Description

A. T. SPARE FoLDING Box Filed Feb. 26, 1930 Oct. 13, 1931.
Ji j@ Patented Oct. 13, 1931 ALEXANDER T. SPARE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS FOLDING BOX Application filed February 26, 1930. Serial No.,4l31,3571.
This invention relates to folding boxes usually manufactured of breboard, cardboard, or of any other such suitable container material.
i One of the objects of the present invention is to provide an improved form of a folding box having a structure which is rigid and substantial and suitable for shipping purposes.
"1o Another object is to provide a box, the
A2o give way when articlesl are packed and shipped therein.
In the drawings is shown one of the forms of this invention of which,
Figure 1 presents a plan view of a fold- 25 ing blank provided with slits and scoring to facilitate folding.
Figure 2 is another plan view of one form of the invention showing the box partially made up.
Figure 3 is a perspective sectional view of the Figure 2 on the line 3 3.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of one of the corners of the box in its completely locked condition.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal section of the completely closed box.
Figure 6 is a transverse section of the box.
, Referring to the drawings, the top 10 and the bottom 11 are joined by the portion 12, the said last portion forming one of the ends of the box. The other ends of the box are formed of the portions 15 and 16, and the sides of the portions 13 and 14. Secured to the portion 12 is a folded over piece 17 of the same material, and is secured thereto in any suitable manner, to form a sleeve. Portions 16 are doubled over on the portions 15, and
secured together as at 18, or in any other suitable manner to form an additional pair of sleeves.
Between the sections forming the sides and ends of the box are portions 20 extending from parallel portions forming the opposite sides or ends of the top and bottom portions, having slot 19 severing them from the portions forming the oppositeparallel portions which form the other sides or ends of the top and bottom. The corner locking portions or flaps 2O are scored at 21 to divide it into two portions.
In making up the box after the portions 16 are folded over and secured and the sleeve 17 is secured, the corner portions 20 are slightly buckled and the free edge thereof, which extends slightly beyond portions 15 yand 12 are inserted into the sleeves formed on these sections as shown in Figure 2, up to the score lines 21. In this position all of the sides stand at an obtuse angle to the top and bottom respectively, and if desired the boxes may be nested in this position prior to use. In packing pliable articles such as clothing or rubber goods, it is desirable to have a box stand in this partially formed condition. To completely form the box, it
is then only necessary to slightly urge the ,sides upward so that all of the sides form right angles to each other as illustrated by the closed corner shown in Figure 4.
It will be readily seen from the above description of the drawings that the corner locking portions 2O may also be contiguous with the end portions 15 and 12, and have the sleeves formed of the portionsV 14 and 13 with the slots between the said portions and the corner portions 2O instead of as at 19, and in this form the sleeve 17 would be obviated.
As described in the foregoing, a folding box is provided wherein articles may be easily and conveniently packed to the full extent ofthe box, while the box at the same time is very rigid and compact.
Vhat I claim is:
1. A folded box comprising a blank having defined therein by means of score lines, top, bottom, a connecting portion between said `top and bottom forming one end, side walls, end Vwalls formed of two sections and adapted to be doubled upon themselves and secured to ether to form sleeves, corner flaps extending rom said side walls, und extending beyond the doubled over end walls, and beyond the width of the portion connecting the top and bottom, score lines dividing the corner flaps into two portions, and a separate piece of. material, doubled. over upon itself and seminedito-the top and bottom connecting y ortion to form another sleeve, said corner a, s being adapted to be inserted into and he d by said sleeves to form an interlocking closure between the side and end walls.
2. A folded box comprising a blank having defined therein by means of score lines, top, bottom a. connecting portion between said topaml4 bottom. forming one endy wall, side walis, end wallsformed of two sections and tobe doubled upon themselves and secured together to form sleeves, corner flaps extending. fromfsaid side walls, and extendying` be ond the doubled over end walls and beyon lthe Width of the portion connecting the top; and bottom, score lines dividing the comer ilapsinto two portions, and a seperate piece of material doubled over upon itself andsecured to the top and bottom connecting portion-to form another sleeve, said corner nps being adaptedto be inserted into said sleeves up to the dividing score in the corner flaps, to form an interlocking closure between the .side and end walls, and to hold the sildeand end wallsy at an obtuse angle to the ltop and. bottom.
3. A folded box comprising a blank havingidefined therein by meansy of score lines, top, bottom, a connecting portion between said `to and bottom forming one end wall, sido'iw s, endwellsrformed of two sections vamiumipted to be doubled upon themselves 40 ndlsecured'together to form sleeves, corner SepeentendingA from said side walls, and ysaid corner flaps being divided by a score line intotwo portions forming e segment of :t circle, and-a. right triangle, the hypothenuse of saidtriangle bein Vgreater than the width of the end walls, an aseparate piece ofimaterial doubled overl upon. itself and, secured to thetop vand bottom connecting portion to form another sleeve, said corner fiaps being adapted to be inserted into and heldby said sleeves to form an interlocking closure between the side and'end walls.
4. A folded box comprising a. blank havf ing 4defined therein by means of score lines, to bottom, a. connecting portion between said top and bottom forming one end wall, side walls, end walls formed of two sections and adapted tobe doubled upon themselves p and secured together to form sleeves, corner maps extending from said side walls, und eX- tonding be ond the doubled over end walls, and beyon .the width of the portion connecting the top and bottom, and :i separate piece of; material doubled over upon itself and i secured vto the top und bottom connecting portion to form another sleeve, said corner fla s being adapted to be inserted into and held y said sleeves to form an interlocking closure between the side and end Walls.
In witness whereof I aiiix my signature.V
