Description
June 27, 1933., E s. AN 1,915,998
C OMPACT filed March 24, 1932 Patented June 27, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ELLISON S. IRELAN, OF ELGIN, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO ILLINOIS WATCH CASE COMPANY, OF ELGIN, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS COMPACT Application filed March 24, 1932. Serial No. 600,910.
This invention relates to a compact having a loose powder compartment defined by a platform having an opening therein through which the powder may be dispensed.
The present improvements have to do with a closure for the platform opening so spaced from the platform as to receive a puff therebetween. The puff accordingly serves as a gasket to prevent loose powder from sifting past the closure, and being held in contact with the powder, and is constantly ready for use while being carried in a handbag, or the like.
A suggestive embodiment of my invention is disclosed in the accompanying drawing, 111
which:
Figure 1 is an enlarged View of the compact with the cover in open position;
Fig. 2 is a further enlarged view of the compact in section, the same being taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but taken if on the line l of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of the latch assembled with the platform, as viewed from below; and
Fig. 6 is a view in cross section showing a modified form of closure.
Referring to the drawing, the case comprises a back A to which is secured a bezel B provided with a hinged cover C adapted to close the opening 10 therein. A circular wall 11 is fitted in the bezel opening and secured as by solder to the back and bezel of the case. A platform 12 having a depending flange 13 is extended across the space defined by the wall providing a compartment therebelow for loose powder. The platform is provided with an opening 14 and an offset shoulder 15 adjacent thereto forming a seat.
Hinged at 16 to the platform is a closure 17 adapted to swing to a position directly above the opening in the platform and to hold a puff 18 tightly upon the seat formed by the shoulder 15. The closure may be held 55 in closed position as by a spring catch 19 engaging a lip 20 on the closure. \Vhen so held, the edge of the puff is pinched between the closure and shoulder to seal the compartment. The closure may be provided with on an upturned thumb piece 21 to facilitate its unlatching.
Referring to Figs. 3 and 5, the latch 19 there shown in detail comprises a T-shaped piece having a bar 25 which ext-ends across as the depending flange of the platform, as a chord, the extremities of the bar fitting securely in slots 26. The stem 27 extends upwardly through an opening 28 in the platform so as to contact with the closurelip.
In the modified form illustrated in Fig. 6, the closure 16 is provided with a depend ing bead 30 spaced from its edge in cooperating relation to the edge of the platform opening so as to punch the puff and form a seal for the compartment.
I claim:
A compact having side walls and a bottom together with a platform in spaced relation to the bottom to provide a powder compartso ment, there being in the platform a powder opening formed with a seat whereon the edges of a puff may be rested, a closure hinged to the platform adapted to fit over the puff, a bead on the closure positioned to press upon the puff edges to seal the opening when the closure is swung down upon the platform, and a catch engageable with the free edge of the closure to hold the closure in down position whereby the seal is maintained. so
ELLISON S. IRELAN.
