J. G. HAGLOCK.
AUTOMATIC MUCILAGE BOTTLE.
(Application filed Mar. 3, 1900.)
(N9 Modal.)
lWwZZF' UNITED STATES ATENT Erica.
JOHN G. HAGLOOK, OF STERLING, ILLINOIS.
AUTOMATIC MUCILAGE==BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 651,420, dated June 12, 1900.
Application filed March 3, 1900. Serial No. 7,163. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN G. HAGLOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sterling, in the county of WVhiteside and State of Illinqis, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Mucilage- Bottles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to automatic mucilage-bottles, and belongs to that class wherein the bottle is provided with a combined cover and mucilage spreader. I am aware that there are prior inventions along this line; but in practice they do not accomplish the advantages claimed for them. One great object in devices of this class is to avoid the gumming or hardening of the liquid at the point of discharge, resulting in a stoppage of the flow. In some of these devices the elasticity of a rubber spreader has been depended upon to keep the discharge-port closed; but this is not sufficient, as the rubber weakens in time, permitting leakage of the liquid. The seating of the cover upon the opening must be positive and certain and the junction be such as to prevent, so far as possible, any collection of the liquid on the outside thereof. These ends are attained in my device. It is also simple in construction and possesses other features which make it an improvement over any similar device heretofore invented. One great advantage lies in the facility with which it can be used for distributing the mucilage, the bottle being held in a natural horizontal position in the hand and being susceptible of movement backward or forward or in any direction over the substance to be gummed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device, showin g the same as used when the liquid is being applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective thereof, showing the same when used for spreading the liquid.
1 is the mucilage bottle or receptacle, in
' shape of a handle, contracted into a narrow neck 2.
3 is a rubber cap tightly seated upon the neck 2 and projected into the flexible spreader 4, which is integral with the cap 3. On the under side of the spreader 4 is an aperture 5 to permit the passage of the liquid from the bottle. Upon the front face of the spreader 4 and integral therewith is a transverse rib 6, through which passes the small metallic spring 7 operating upon the spreader 4 and keeping the aperture 5 normally closed.
To release the liquid from the bottle, a slight pressure is exerted on the end of the spreader 4, opening the aperture 5 and permitting a limited amount of the contents of the bottle to escape. removed and the mucilage distributed by the spreader, which is moved backward and for ward in circles or in any desired direction. The narrowness of the neck 2 prevents too great a discharge of the liquid.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A mucilage-receptacle consisting of a handle like receptacle having contracted neck, a rubber cap fitted tightly over said neck provided with an outlet-opening and having a flexible spreader projected laterally beyond the same, and an auxiliary spring sup ported on the laterally-projected portion of the cap and acting upon the same beyond the said opening as and for the purpose specified.
2. The herein-described mucilage-receptaole consisting of the bottle with contracted neck, a rubber cap sleeved uponsaid neck provided with an opening and having an integral flexible spreader with integral transverse rib upon its outer face, and a metallic spring passed through said rib with its ends bearing upon the cap and spreader above and below the rib, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
