This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a cool smoking pipe.
The invention has for an object the construction of a smoking pipe which is characterized by a pipe stemwith a novel construction which produces a cool smoke when the pipe is used.
More specifically, the invention contemplates an arrangement of a pipe stem formed of sections, one connected with the bowl and the other with the mouthpiece of the pipe stem. It is proposed to arrange the junction between these sections in a particular manner. It is proposed to provide inter-engaging portions on the adjacent ends of the pipe sections and to arrange longitudinal recesses along the sides of one of the sections, and communicating with radial recesses connecting with a passage for the smoke through the mouthpiece. When the smoke is caused to travel through this path it will be relatively dry and cool.
Still further the invention proposes to provide an element rotative on a reduced portion of the mouthpiece stem section which is to be formed with V-shaped passages connecting with a main smoke passage, to provide longitudinal passages in the outer face of said element connecting with radial passages aligned with portions of said V- shaped passages and to provide anarrangement whereby the element may be held in various turned positions to control the alignment of the radial passages with the V-shaped passages and thus the passage of smoke.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 1 is a transverse sectional view of a pipe constructed according to this invention, a portion thereof being shown in side elevation.

Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of a portion of the mouthpiece stem section, this section being taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a developed View of the reduced portion of the mouthpiece stem section.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view of a pipe constructed according to another embodiment of this invention.
The smoking pipe, according to this invention, comprises a pipe bowl I0 connected with a bowl stem section l I formed with a passage l2 for the smoke. The bore of the pipe bowl ii! is formed with a substantially flat bottom 13. There is a small aperture M in one side of the bottom l3 which connects with the bottom of the passage l2, which is relatively much larger in size than the opening M. A mouthpiece stem section it supports an element It which is engageable into the end of the passage l2 for connecting the sections together. The element Iii may be rotative upon a reduced portion l5 of the mouthpiece stem section Hi. This reduced portion I 5 is formed with V-shaped passages ll connecting with a main smoke passage 28 which is preferably round in cross section, and extends through the mouthpiece stem section. The V-shaped passages H are arranged circumferentially on the, peripheral surface of the reduced portion Is Longitudinal passages is are formed on the outer face of the element it below the center of said element and connect with radial passages ill aligning with portions of the V-shaped passages H. The means for holding the element l'fi in various rotative positions includes a resilient element such as a spring 20 which is coaxially arranged upon the reduced portion lli and which acts against a shoulder 16* formed in the reduced portion 16. The spring 20 also acts against a flange 2| which is fixedly mounted upon the outer end of the reduced portion lfi A plug 22 closes the inner end of the passage l8 so that the smoke is forced to pass through the longitudinal passages l8 through the radial passages l9 and then through the main smoke passage 28 formed in the mouthpiece stem section Hi. The spring 20 urges the element I6 so that an end portion I6 engages against a portion of a shoulder I5 formed on the mouthpiece stem section I5. These engaging surfaces may be roughened or serrated so that they readily maintain relative positions.

has been disclosed in which the mouthpiece stem 15' and the reduced portion I 5 are separate pieces connected by a threaded portion l5". In other respects this form. of the invention is similar to the previous form and similar parts may be recognized by the same reference numerals.
The operation of the device is as follows: When smoke is drawn through the mouthpiece it will travel from the pipe bowl l through the passage Hi, the passage l2, the longitudinal passages l8, the radial passage l9, and the passage 28 to the smokers mouth. The element l6 may be turned relative to the mouthpiece I for a dual purpose. First, to control the alignment of the passages 5 with the passages l1, and thus the passage of smoke. Then again, the element It may be turned to different positions to change the relative positions of the longitudinal passages l8 to the base of the passage l2. This will control to some degree the amount of moisture permitted to pass through the pipe stem.
It is to be understood that this invention may be used in connection with all types of smoking pipes, irrespective of their shapes or material 1' they are made of.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In a. smoking pipe, a pipe stem comprising a bowl stem section with a passage for smoke and a mouthpiece stem section having an element engageable into said passage for connecting said sections together, said element having radial passages and being slidably supported on a reduced portion of said mouthpiece stem section, longitudinal passages on the outer face of said element connecting with said radial passages, said longitudinal passages being located below the center of the said reduced portion.
2. In a smoking pipe, a pipe stem comprising a bowl stem section with a passage for smoke and a mouthpiece stem section having an element engageable into said passage for connecting said sections together, said element having radial passages and being rotatively supported on a reduced portion of said mouthpiece stem section which has V-shaped passages connecting with a main -'.'7 smoke passage, longitudinal passages on the outer face of said element connecting with said radial passages aligning with portions of said V-shaped passages, and means for holding said element in Various rotative positions to control the alignment of said radial passages and said V-shaped passages.
3. In a smoking pipe, a pipe stem comprising a bowl stem section with a passage for smoke and a mouthpiece stem section having an element engageable into said passage for connecting said sections together, said element having radial passages and being rotatively supported on a reduced portion of said mouthpiece stem section which has V-shaped passages connecting with a main smoke passage, longitudinal passages on the outer face of said element connecting with said radial passages aligning with portions of said V-shaped passages, and means for holding said element in various rotative positions to control the alignment of said radial passages and said V-shaped passages, said longitudinal passages comprising passages on opposite sides of said element.

In a smoking pipe, a pipe stem comprising a bowl stem section with a passage for smoke and a mouthpiece stem section having an element engageable into said passage for connecting said sections together, said element having radial passages and being rotatively supported on a reduced portion of said mouthpiece stem section which has V-shaped passages connecting with a main smoke passage, longitudinal passages on the outer face of said element connecting with said radial passages aligning with portions of said V-shaped passages, and means for holding said element in 1 various rotative positions to control the alignment of said radial passages and said V-shaped passages, comprising a resilient element acting against a shoulder portion formed on said element and a flange portion mounted on said r duced portion.
5. In a smoking pipe, a pipe stem comprising a bowl stem section with a passage for smoke and a mouthpiece stem section having an element engageable into said passage for connecting said sections together, said element having radial passages and being rotatively supported on a reduced portion of said mouthpiece stem section which has V-shaped passages connecting with a main smoke passage, longitudinal passages on the outer face of said element connecting with said radial passages aligning with portions of said V-shaped passages, and means for holding said element in various rotative positions to control the alignment of said radial passages and said V-shaped passages, comprising a resilient element acting against a shoulder portion formed on said element and a flange portion mounted on said reduced portion, said resilient element serving to force an end of said element against a shoulder on said mouthpiece stem section, said resilient element comprising a coaxial spring mounted on said reduced portion.
