tape.
After the end of the tape has been severed knife plate I3 is retracted to the position shown in Figure 2. i
As clearly shown in Figure 5, as the knife I3 40 severs the tape the end of the tape formed by the severing operation and pressed against the bar l2 will, by reason of the adhesively coated side of the tape being presented toward the bar l2 adhere to this bar l2 so that after each cutting operation an end portion of the tape will be so positioned that by passing the finger into the opening 9 said end of the tape may be gripped between the fourth finger and the thumb and wall thereof, and a slot extending from one end of the opening for a portion of the periphery of the casing, a spool removably fitted within said annular casing, a rolled strip upon the spool and adapted to be threaded outwardly of the casing through said opening, a curved knife plate arranged within said casing. a headed manipulating stud for said knife plate working in said slot, said knife plate having at opposite side edges 10 integral flanges accommodated between .the
flanges of the spool and provided with arcuate edges accommodating the hub of the spool.
2. In a device of-the class described, an annular casing provided with an opening in the 15 wall thereof, and a slot extending from one end of the opening for a portion of the periphery of the casing, a spool removably fitted within said ,ing an end adapted to sever the tape and to force an end portion of the tape formed by the severing operation against said bar whereby said end portion of the tape will be caused to adhere slightly to the bar.
