ATTORNEY Nov. 5, 1929. c. N. CORYELL HOLDER FOR STICK MATERIAL Filed Jan; 6, 1927 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR. v Z.
ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 5, 1929 CHARLES R. CORYELL, OF MAMARONECK, NEW YORK HOLDER FOR STICK .MATERIAL Application filed January This invention relates to holders for carrying small articles, such as for instance, a lipstick, and more particularly to a novel construction thereof including means for advancing the article beyond the end of the body of the holder whereby it may be positioned conveniently for usel According to the present invention a holder is provided comprising a holder tube which may be of non-circular cross section and in which may be telescopically mounted a carrier tube in which the article may be seated.
A cover member may alsozbe provided having a member projectingtherefrom to engage the carrier tube for con-trolling the position thereof.
In a holder constructed in accordance with this invention the contained article may be advanced beyond the end of the holder tube by merely moving the covermember longitudinally of the holder tube and then swinging the cover member laterally to expose and allow free access to the article itself.
An advantage of the construction according to thi invention is that an article of any desired the holder, the holder being of a corresponing shape.- Should the article carried constitute a lipstick it may convenientlybe constructed with an elliptical cross section and an elliptical holder employed in connection therewith. Various toilet and other articles, however, may be carried b means of this holder, such as shaving brus es, combs, etc., regardless of the shape of the cross-section of the particular article. r
' Furthermore, the construction is such that the article may be easily advanced for use and the article ma A be returned to its COIL- cealed position an the holder closed by the cover member with equal facility. The cover member operates to substantially close the holder so that in closed position should the article be soft or semi-soft, such asvlipstick, it is prevented from leaking out and soiling the ocket or handba in which the holder may ecarried. It is being contaminated by outside substances by means of this construction.
The construction herein disclosed is Simple oss section may. be mounted, within rther prevented from 6, 1927. Serial No. 159,283.
and rugged and therefore cannot be easily broken, and the parts may be assembled and disassembled easily and inexpensively. In addition, the construction is such as to present a net and pleasing appearance.
Although the novel features which are believed to be characteristic of this invention will be pointed out with particularity in the claims appended hereto, the invention itself,
as to its objects and advantages, the mode of its operation and the manner of its organization may be better understood by referring to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming apart thereof, in which.
. Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional View of a holder constructed in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on Fig. v7 is an'elevation partly in section of v a modification using two separate wires;
Fig. 8 is an elevation partly. in section of another modification illustrating the useof a single wire; e
Fig. 9 is still another modification'showing the side arms formed from a single wire and a button to be grasped in opening;
Figs-10, 1,1 and 12 are details showi further constructions of the cap member providing' convenient opening.
In the following description and in the claims parts will .be identified by specific names for convenience, but they are intended to be as generic in their application to similar parts as the art will permit.
ng still I means 'for grasping in Like reference characters denote like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring now te the drawings, and, more "particularly Figs. 1-6, inclusive, the holder may comprise a holder tube 1 which is shown in the drawing as havin an elliptical cross section, although obvious y any other desired cross section mlght be employed correspondin to that of the article to be carried. The hoTder tube 1 may have its lower end closed and rounded and then pe'r end open, the upper edge being bevele or tapered as at 13 to. allow easy seating of the ca It may further be provided with a pair longitudinally extending slots 2 in its side walls fora purposle to be hereinafter described "more in detai Mounted within the holder tube 1 may be a carrier tube 3 of cross-section similar to that of the holder tubeandadapted to fit, snugly therein and to telesco inside of the holder tube. The carrier tu e 3 may have both ends open and have openings 4 in its side walls for a pur ose to be hereinafterdescribed. It may, a so, be provided with a bottom 5 which may be soldered or otherwise secured in position. The bottom 5 and the sides of the carrier tube 3 form a seat to carry the article, which is herein disclosed as a lipstick 6 and which is preferably of the same general cross-section as that of the car-i rier tube and holder tube.
The holder may be closed by means of the cover member 8 comprising a cap 9 having its upper end rounded and closed. The cap 9 may be enerally elliptical in cross section and may e ada ted. to telescope over the ,outside of the ho der tube 1 to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 4. The cap 9 may have its sides pressed or rolled inwardly to formr ,a pair of longitudinal grooves at the opposite ends of the longer transverse axis thereof. The cap 9 may be further provided 'with a pair of holes 16 in the wallnearthe. upper ends of said grooyes, said openings being of the roper size ,to permit wire 19 to be passed t erethrough. Wire 19 having -been passedthrough openings 16 is bent to' form side arms IOeXtending parallel to the sides of cap 9, said arms being firmly seated in'grooves 15,- thereby preventing relative movement of the cap and arms.
The arms 10 are extended parallel to the sides of holder tube 1, the ends thereof being bent transverselyat right angles, forming pivot portions 20. extending through slots 2 in said tube and throu h openings 4 in carriertube 3, the ends being further bent upwardly as at 21.
In order to advance the article for use the .cover member 8may be moved longitudinally .relatively to the holder member 1 until the article is advanced any desired distance beyond the holder member. The cover member 8 may then be swung laterally about the pivot portions 20 first to the position as shown in Fig. 5, and then to the position shown in Fig.
6, whence the lipstick 6 is ready for use. The
holder may, if desired, be grasped by the cap 9 and side arms 10 at the same time it is grasped by the holder tube 1, thereby positively preventing retraction of the article into the holder tube during use.
When it is desired to close the holder, the
operation of the parts is reversed, the cap 9 being swung to the osition shown in Fig.
, parts being then te escoped together with the cap 9 fitting down over the holder tube 30 1 as shown inFig; 1.
the grooves themselves forming additional" friction means for locking the cap in closed 4 position.
If desired,-two separate pieces of wire may be used instead of the single piece. Referring. .95
nowto Fig. 7, the side arms 30 are made from two separate pieces of wire. Each side arm 30 has its ends disposed in a groove 25 on the cap 29 and bent inwardly through a hole 26 in the wall of the cap and then. .100
downwardly to clamp-the'side member 30- firmly to the cap 29', this construction'pre venting relative movement between the cap and side arms. The rest of the holder shown in Fig. 7 may be constructed in thesame manner as the holder shown in Figs. 1-6, inclusive.
Referring to' Figure 8, the cover mem-' ber 35 is formed of a cap 36 having a closed end and having its sidewalls pressed or bent,
inwardly to 'form longitudinally extended grooves 37. The side arms 38 are made up of a single piece 'of wire 39, generally U-shaped,
the wire being bent at right angles to'forin a pivot portion 40 extending through the slots 41 in the holder tubev 42 and through holes in'the carrier tube'43. The upper ends of the side arms 38 are disposed in the grooves 37 and bent inwardly throu 'h holes 44 in the .,walls of the cap,'then dow wardly, thewire, being clamped around the wall of the cap to -12!) prevent any relative movement between the ap and the side arms. The upper end of the older tube 42 ma be beveled as at 45 to facilitate closing 0 the cap 36 down over the holder tube. In Fig. 9, the holder tube may be provided with'longitudinally extending slots 51 in the sidewalls, its upper edges having notches 52 in line with the slots.
The -carrier tube'53 may be telescopically 13 0 mounted within the holder tube 50 and provided with openings and a bottom plate 54. A lipstick or other material ma be set in the carrier tube 53, as is well un erstood.
The cover member 55 is made up of a cap 56 having a disk portion 57 with a projecting flange portion 58, the flange portion being provided with a button 59 which may be of some ornamental design, and which can be easily grasped by the user for opening and closing the holder. Depending from thedisk portion 57 may be a central projection 60 having an opening) therethrough through which a wire 61 may e passed. This wire is firmly secured in said opening by soldering or otherwise, and is bent downwardly to form side arms 62 snugly fitting the walls of the holder tube 50, ,the lower ends of theside arms being bent inwardly to form pivot portions 63 passing through the slots 51'in the holder tube and the holes in the carriertube, the spring of the wire material holding the side arms in position.
V It will be undestood that when the parts are in closed position as shown in Fig. 9, the transverse upper portion 64 of the wirewill be dis osed in the notches 52 and the disk portion 5? will be snuglyfitted'inside the upper edge of the holder tube with the flange 58 projecting out.
It will be appreciated that this modification is operated in a manner similar to modifications described above. An outstanding feature of this modification, however, is the provision of a button so positioned and arranged that it may be readily grasped by the fingers in such manner that, when the cover member is moved longitudinally away from the holder tube and then swung later ally, the fingers are not liable to touch and break the stick material. A further feature of the modification described above is the provision of the spring side arms 62' which may .-be easily but not accidentally sprung out of the holes in the vcarrier tube 53.. This allows easy removal and replacing of the carrier member 53, together with its contained stick material, it being within the contemplation of this invent-ion to provide combination refills of carrier member and stick material. These refills can be replaced.
as a unit in the holder-when the'old stick material is used up.
In 10, the covermember 90 may be made up'of a plate 91 having a cylindrical portion' 92v with side arms 93 depending therefrom. The plate 91 may be provided with an opening in which maybe sprung a spherical member 94 having a split skirt 95. Either the skirt 95 or the cylindrical portion 92 or both together, as shown inFig. 10, may be utilized to hold the cover member 90 in closed position on the holder tube 96'.
Referring now to Fig. 11, the cover meniber 99 comprises a cylindrical cap 100 having a closed end and depending side arms 101,
,the cap telescoping over the outside of the holdertube 102. The cap maybe provided with openings in which may be sprung a bail 103, this bail providing convenient means for grasping the cover 99 in opening and closing and for-attaching to a chain or the like, if desired.
In Fig. 12, the cover member 105 comprises a flat cap 106 having a pair of integral side arm's 107 depending therefrom. The flat cap 106 has a knob 108 secured thereto by soldering or otherwise and a cylindrical wall 109 Itshould be noted that the species shown in Fig. 9, and Figs. 10, 1 1 and .12, are provided with finger-engaging means which are so arranged and so POSliZlOIlGdthat they may be grasped by the fingers in opening and closing the holder in suchv manner that the position of the fingers automatically is such that they cannot accidentally touch the lipstick or other stick material as the cover member is swung laterally. It will be obvious that this is a very meritorious feature since, if no special means is provided,'there is chance that in opening and closing the holder, the finger will touch the lipstick resulting not only. in soiling the fingers but possibly. 1n breaking the lipstick.
Due to the construction of the holder, the shape of the article is not limited to any particular'cross-section, although it has been disclosed for purposes of illustration as ell1pt1- cal. The article may be fed to a useable position by means which is independent of shape of cross-section by a simple longitudinal relative movement of the parts, thereby providing a simple and efiicient mechanism whichmay be rugged and inexpensive and which is not likely to get out of order.
While the holder has been described a I lipstick holder, it is obvious that the holder maybe used to carry and dispense any other substance in the form of a stick.
While certain novel features of the inven-- tionhave been shown and described and are pointed out in the annexed claims, it willbe understood that various omissions, substitutions and changes in .the forms and details of the device illustratedand in its-operation may be made by those skilled in the art without imparting from the spirit of the .invention.
