This invention relates to new and useful improvements in means for engaging, locking and fastening together the sections comprising the chain or string-portions of ornamental jewelry, especially such as are commonly worn by ladies, and the said device has in this connection particularly application to a ladies necklace.

It is a well known fact, that the locks of said necklaces, or the means of fastening the chain-parts together in locked position, are at present of a construction, which only too frequently causes the loss of such necklaces, as the snap fasteners or locking means .15 will part Without any warning to the wearer, the necklace simply falling to the ground unobserved.

This condition is especially deplorable where necklaces of greatvalue are involved. However, the loss and discomfort caused by inefi'icient locking means in the above respect has only lately been aggravated by the fact that at present especially heavy strings of beads or pearls are now worn by ladies as a vogue.

It is for the purpose of remedying the above faulty conditions, that I have constructed my device, which o'fiers a safe guar- 'anty against any untimely opening of the locking or fastening members of a necklace. As the construction of my device is rather simple the costof manufacturing should be proportionately low.

With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described,

" "Referring more particularly to the drawin.gs, 1O indicates part of a necklace to which are connected the respective locking members 11 and 12, in a manner as shown,- especially in Figures'2 and f 1 f The member 11 comprises an annular ring portion 13; to the latter ispivotallyconnect ed a lever 14 by means of a screw 15. The said lever has one end terminatedin a substantially circular disc 16 of a size almost equal to the central opening of said annular ring portion 13.

The other end portion of the said lever 14, terminates in an eyelet 17 adapted for engagement with the chain 10 of the necklace.

In looking a necklace by means of the said fastening members 11. and 12, it is only necessary to insert the bar 18 through the central opening of the annular ring-portion 13. The weight of the chain or necklace proper will then exert a pull on the eyelet 17 of the level 14 with the result that the opposite end of the said lever, or disc portion' 16 descends tightly upon, or presses against, the bar 18 of the member 12, thereby absolutely preventing any disengagement of the said members 11 and 12. i

It wil be obvious that the stronger the pull,

.whieh may be exerted, is upon the lever 14,

the more tightly will bethe grip, which is exercised by the disc portion 16 upon the bar18.

It is obvious that changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts, as shown, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I do not therefore wish to limit myself to the construction and arrangement shown and described herein.

-VVl1at I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentof the United States, is:

1.- A fastening device adapted for attachmentto the opposedends of an encircling element, and the said device'having a marginal ring element, a clamping disc pivotally mounted on the said ring element and having a protruding eyelet member, which member acts as a lever to actuate the said disc, an insertable bar adapted to rest between the said disc and the ring element, and an eyelet member on thesaid bar adapted to pass under the said ring element.

2. In afastening device of the character described, a ring element having pivot bearing members on the margin thereof, a disc member concentric to the said ring element and having its diameter smaller than the inner margin of the said ring element, an eyelet member on the said disc and the said eyelet member attached Within the aforesaid pivot bearing members, a bar element having an eyelet member thereon, and the said bar element insertable between the said disk member and the marginal portions of the said ring element.
