IMPROVEMENT IN FOUNTAIN-BRUSHES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,0! 5, dated September 11, 1877; application filed September 3, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY M. JENKINS, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore, and in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain- Brushes; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompa nying drawings, and to the letters of reierence marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the peculiar construction of the month and brushholding stopper or mouth-piece of a fountainbrush, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

In the accompanying drawingsmaking part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a view of the can or bottle, showing its mouth and stopper in section. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the stopper and brush.

In the figures, A represents a can or bottle of any suitable construction, which is provided with a mouth,whioh is slightly flaring. B represents the stopper or mouth-piece, which is made of rubber or other suitable flexible material, and in conical form. Through this stopper is passed a tube, (J, having aflaring mouth, on the inner end of which is an enlargement, as seen at w .00, forming a shoulder, against which the inner end of the stopper fits snugly, the parts 0 and D being screwed or otherwise fastened together. D represents a cup, which is secured to the tube near its outer end, and which contains and holds the ends of the bristles forming the brush. The bottom of this cup forms an abutment, against which the outer end of the stopper fits. F are the bristles.

The stopper B is inserted in the flaring or tapering mouth of the can, and when pressed in tightly the rubber of said stopper of course packs firmly around the tube, and, beingcompressed, it spreads endwise, and thus forms a tight joint against the bottom of cup D and the enlargement at m-w.

This fountain brush is used for holding either blacking or ink or oil, and may be employed by harness-makers or others, according to the use for which they design it.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
