Description

March 12, w (5 K N A I LIP STICK HOLDER Filed Oct. 21, 1952 I INVENTOR. WILLIFM EKENJ: aw.
W r flu ATTORNEY)" Patented Mar. 12, 1935 I PATENT OFFICE LIP STICK HOLDER William G. Kendall, Newark, N. J., assignor to Parfumerie Rigalld, Inc., New York, N. Y.,' a corporation of New York Application October 21; 1932, Serial No. 638,895
5Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in lipstick holders and more especially to an improvement on the type of lipstick holder shown in my previous Patent No. 1,480,449 of January 8, 1924. The invention is not limited to a lipstick holder, since it may be used for' holding other objects.
A particular object of this invention is to provide a lipstick holder which can be made from a minimum number of parts, which is efiicient in operation, in which the parts once assembled will retain their relative operative position and in which the parts cannot be readily separated from each other either accidentally or otherwise.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved lipstick holder which may be made more economically and with fewer operations in the manufacture of parts as well as in assembling than prior lipsticks known in the art.
Further objects will .be apparent from the specification and drawing in which Fig. l is a perspectivedisplay of the parts constituting the assembly which isthe subject of my invention,
a being the outermost cap, b the outer housing or shell, 0 the inner housing with spiral slot therein, 11 the pin acting as stop and guide, e the lipstick holder, 1 the innermost housing with perpendicular slot therein.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on an enlarged scale along the line 2-2 of Fig. 3, showing the assembly with lipstick in place.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation with the separate parts shown in Fig. 1 assembled.
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of a modified form of lipstick with a shortened cap but structurally similar to the assembly shown in Fig. 2.
The spiral slot in the housing c is designated as 10. One or more small projections or nibs in the housing 0 integral therewith are designated as 11. The flange or heading on the housing b is designated as 12 and in this flange the projections 11 fit so that the housing c cannot be readily removed from the housing I) when the housings -b and c are once joined together. Said projections 11 fit tightly within head 12 of housing b, when the parts are assembled, so
veloped fiat plate would show as a straight slot,
would consequently run from a point near the left hand lower corner to a similar point near the right hand upper corner, but not reaching the edge. This slot as well as the projections 11 can be produced by one operation of the press. The housing 12 also has the, projections 14 which 6 frictionallyengage the inside of the cap a, affording a tight fit with said cap when the cap is forced over the housing b.
The holder e has the side opening 15 therein and the bottom opening 16. The latter serves no functional purpose in the use of the device, but is provided for facilitating the finishing operation of the holder in the lathe, etc. The guide pin d fits into the opening (see Fig. 2) and is held in the loops 1'7 which are formed 16 integrally. with the bottom .of the holder e. The guide pin d has one end thereof bent vertically upward and rebent horizontally,-as shown at 18 in Figs. 1 and 2. The innermost housing I has a vertical slot 2 19 and an enlarged base 20. The-base 20 is knurled to permit a greater ease in rotating same and when this is revolved, this causes the end of the pin 18 whose horizontal extension is long enough to reach through both slots, to travel in the spiral slot 10, which results in the vertical movement of the holder e and the lipstick 23 contained therein. The resilient split housing c has a tight frictional fit within housing b, and the resulting frictional grip is increased by the engagement of lugs 11 in bead 12. The tube i, which has the vertical slot 19, can turn freely within housing c. The removal of housing 1 from housing 0 is prevented by the engagement of the outer end of pin 18, with the lower end of helical slot 10.
The housing. I) has at the upper edge thereof an inward fiare 21 which limits the upward movement of the housing 0 therein. The lipstick holder e is also beaded at 22 in order to provide limited frictional engagement with the inside of the housing I, suflicient to guide it properly while otherwise preventing direct contact within the housing 1 as shown in Fig. 2.
It is clear that the holder e has an end wall at its bottom, and that the guide pin d is connected to said end-wall at the bottom face of said end-wall, so that the lipstick can be inserted into the holder without being obstructed by theguide-pin. Likewise, the assembly is facilitated by reason of the fact that the guidepin can be easily and quickly connected and/or adjusted to the bottom face of the bottom endwall of the holder.
This form of construction is particularly advantageous in that the guide pin does not contact with the lipstick itself as in the form of construction previously used. The shank of pin 18 can be slid in loops 1'! until its outer angular end-portion enters the recess 15 oi the holder s. This permits the introduction 01 holder c, assembled with pin 18, within housing f. The pin can be pulled outwardly, by a suitable tool, until its end enters slots 19 and 10. The housing b can now be pushed over housing c. The pin 18 has its shank fittingirictionally in loops 1'].
It is apparent that various changes and modifications may be made in this lipstick holder without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What! claim is:
1. A holder oi the class described, comprising a first housing having a longitudinal slot, a second housing surrounding a part of the first housing, the second housing having a helical slot, a holder located in the first housing and longitudinally slidable therein, a pin connected to said holder by connecting means which permit the lateral slidable adjustment 01' said pin relative to said holder.
2. A holder of the class described, comprising a first housing having a longitudinal slot, a second housing surrounding a part 01' the first housing, the second housing having a helical slot, a holder located in the first housing and longitudinally slidable therein, a pin connected to said holder and relatively adjustable thereto, said pin projecting into the slots of the assembled housings, said pin having an outer angular end portion and said holder having a recess in which a part of said angular end portion is located.
3. A holderoi' the class described, comprising a first housing having a longitudinal slot, a second housing surrounding a part of the first housing, the second housing having a helical slot, a holder located in the first housing and longitudinally slidable therein, a pin connected to said holder and relatively adjustable thereto, said pin projecting into the slots of ends are spaced from the ends of said inter-- mediate casing, said intermediate casing having a frictional and non-turnable fit within said outer casing, a third casing located within said intermediate casing and having a longitudinal .slot, said third casing having a finger-hold projecting beyond the other casings, and a holder located within and longitudinally slidable within the third casing, said holder having an end wall and also having a pin whose end is located within said slots, said pin being connected to said holder at the bottom face of the end wall of the holder.
5. A holder 0! the class described, comprising an outer casing, an intermediate resilient casing located with the outer casing and having a vertical slot and also having a helical slot whose ends are spaced from the ends of said intermediate casing, said intermediate casing having a irictional and non-turnable fit within said outer casing, a third casing located within said intermediate casing and having a longitudinal slot, said third casing having a finger-hold projecting beyond the other casings, and a holder located within and longitudinally slidable within the third casing, said holder having a pin whose end is located within said slots, said pin being laterally adjustable relative to said holder, and said holder having a recess for receiving the end oi said pin.
