LABEL PASTING MACHINE Filed June 1a, 192? 5 Sheets-$11,883 2 Patented Sept. 8, 1931 UNITED STATES MARIO VOLI, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA LABEL BASTING MACHINE Application filed .Tune 16, 1927.. Serial. No. 199,214.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in label pasting machines, and has for its primary object toprovide an exceedingly simple and effective machine of this description by which paste may be rapidly and accurately applied to one side of a label, and the label thus treated delivered toa table or surface upon which it may be applied to a can or other container.
A further object of my invention is toprovidemeans for accurately spacing the feed rolls relative to the paste roll and provide for the changing ofthis spacing for determining the exact amount of paste tobeapplied to the I5 feed roll for transference to the labels.
A still further object of my invention 1s to provide means for taking ofi the labels from the feed rolls.
With these and other ends view, my invcntionconsists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims;
In order that those skilled in the art to 2 which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will: describe its construction indetail, referring by numerals to the accompanying draw ngs forming a part of this application rnwhicl'l:
Fig. 1 is a rear elevation of the mach ne built in accordance with my improvement.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1.
Fig. is a detailed plan of the takeoff for V p the lower feed roll.
- Fig. l is a detailed view pf the lower feed roll.
Fig. 5 is a sectional end elevation of the machine, the driving gear being partially broken away.
Fig. 6 is a detailed view of the train of gearing for causing the paste and feed rolls to revolve in unison.
Fig. 7 is an end view of the-paste reservoir. Fig. 8 is a plan view of the portion of the: paste reservoir. I
Fig. 9 is a perspective of a portion. of thefeed table, showing the attaching bracket.
In carrying out my invention as herein embodied, 10 represents a tank or reservoir, 5 the interior of which is divided into two compartments 11 and 12,- by the partition 13", and this'tank is supported upon suitable legs, such. as indicated at 14.
One side of the tank. has formed therein a bearing slot 15, the lower portion of the latter being of less width than the upper portion thereof, for the purpose hereinafter exiplained, and the opposite side of the tank'has formed therein the bearing slot 16 which latter is. of the same width through. its height.
17 represents a shaft, the inner end of. which is jjournalled in the bearing block 18, which latter is fitted within the slot-'16, while the outer end of this shaft is journ'alled in the lower and narrow portion of the slot 15; this shaft carries the dipping roll 19.
also represents: a shaft which is fournalle'd in the hangers 21, and on. this shaft is carried the coating roll 22, and this roll is a spaced relative to the roll 19, as hereinafter set forth.
23 represents two frames, each of which is pivoted at 24 to one side" of the tank, and these frames carry the hangers 21 and are made adjustable by the screw rods 24, which latter are threaded in the outer ends of theframes, and are provided with thumb holds" 25 for their proper manipulation.
Thus, it will be seen that the roll 22 may be raised or lowered and properly aligned by" theproper manipulation of the screw rods 24;
26" represents a shaft upon which the discs- 27 of the skeleton presser roll are positioned apart by the spacers 2'8, and this skeleton roll or the discs thereof contact with the coating roll 22. by gravity, the shaft 26' being iou'rnalled in slotted bearings in the frames 23', to permit free vertical movement of this shaft.
29 represents two coil springs, the lower ends being, attached to the studs 30, while their upper ends are attached to the outer ends of the frames 23 so as to hold theframes ping and coating rol ls apart, such as when heavy glue is to be used, I provide the arms 31 which are pivoted to the sides of the tank at 32 connected by the screw rod-s 33- with the frames 23, and these arms may be seated upon the shoulders 34 of the dipping roll and the corresponding shoulders of the coating roll 22 may rest upon these arms, thus accurately determining the spacing between the paste roll and the lower feed roll, which in turn determines the exact thickness of the paste applied to the lower feed roll, and where this is of thick material, such as heavy glue, it will be forced upon the feed roll in an even and predetermined thickness which is essential in certain classes of work.
35 represents a combined table and cover and is provided with depending brackets 36 which have open end slots 37 therein for sliding over the bolts 38, by which this bracket is attached to one wall of the tank, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The inner portion of the table 35 serves as a cover for the storage compartment formed at the front portion of the tank by the partition 13, this compartment serving to hold a reserve supply of paste or glue.
Labels placed upon the table 35 and fed forward by hand will be received by the coating rolls 22 and the presser roll 27 and carried rearward, during which movement the paste or glue will be applied to the under side of said labels by their contact with the roll 22, and from thence these labels will pass on to the receiving table 39 which has its inner end slightly offset so as to properly bear upon the roll 22 and receive the labels from this roll, so that such labels may be applied to cans or other containers upon the table 40 which latter is hinged to the rear wall of the tank and provided with a supporting arm 41 for holding it in position permitting it to be swung downward. One end spring 42 is connected to the receiving table 39, the other end of said spring being connected to the pin 43 upon the outer wall of the tank so as to give the table 39 a spring pressure upon the roll 22. To provide against the labels being carried around the presser roll 27, I provide a series of fingers 44 which are pivoted upon the rod 45, these fingers bearing upon the under side of the spacers 28 by the action of the spring 45.
46 represents the motor upon the shaft, which has the pinion 47 meshing with the gear wheel 48, the latter being secured upon the shaft 17 and on this shaft is also secured a gear wheel 49 which meshes with the gear 50 upon the shaft 20, and this gear 50 in turn meshes with the gear 51 secured upon the shaft 26 so that all of the rolls are caused to revolve in unison and in the proper directions.
The teeth of the gears 49, 50 and 51 are such as to allow for the adjustment of the rolls relative to each other, without passing out of mesh.
52 represents an inclined board located within the paste compartment of the tank, and so set as to cause the paste within this compartment to be fed by gravity to the roll 19.
From the foregoing description, the operation of my improvement will be obviously as follows:
The proper amount of paste or glue is placed within the compartment of the tank in which the roll 17 is mounted and a suflicient reserve quantity of such material is placed in the reserve compartment and the motor started so that by the revolving of the paste roll 19, paste will be carried to the roll 22, when by one of the operators feeding labels to the rolls, paste will be applied to the under side thereof, while the other operator manipulating cans or other containers supported upon the table 40 will revolve these labels and manually apply them to the containers.
On account of the simplicity of the construction and operation of the machine, these operations will be carried on rapidly, thus re ducing the label cost, while producing highgrade work.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is:
1. A label pasting machine comprising a tank, two frames pivoted at their forward ends to the upper forward portion of the tank, means to selectively limit the downward movement of said frames, hangers depending from said frames, a coating roll journalled in said hangers, a presser roll journalled in the frames and coacting with the coating roll, a dipping roll journalled within the tank for coaction with the coating roll, and means to transmit motion to the several rolls.
2. A label pasting machine comprising a tank, two frames pivoted at opposite sides of the tank, hangers depending from said frames, a coating roll journalled in said hangers, a dipping roll journalled in the tank for coaction with the coating roll, a presser roll carried by the frames and including a shaft, discs mounted on said shafts, spacers mounted on said shafts between the several discs to maintain them in desired spaced relation, a rod carried by the frames, a series of fingers pivoted upon said rod and projecting between the discs, and means for resiliently holding said fingers against the spacers.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature.
MARIO VOLI.
