This invention relates to improvements in Q creased diameter at to, formla shoulder- 3 tobacco pipes and the object of the invention is to provide an improved form of tobacco pipe which Wlll be exceptionally convenient and pleasant to use and in which particles. of q-tobacco or ash are prevented from bemg' drawn into the stem.
A further object is toarrange the air and smoke passages in the bottom'of the bowl in to such a manner as to distribute the draft over a greater area of the bottom and thereby pre-- The invention consists in the construction, all as hereinafter more I particularly de-- scribed, and illustrated in the accompanying-drawings in which,
Figure 1 is a long tudinal sectional elevation ofa p1pe constructed 1n accordance. with the present invention, thepipe being of the w 1 into the annular groove 17 and pass around this groove and finally enter the bore 12 of thestem and in this waythe'draft is dis- *tributed over the bowl and-is not concenclosed bowl type. A,
Figure 2 is 'a top plan viewof va plugused in the improved pipe. i Figure 3is a section on the line 3-3- of Figure 2. i i
Figure 4 is a longitudmal sectional elevaj tion of the ordinary open bowl type of pipe constructed in accordance with the present.
invention.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different views. g r i The improved pipe comprises a bowl portion 10 and a stem portion 11, the bore 12 of the stem communicating withthe bowl at a point spaced upwardly from the bottom'ofv plug 14 the diameter of which is such that. the plug maybe inserted into the bottom open 7 end of the bowl in which position the plug form a' closure for the bottom ofthe 1 5t bowl. to register with the l'bore l2 when the plug is in position andcommunicating withfthis annular groove 17 area numberi o f small passages: 18 providedintheplugwhich extend downwardly from the groove 17 and communicate with the bottom of the cupped portion 16 of the plug, the diameter of these passages 18 being considerably less than that of the bore 12 of the stem 11.
In use air and smoke are drawn through the passages'l8 in the plug and from thence trat'ed at any one point thereof.
By making the passageways 18 considerably smaller than the bore 12. of the stem,
particles of tobacco or ash are prevented from getting into the stem.
that condensation is trapped in the groove'17 I and tends to fall back into the bottom of the bowl through the downwardly inclined passages 18 and therefore will not interfere with the draft. ' From the foregoing it will be apparent that:
the invention-provides an improved tobacco pipe whereby the objects set forth have been 5'1 attained.
Various modificationsm'ay be made in this invention without departing from th spirit V thereof or thescope of the claim, and therefore the exact form shown is to be taken as illustrative only and not in'a limiting sense, and it is desired that only such limitations shall be placed thereon as are disclosed in the prior art or are set forth in the accompanying claim.
What I claim as my invention is A tobacco pipe comprising in combination with a bowl having a stem opening communicating therewith at a point spaced upwardly from the bottom of the bowl, said bowl being open at the bottom for the full internal di ameter thereof, of a plug adapted for insertion into the open bottoniof the bowl to form a closure therefor and extending upwardly into the bowl to a point above the stem opening, the upper end of the plug cupped, said cupped portion forming the bottom for the interior of the pipe bowl and the bottom of the cupped portion lying below the stem opening, the periphery of the plug formed with an annular groove registering with the stem opening, and the plug formed with a plurality of downwardly inclined passages leading from the annular groove to the bottom of the "cupped portion, said downwardly inclined passages in the plug being of smaller diameter than that of the stem opening.
