Abstract

1,244,992. Winding webs. C. A. HARNDEN Ltd. 25 Oct., 1968 [9 Nov., 1967], No. 50869/68. Heading B8R. In winding a continuous web of material, e.g. of plastics film, crepe paper or the like, to form wound packages, a predetermined length of material is wound on a winding element; the element is then removed from the package which is thereby allowed to move away from the element; the web is held fast at a point between the element and the package; the element is re-engaged with the web and a new winding operation commenced; and the web is then severed at a point between the element and the holding point. As shown, a web 1 passes over a guide roller 2, associated with a brake 37, 38, to a winding element 3 which engages the web portion 4 and rotates to form a wound package 50. A revolution counter 48 associated with the roller 2 produces a signal when a predetermined length of material has been wound, and on receipt of this signal a control device 49 is programmed to initiate the following sequence of events: the winding element 3 is extracted from the wound package 50, which is thus allowed to fall on to a pivoted tray 40 (Fig. 2, not shown), and at the same time the brake 37, 38 is operated; a switch 40, actuated by the tray, then causes a holding device 6, 7, 8 to operate so that the web is held fast between fixed member 6 and movable member 8, the package 50 being moved by a push rod 8<SP>1</SP> to an outlet 41, leading to a conveyer or collecting container, where it is held in position by the web portion 51; the element 3 is then brought into engagement with the new web portion 4 and a new winding operation is commenced; when a few layers have been wound on the new package a cutting device 42, 43 is actuated to sever the web; the holding device, the cutting device and the brake are then released and the cycle repeats when the new winding operation is concluded. If the web is provided with lateral perforations, the slight tension arising between the element 3 and the holding device 6, 7, 8 during commencement of the new winding operation may be sufficient to sever the web along such a perforation, and in this instance the cutting device 42, 43 may be dispensed with. The winding element 3 (Figs. 4 to 6, not shown) may comprise two coaxial grippers each having two fingers to receive the web edge, the grippers being movable axially so that they can be engaged with and disengaged from opposite edges of the web, and also being rotatable to perform the winding operation. If it is desired to wind the package on a cardboard tube or the like, the winding element is appropriately adapted, e.g. by the provision of conical pins which are introduced into the ends of the tube for the winding operation.
