Claims.
This invention relates to a retaining device which is mainly designed for retaining a brake jaw and the head of the pin together, the general object of the invention being to provide a pair of 5 members which can be readily slipped into place to enclose a part of the jaw and the head of the pin, with means for locking the two parts together.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the invention in use.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through Figure 1, showing the pin in elevation.
Figure 3 is a view of a blank from which one of the members is formed.
Figure 4 is a view of the member after the blank has been shaped to form said member.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the device before the parts are bent into locking engagement.
Figure 6 is a view of a blank from which a modified form of the invention is formed.
Figure 7 is a view of the modified form of member formed from the blank. 5 Figure 8 is a perspective view of the modified form of the device.
Figure 9 is a view of the locking member. As shown in these drawings, I provide a pair of members A and B, each of which is formed 0 from a blank 0, shown in Figure 3, which has a straight outer side and a straight end, with a tongue 1 projecting from the opposite side, with its outer edge forming continuations of said end and said opposite side sloping inwardly to the 5 other end, as shown at 2, so that this other end 3 is of considerably less width than the opposite end. The side 2 is formed with a substantially semi-circular recess 4 which is located closer to the end 3 than the other end. Each blank is bent, as shown in Figure 4, to provide a long bottom part 5, a vertical side 6 and a top '7, the top being much shorter than the bottom part 5 which contains the recess 4. The two members A and B are passed under the jaw D from opposite sides of the pin E and then moved along the jaw toward the pin until the recesses 4 engage the pin, it being seen that the two recesses 4 form a circular opening through which the pin passes. The members A and B are so positioned that the flanges 8 formed by bending up the ends carrying the tongue 1 will contact each other, as shown in Figure 5, with one tongue projecting in one direction and the other in the opposite direction and then these tongues are bent in opposite directions over the adjacent flange 8, as shown in Figure 1, and thus the parts are locked together with the device surrounding the jaw B and the head of the pin.
Instead of providing the tongues 1, I may omit these tongues and form a slot 9 in the wide end of the blank C, as shown in Figure 6, so that when the large end of the blank is bent to form the flange 8', the slot 9 will be located at the middle of the flange and the flange is also bent at right angles, as shown at 10. Thus when the parts are placed together, as shown in Figure 8, the flanges 8 and the flanges 10 form T-shaped parts which are separated from each other and then a locking strip 11, shown in Figure 9, is engaged with the flanges 8 and 10, as shown in Figure 8, with the ends of the strip bent inwardly, as also shown in Figure 8 at 12, and thus the parts are locked together. If desired, the flanges may be fastened together by bolts and nuts, but it is not thought necessary to show such means for connecting the flanges together.
As will be seen, the sloping edges 2 of the two members abut and the small end portions of the two members come under the jaw, and with the opening formed by the recesses 4 surrounding the pin under the jaw. This device can be applied after the brakes have been adjusted and the pins put in place and this invention makes unnecessary the use of the usual cotter pin.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:-
1. In combination with a member having a pin, of a retaining device of the class described comprising a pair of similar members, each having a bottom part having a sloping inner edge with a recess in said edge intermediate the ends of the bottom part, the two bottom parts abutting 'each other at their sloping edges with the recesses forming an opening to receive the pin, a vertical part connected to one end of each bottom part, a top part connected to each vertical part and extending over the top of the pin, the vertical and top parts of one member being reversely arranged with respect to the similar parts of the other member, abutting flanges extending upwardly from the inner ends of the top parts, and means for connecting said flanges together.
2. In combination with a member having a pin, of a retaining device of the class described comprising a pair of similar members, each having a bottom part having a sloping inner edge with a recess in said edge intermediate the ends of the bottom part, the two bottom parts abutting each other at their sloping edges with the recesses forming an opening to receive the pin, a vertical part connected to one end of each bottom part, a top part connected to each vertical part and extending over the top of the pin, the vertical and top parts of one member being reverseiy arranged with respect to the similar parts of the other member, abutting flanges extending upwardly from the inner ends of the top parts, means for connecting said flanges together, such means comprising extensions on the flanges which are bent into engagement with parts of said flanges.

In combination with a member having a pin, of a retaining device of the class described ccmpris-ing a pair of similar members, each having a bottom part having a sloping inner edge with a recess in said edge intermediate the ends of the bottom part, the two bottom parts abutting each other at their sloping edges with the recesses forming an opening to receive the pin, a vertical part connected to one end of each bottom part, a top part connected to each vertical part and extending over the top of the pin, the vertical and top parts of one member being reversely arranged With respect tothe similar parts of the other member, abutting flanges extending up-' pm, of a retaining device of the class described comprising a pair of substantially U-shaped members, each including a bottom part, a vertical part and a top part, the top parts extending over the top of the pin, the bottom part having a sloping edge and a recess in said edge, the two sloping edges abutting each other, the recesses registering to form an opening through which extends said pin, and one U-shaped member extending in an opposite direction from the other U-shaped member, the adjacent edges of the top parts of the two members being bent upwardly to provide flanges, and means for locking the two flanges together. 5. In combination with a member having a pin passing therethrough, a retaining device comprising two substantially U-shaped members extending in opposite directions with their lower limbs passing under the member and having recesses therein forming a hole for receiving the pin, the upper limbs of the two members passing over the head of the pin and bent to provide flanges which abut each other, and means for fastening the flanges together.
