To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, MARK T. Returns, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Portland, in'the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tooth-Powder Bottles, of which the following is a specification.

Myinvention relates to improvements in tooth-powder bottles, and more particularly to that class ofbottles designed to give entrance to the brush for the purpose of receiving the powder.

It consists in the peculiar construction of the mouth of the bottle and in the stopper adapted to be used in connection therewith.

In the drawings herewith accompanying and making a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bottle with the stopper removed. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view of my improved bottle, showing the brush inposition. Fig. 3 is a central transverse sectional view through the bottle and stopper, the longitudinal extent of the stopper being equal to that of the opening in the bottle. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the top of the bottle, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the bottom of the stopper.

Same letters of reference refer to like parts.

In said drawings, A represents the body of the bottle, and B the opening in the top, which in horizontal section is substantially the width and length of a tooth-brush, so that when the brush is inserted it will fairly fill the mouth of the bottle. The interior sides and end walls C of the mouth of the bottle are integral therewith and convex in vertical section, as seen in Figs. 2, 3, and 4:. The object ofthis convexity is to cause the ends D of the bristles to be compressed as they enter, forcing any surplus water upwardly toward the back E of the brush. The depth of the mouth of the bottle permits the ends of the bristles to pass below the lower edge thereof. Whenin position, they assume substantiallythe form illustrated in Fig. 2, the lower extremity of the bristles expanding slightly.

Thecover for the bottle consists of a combination of cork or other yielding material, as F, and a suitable cap G, which is usually of the same material as the bottle. Combined with the stopper is a locking-bar H, having its upper or engaging surfaces I inclined, so that when turned diagonally across the bottle it tends to draw the stopper tightly into the mouth of the bottle by reason of the inclined surfaces engaging the shoulders J in the bottle. The locking-bar is operable by means of a spindle K, passing through the stopper, and a knob L at the top.

The advantages of my improved bottle are that when the brush is inserted in the bottle the water held in the bristles is forced upwardly toward the back of the brush and the bristles pass below the neck of the bottle, the lower extremities being exposed to the powder and the portions below the shoulder of the bottle tending to expand slightly to expose a larger surface to the powder. The

peculiar construction of the stopper affords a tight fit, being locked on the inside, so that when the stopper is in place the locking device is entirely concealed, the knob appearing as an ornamental top to the bottle.

Having thus described my invention and its use, 'I claim- 1 The combination with a bottle havinga long comparatively narrow opening, the interior walls of'which are convex in vertical section, of a stopper having a long comparatively narrow body of compressible material, a cap of non-compressible material and a locking device comprising a spindle passing through the stopper carrying on its lower end a transverse bar having inclined upper faces to engage the lower edge of the opening with a wedging action, and on the top with a knob for rotating said spindle.
