3 Claims.
This invention relates to rotary and semi-rotary furnaces and is a division of my prior application Serial No. 664,604, led 5th April 1933, and has for its object to provide a burner block which also serves as a cover member for charging purposes.
According to the invention the burner block has its front formed as a solid of revolution which is inserted in a corresponding axial opening in the furnace opposite the curved end thereof, the said block being supported on external supporting means which are retractable from the furnace opening.- According to one form the outlet flue is also comprised in the burner block.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings which show a form of rotary furnace according to the above patent application.
In the said drawings:-

Referring more particularly to the drawings, at the burner end of the furnace an axial tapered opening I is formed, and into this opening a burner block is fitted, the said burner block comprising a refractory block 2 held in a metal casing or holder 3. Inthe upper portion of the said` block there is formed an upwardly inclined inwardly diverging passage in which is fitted a conical block 4 having an inwardly diverging passage 5 whose upper Wall forms a continuation of the upper wall of the opening I. Into this passage the burner nozzle 6 is directed, being inclined upwards. In the lower portion of the burner block 2 there is formed an outlet flue 'l leading to a stationary flue 3 which communicates with a recuperator. y
The burner block is mounted on a carriage 9 running on transverse rails Ill, by means of four parallel arms II joined by transverse spindles I2 and pivoted to the casing 3 on the one hand and to the carriage S on the other hand, one of the arms having an extension whereby it can bek moved to lift the burner block into and out of engagement with the end of the furnace. The length of the arms I I is such that when the block is in its operative position as shown, the underside thereof is clear of the carriage 9, While when it is fully retracted it rests on the carriage. The floor of the carriage 9 is open to permit ofthe passage of the flame to the passage 8, while the space between. the block and the passage 8 serves for inspecting the flame. l
A stop I3 is provided for limiting the travel of the carriage 9 so as to ensure its correct position- In Belgium April ing opposite the furnace opening; while a cover place I4 is secured to the carriage 9 so that 'when the burner block is moved sideways from the furnace opening the passage 8 is covered.
The burner 6 and its fuel, and primary and sec- 5 ondary air pipes I5, It, Il are mounted to pivot about ka common vertical axis along which their respective feed pipes I8, I9, 2G terminate, the said pipes and feed pipes being connected by fluid tight swivel joints. The burner 6 is held in position against the casing 3 by means of a latch plate 2| on the said casing behind which engages a latch 22 pivotally mounted on two arms 23, 24 on the burner casing. The latch 22 is pivoted to the arms 23, 24 to form between theburner 6, said 15 arms 23, 24 and said latch 22 an irregular link quadrilateral so that when the arm 2li `is movedy toward the burner block the lateral movement of the pivotal point of the arm 23 is greater kthan that on'the arm 24, with the result that the latch 22 is moved out of engagement with the latch plate 2|. The burner at first is moved away from the block as a result of the reaction of the latch 22 against the casing 3, but this movement ceases when the latch clears the said casing. The 25 arm 23 is controlled by a tension spring 25 so that the latch 22 is normally held down.
Charging is effected at the burner end by moving the block` sideways as above described, but if desired, at the opposite end of the furnace 30 a charging orice may be provided as shown in Fig. l, the said orifice being so situated that it is always above the level of the charge as the furnace rotates. The said orifice is adapted to be completely closed by means of -a movable refractory block 26 mounted in a metal cover 27 having a flange thereon whereby it may be clamped to the furnace casing. The inner surface of the block is shaped to form a continuation of the inner surface of the furnace chamber. 40
I claim:
1. Burner'supporting means for a rotary furnace having an axial opening, comprising a burner block adapted to be inserted in said opening,
a carriage adapted to be moved transversely of 45 said opening, parallel arms pivoted on the one hand to said carriage and on the other hand to said block, the arrangement being such that in its operative position the block is held against the said opening while in its retracted position it 50 rests on the carriage.
2. Burner supporting means for a rotary furnace having an axial opening, comprising a burner block adapted to be inserted in said opening, a carriage adapted to be moved transversely of said opening, parallel arms pivoted on the one hand to said carriage and on the other hand to Said block, the arrangement being such that in its operative position the block is held against the said opening While in its retracted position it rests on the carriage, an outlet flue in the burner block, and a cover plate secured to the carriage, said cover plate when the carriage is moved from the furnace opening, being adapted to cover a passage outside the furnace into which the exhaust gases discharge.
3. In a rotary furnace having an axial. opening, a burner block adapted for insertion in said axial opening, a latch plate on said burner block,
a burner adapted to be moved to and from said block, arms pivotally mounted on said burner, a latch adapted to engage with said latch plate When the burner is in its operative position, said latch being pivotally connected to said arms to form between said burner, said arms and said latch an irregular link quadrilateral so that when one of said arms is moved toward the said burner block the lateral movement of the pivotal point between said latch and one of said arms is greater than that between the latch and the other arm, so that the latch is given a lateral movement to disengage it from the latch plate.
