(oi. see-c) This invention relates to certain improvements in holders or cases for carrying cosmetics of that type now commonly known in the art as lipstick holders.

I In this typ of cosmetic holder, it is desirable that the parts of the container shall be as few as possible so as to permit economy in construction and assembly, which shall present a neat and attractive appearance, and which preferably is so made that it may be manipulated with one hand to protrude and retract a cosmetic carried in the holder.

Generally, the invention consists in the pro duction of a casing. a cosmetic carrier or cup having a sliding movement in the casing, a.

manuable operating means extending outwar from the casing through a slot for operating the cup, and means for closing the slot so that an outer casing for this purpose is unnecessary, and the especial object of the invention is the pro duction of a simple and cheap arrangement for prcducing this construction.

With this and other objects not speciflcalLv referred to in view, the invention consists in certain novel parts, arrangements and combinations which will be described in connection with the accompanying drawing, and the novel features pointed out in the claims annexed hereto.

Referring now to the drawing, the improved holder comprises a casing 1 having an open end 2 closed by a cover 3, which in the particular construction illustrated is a hinge cover, being pivotally associated with the casing 1 by a hinge 4, of any suitable or desired type. This cover is also provided with a latch 5 for holding it closed, this latch cooperating with a catch member hereinafter referred to. i

This casing 1 is capacitated to enclose a holder for a cosmetic in paste form, such as a lipstick, and this holder has a sliding movement in the casing to project and. retract the stick. The particular cotion of this holder may, of course, be varied to some extent, but will gen-- erally partake of the configuration oi the casing, both these members, in the construction illustrated, being circular in cross-section. This holder is shown in the form of soup 6 having a bottom 7 provided with a central aperture 8 to permit the filling of the cup by the cosmetic stick indicated at 9.

To permit this holder to have the desired sliding movement in the casing, the casing is provided with a longitudinal slot 10, which extends closely adjacent the bottom of the casing and is formed at its top with a pair of inwardly projecting lugs or ears 11, 12, which reduce the slot 7 to a narrow throat, indicated at 12. In accordance with the invention, a simple construction is htiopted for closing the slot, thus doing away with the necessity of an outer casing commonly used in this type oi container. While the particular It construction of this closure member may be somewhat varied, in that selected to illustrate the invention the closure member is in the form of a strip oi. metal 14 formed with a base or foot 15.

This closure member is rigidly held in place in the casing, and in addition to its function as a closure for the slot in the casing it also, in the particular construction illustrated. acts as a guide on which the paste cup or holder 6 may have a sliding movement. While the particular 86 means for holding this closure in place may be somewhat varied, as shown, a convenient way is the provision of nibs or indentations, indicated at 16, under which the base or toot 15 snaps when the parts are assembled. If desired, these 90 nibs may be omitted and the foot or base 15 made slightly larger than the interior of the casing 1, so that when the closure member is forced into position the base will engage the inner wall of the casing and hold the parts in position by friction.

.As above stated, the cup or holder 6 has a sliding engagement with the strip member 14 of the closure. While this engagement may be effective in various ways, as shown, the wall or the cup is cut at spaced points, indicated at 17, 18, and the metal of the wall of the cup forced outwardly, forminga loop and an aperture 19, which receives the strip 14. Forcing out of the metal produces a finger-piece 20 which extends beyond the wall of the casing, and the outer surface of this may be roughened, as indicated at 21, to aflord a convenient surface for the finger of the user to move the cup.

In the best constructions, a stop is provided for limiting the upward movement of the fingerpiece, and in the construction illustrated this is provided by the shoulders 11, 13, before referred to, formed in the upper end of the slot.

To more securely anchor the closure member in position, the upper end of the strip 14 may be slightly bent over, as indicated at 22, to engage over the upper edge of the open end oi the casing. Where this construction is adopted, this also forms a convenient catch with which the fingerpiece 5 of the cover may engage, as shown in Figure 3.

It will thus be seen that with the construction shown and described a lipstick holder of very simple form has been devised, one which can be cheaply made, readily assembled, and which can be easily manipulated to project and retract the cosmetic stick.

While the invention has been shown and described in its preferred form, it will be understood that various changes in the particular construction and arrangement or the parts may be made without departing from the invention as defined in the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. In a container for a lipstick and the like plastic cosmetic, a casing having a longitudinal slot, a closure member secured inside the casing and fixed relatively thereto and closing the slot, and a paste holder having a longitudinal movement in the casing and provided with a part extending through the slot and having a sliding engagement with the closure member.

2. In a container for a lipstick and the like plastic cosmetic, a casing having a longitudinal slot, a closure member fixedly associated with the casing and of a width slightly greater than that of the slot and acting to close the latter, and a cosmetic holder in the casing having a part extending through the slot and having a sliding engagement with the closure member.

8. In a container for a lipstick and the like plastic cosmetic, a casing having a longitudinal slot, a closure member secured in the casing and comprising a narrow strap closing the slot, a

base secured in thecasing, and a cosmetic holder in the casing provided with a loop sliding on the strap, said loop projecting through the slot and forming a finger-piece for sliding the holder.

4. In a container for a lipstick and the like plastic cosmetic, a casing having a longitudinal slot formed at one end to provide a stop, a closure member secured inside the casing and closing the slot, said closure member having an outturned end forming a catch, a paste holder having a longitudinal movement in the casing and a sliding engagement with the closure memher, and a lid for the casing having a part cooperating with the closure member to hold the lid closed.

5. A container for a lipstick and the like plastic cosmetic, a casing having a longitudinal slot, a closure member secured in the casing and comprising a narrow strip closing the slot, means for fixedly securing the closure member in the casing, and a cosmetic holder in the casing provided with a loop sliding on the strip, said loop projecting through the slot and forming a finger-piece for sliding the holder.

6. A container for a lipstick and the like plastic cosmetic comprising an outer casing having a longitudinal slot, a metal strip provided with an integral foot by which it may be secured in the casing, said strip closing the slot, and a paste holder having its side out out to form a loop through which the strip passes and on which the looped part of the holder slides, said loop projecting through the slot and forming a fingerpiece for sliding the holder.
