BOX. i i
Application led November 21, 1921. Serial No. 516,805.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, AARON M. BrLLsTEiN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Riderwood, Baltimore County, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification. i
The object of the present invention is. tov
provide an improved box of the collapsible typewhich is not only a simple and strong shipping container but which may also be used as a display box.
The box is' formed of blanks, stamped or cut from sheet material, such as paper, the blanks being flat, so that large numbers may be packed in small space, and being adapted to be quickly assembled or shaped vto receive the articles to be packed. The container presents a neat and attractive appearance, is simple and inexpensive to fabricate, is strong, and is susceptible of being quickly converted 'from a packing container, with lid closed, to a display container, with lid open, the container being supported in an i inclined position by the lid so that the articles therein may more readily be inspected.
The invention may be embodied in various forms and in the accompanying drawing two such forms are illustrated.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form` ofthe box, the lid being'closed;
Figure 2 is a perspective view'of the same box when open;
Figure 3 is a vertical section through the box when closed;
box when open, as shown in Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Figure 4;
Figures 6 and 7 are plan views respectively of two blanks which, when assembled, make up the box illustrated in Figures 1 to 5 inclusive;
Figures 8, 9 and 9a respectively are plan views of blanks which, when assembled, make up the modified form of box illustrated in Figures 10 to 14 inclusive;
Figure 1() illustrates the modified box in closed position;
Figure 11 illustrates this box when open;
Figures 12 and 13 are vertical sections through the box when in closed and open positions respectively, as illustrated in Figures 10 and 11, and Figure 14 is a section on line 14--14 of Figure 13.
The box illustrated in Figures 1 to 5 is Figure 4 is a vertical section through the built up of blanks A and B, illustrated in plan in Figures 6 and 7 respectively, the blank A being the main blank, and blank B a secondary blank of much smaller size. The blank A comprises a bottom portion 10, top portion 11, and side wall portions 12, 13, 14 and 15 respectively. Indented lines or scorings 16 mark the edges of the bottom and the side wall portions 12, 18 and 14 are provided with similar parallel scorings 17 which divide each of these portions into two similar strips. The side wall portion 13 has corner flanges 18 integral therewith, the blank being scored at 19 between the anges and the side wall portion. The top 11 is similar in size and shape to the bottom 10 and is integral with the side wall portion 15, which in reality connects the top and bottom together, and scorings 20 mark the edges of the top, an intermediate scoring 21 being provided so that the` top may be folded upon itself. On the opposite side of the top from portion 15 is a portion 22 divided by scorings 23 into three strips of substantially equal size. After folding, these strips comprise the front edge flange of the top. Top side flange portions are indicated at 11,
' and top corner flanges at 112, a scoring 113 marking the junction between these portions, on each side.
Blank B comprises a side wall portion 24, the edges of which are indicated by the scorings 25, and the corner flanges 26, bottom flange 27, and display card 28 are integral with portion 24, 4though of course bendable relatively thereto.
In bending the blanks to form the box illustrated in Figures 1 to 5, the front edge iange of the top is formed by bending portions 22, 11, and 112, at the scorings until the strips are in the positions shown in Figures 3 and' 4 the cornerflanges being folded between adjacent strips 22. Mucilage may be applied, if desired, to maintain the strips in this position. The bottom iiange 27 of blank B is then secured to the bottom 10 of blank A. in the position illustrated in Figures 2, 8 and 4, after which the side portions, and corner flanges may be bent to position, the two left hand corner flanges being retained by the side wall 12 and the two right hand corner flanges being retained by the side wall 14, each side wall being folded about its scoring 17, inwardly upon itself, thereby forming a retaining pocket for the corner ianges. The
top may be folded so that the box is closed, as shown in Figure 3, or may be folded about the scoring 21, to the position shown in Figure 2, in which the flange at the outer edge of the top acts as a support, which in conjunction with the front edge of the box, supports the same in an inclined position so that its contents may be readily inspected by anyone standing in front of the same. i
In this position the display card 28 may be raised and suitable advertising matter, printed on this card, disclosed to the eye of the observer. When the bo-x is closed,- the display card occupies the position shown in Figure 3.
The blanks for forming the container, illustrated in Figures 10 to 14 inclusive, are shown in Figures 8, 9, and 9a. The larger blank C` has a bottom portion 50 and top portion 51 and side wall portions 52, 53, 54 and 55. Scorings 56 mark the edges of the bottom, and scorings 57 mark the front and rear edges of the top.. The top has also an intermediate scoring 57", as in the first described form of box. Corner fianges 58l are secured to portions 53 and 55, these corner flanges being bendable relatively to thewall port-ions, at scorings 59. The front edge flange portion. for the top is indicated at 60, this portion consisting in three strips of equal size, the adjacent edges of which are marked by scorings 61. Top sidel flange portions are indicated at 62, scorings 63n marking the junction between these portions and the top 51. These side flange portions have corner flanges 64 integral therewith but separated from the top edge flange portion 60. Scorings 65 mark the junctions between the top corner flanges 64 and the top side flanges 62.
'The blank D comprises a long, narrow strip, the width of which is equal to that of a side wall portion and which is divided by scorings 66 into four portions 67 and a small securing fiange 68 at the end. The blank E has a side wall portion 70, bot- "tom flange 71, and display card 72, the joints or scorings marking the margins of these portions being indicated at 73.
In forming or assembling this box 0r carton, the side walls 53, 54 and 55 are bent upwardly. The blank D is then bent along scorings 66, and the securing flange 68 fastened to the opposite end of the blank so that this blank assumes the form of a rectangle. The size of the rectangle thus formed is such that it will fit snugly around the walls 53, 54 and 55 of the blank C to prevent them from spreading. Blank E is then Jfolded and placed imposition as shownV in Figures 11 and 13, and the bottom portion 71 of thisV blank may be secured to the bottom 50 of blank. C. Blank E is rmly secured in place between corner: fianges: 58
and the rear wall 67 of blank D, as shown in Figures 11 and 13, and paste or fastening devices may be employed to hold the parts in this position. The top corner fianges 64 are then bent at right angles to the side flanges 62, and the latter bent at right angles to the top 51. The top edge flange portion 60 is then bent to the position shown in Figures 12 and 13, the corner flanges 64 being retained between the folds of the edge flange, as shown.
lVhen closed, the box is as shown in Figure 10, and when open, as in Figure 11. The rear wall 52 lies without the strip D so that in folding the top to open position, the wall 52 is bent through 270 degrees about the lower rear edge of the box.
The provision of the top side fianges 62 renders edge fiange 6() more rigid, and enables it to serve to more substantially support the box.
The box may be made of paper or other suitable material and may be decorated with advertising matter, as desired. Changes may be made in the shape and design of the blanks without departing from the spirit of the invention, which is not limited in its scope to the forms illustrated and described.
