HINGE STRUCTURE.

This invention relates to certain improvements in small boxes for holding toilet accessories commonly known as vanity boxes, and particularly to an improved hinge for pivotally uniting two or more parts of the box.

These boxes are largely used for containing powder, rouge, and other toilet articles, and the boxes are customarily carried in a pocketbook, handbag, or the like, in which other articles are usually present. In some types of these boxes there is provided a bottom and a cover, these parts being pivotally united by a hinge. It is the special object of the present invention to provide an improved hinge for this type of box of such character that the hinge is inconspicuous, and projects but slightly beyond the outer sides of the box, so that it is not liable to catch on articles carried in the handbag or the like, thus forming a box of improved appearance.

.Vith this object and others not specifically referred to in view the invention consists in certain novel parts, arrangements, and combinations, which will be described in connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features thereof pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed.

Referring now to the drawings, the box illustrated is a small vanity box for holding toilet accessories. As shown this box in cludes a bottom member 1 having a peripheral upturned wall or flange 2, this flange in the particular construction shown being inset at its upper edge as indicated at 3, forming a shoulder i. Pivotally connected to this bottom member 1 is another member 5, this member, in the particular construction illustrated, being a cover provided with a peripheral flange 6 which telescopically engages the flange 3 and seats against the shoulder t when the parts are closed.

These members are pivot-ally associated by a hinge which forms the subject matter of the present invention. In accordance with the objects of the invention this hinge is so formed and socorrelated with the box members as to be inconspicuous, and so that it projects beyond the outer side of the box only so far as is necessary for the proper operation of the hinge. While the specific construction of the parts may be somewhat varied, in the particular construction shown, the hinge comprises a pair of straps 7, 8 secured respectively to the cover and bottom of the box. These straps may be secured to the box in various ways, and one convenient way is shown in which the straps are provided with small projections or tabs 9 which are passed through slits 10 in the flange 2 and 6, before referred to, and then turned in against the inner sides of the flanges, thus holding the straps firmly in place. ,These straps have their edges slit and turned in toward the body of the box, as indicated at 12, to form the knuckle loops 13, 1s, these loops alternating on each strap and interengaging as shown. By thus turning the metal of the straps inwardly instead of outwardly, less metal projects on the outer side of the box than it the loops were formed by bending outwardly as is usual. In the preferred constructions, furthermore, each strap or plate is formed with a plurality of these knuckle loops, and in the best constructions,

as shown, one of the plates will have more loops than the other, a very strong rigid construction being thus provided. The knuckle so formed projects, as shown, in toward the box, and partially into or beyond the walls thereof. To permit this the walls of the cover and bottom are notched, as in dicated at 15, and the knuckle loops project partially into the notch. The interengaging loops 13, 14 are secured together by a pin 16 driven therethrough on which the loops rock to form the pivotal connection.

With the construction shown and described a very simple, neat appearing hinge is provided, and one which is not liable to catch in the pocket or any receptacle in which the box is carried. While the invention has been shown in its preferred form, it will be understood that various changes may be made in the specific structure disclosed Without departing from the invention as defined in the appended claim.

What I claim is: V

In a box for holding toilet accessories and the like, comprising a flanged bottom and a flanged cover provided with aligning cutout portions a pair o1 hinge plates secured respectively to the outside of the bottom and cover, and disposed over the cut-out portions, said plates having their edges notched and inturned to form a plurality of spaced loops in each plate edge which interengage and which are disposed opposite the cut-out portions, said loops projecting beyond the faces of the plates on each side and into the cut-out portions and a pintle passing through the interengaging loops and disposed suhstantially in the Yertical plane of the hinge plates.
