Application *fiiea March 3,4921.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that IfEnwnno L. Font), residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Baffle Devices for Puddling Furnaces, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact. description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of my specification, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of apparatus embodying my invention; and
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the same with a portion of the structure in section.
My invention has relation to rotary puddling furnaces, such as I have described and claimed in prior patents, and more particularly to a shield or battle for use at the mouth or opening of the furnace in lieu of the hinged or removable door which has usually been employed, The nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which I have shown the preferred embodiment thereof and which will now be described, it being premised, however, that various changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of the several parts, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
In these drawings, the numeral 2 indicates a portion of a rotary puddling furnace shown in dotted lines. 3 designates a suitable overhead support, on which is mounted a carriage at, which is arranged to travel on said support towards and away from the mouth of the furnace 2. This carriage-may be actuated in any suitable manner, as by means of a power cylinder 6, having its piston connected to the carriage. The carriage t has a depending post 7, which carries the baflie for the mouth opening 8 of the furnace. This baffle comprises a metal frame 9, having a lining 10 of refractory material. It is formed with an opening 11 therein, this opening being elongated in the direction of its vertical axis. 12 designates a burner nozzle, which is adapted to be inserted into the opening 11, this nozzle being connected to the pipe 13 through which air is supplied to the nozzle and into which a fuel supply pipe 14 also opens. The nozzle 12 is connected to the pipe 13 by a movable joint 15,
thereby permitting of raising and lowering the nozzle relatively to the center of the furnace, to cause corresponding raising and lowering of the burner flame, this being effected without changing the alignment of the centers of the mouth of the furnace and of the baflle. 16 is a counterweight attachment for the nozzle.
In practice, the battle is adjusted with respect to the mouth opening of the furnace so as to open or close said mouth at will or to vary the area of the escape opening between the battle and the furnace through which the waste gases escape. In this manner, the baffle acts like the damper on the stack of an ordinary furnace having a forced draft.
If desired, the baffle can be readily moved back entirely away from the mouth of the furnace, when, for any purpose this is desirable or necessary.
It will be readily understood that the batllemay be mounted on carriages of various forms, actuated in any suitable manner; that the details of the burner nozzle may be varied, and that other changes may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with a revolving puddling furnace having an outlet opening for the waste gases, of an adjustable baffling damper co-operating with said outlet opening, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a revolving puddling furnace having an outlet opening for the waste gases, of an adjustable battling damper co-operating with said outlet opening, said baflling damper being mounted independently of the furnace, substantially described.
3. The combination with a revolving puddling furnace having an outlet opening for the waste gases, of an adjustable battling damper co-operating with said outlet open ing, said bafiling being mounted independently of the furnace and movable toward and from the outlet opening, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a revolving puddling furnace having an outlet opening for the waste gases, of a movable carriage, a battling damper for the outlet opening, supported by the carriage, and means for moving the carriage, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a revolving puddling furnace having an outlet opening for waste gases, of a baffling damper co-operat- 7. The combination with a revolving puddhng furnace having an outlet opening for the Waste gases, of a bafliing damper mov-= able toward and away from said opening and having a hole therethrough', and an adjustable burner arranged to discharge through said damper opening substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand. 4
