This invention relates to improvements in pastel-s, that is apparatus for applying paste to sheets of paper movii'ig` through apaper handlinp` machine, such for instance as a folding machine. Devices of this character, as previoiflsly constructed, have been open to the objection that the width of the paste line which they applied was too great. This is practically unavoidable in the single disc pasters heretofore used 'for the reason that paste clings to the sides of the disc as well as being collected upon the periphery thereof.
One of the objects of the present invention, therefore, is the provision of a paster which shall be capable of applying paste in a line line of constant cross section.
Another object is the provision of means within the paste well `.tor agitating the paste and overeoniing the diillculty, noticed in previous constructions, of the disc or wheel which enters the well cutting` a path through the paste and hereafter gathering an insuilicient amount oi' paste.

In order to illustrate one possible application oi the invention I have shown in the drawings fragments of a. folding machine of the buckle told type including' diagonal roll- Serial No. 288,901.
ers 10 of a horizontal feed table, a fixed plate 11 at the delivery end of said table, and a feed Jroll 12 which may be one of a set of rolls in a fold section. I have also illustrated at i3 a square bar extending across the machine parallel to the shaft 12 which bar constitutes a support for the paster, and a rotating splined shaft 14 by means of which the paster mechanism is actuated. A sheet of paper traveling through the machine, and in the process ot being pasted, is indicated at A.
A bracket which carries the paster proper is shown at 15. Itis clamped down upon the bar 13 by means of a. clamping plate 16` and a stud 1i' which is threaded into the bracket trom below. Additional clamping and adjusting studs 18 are threaded downwardly through the bracket to bear at their ends upon the bar 13, these latter studs being provided with locking nuts 19. By loosening the studs 1"? the bracket 15 may be moved along the bar from one position of adjustment to another, aiter which the studs 17 may be again screwed inwardly to clamp the parts against movement.
Upon the shaft 14 I mount a pinion 19 which keyed to turn with the shaft but is capable oi longitudinal adjustment thereupon. The bracket 15 is provided With thinges extending' inwardly toward the shaft 14 to engage the sides of pinion 19 and move is upon the shaft whenever the bracket is adjusted transversely of the machine. The bracket also carries a bushing or bushings in which the shaft 14 rotates. It is not my intention, however, to permitthe shaft 14 to take a. maj or portion of the load imposed by the weight o1e the pastor, the bar 13 being the `principal supporting element.
The paste container or well 21 is supplied with ashouldered Iiange 22 which rests upon the upper end of bracket 15 and is removably secured thereto by means of a stud 23. The well has a hinged cover 24. At one end the bottom of the well is inclined inwardly as indicated at 25, and the base of the Well is also inclined downwardly and forwardly as indicated at 25, this being for the purpose of directing the paste toward the delivery p0rtion of the Well. This delivery portion is pair of lugs 30, 31 secured to the well 21 by screws orthe like. The shaft 28 extends into this casing where it carries a gear 32 that meshes with a gear 33 tobelmentioned later.
On'the forward wall of the well 21there is a bearingdug 34 in which is mounted a shaft 35 that carries a paste transferV disc 36. The `latter extends through a slot in the front wall of the well 21 into the compartment 26 `at the bottom of the well; It also passes through a trough 57 Von the outside of the 'well placed lthere to catch excess paste and direct the same back into the compartment 26.
=The'shaft 35 also extends into the gear casing '29 where 1t carries the gear 33, above mentioned.- Beyond the gear 3.3 shaft 35 carries 'another gear. 37 which meshes with an idler gear-38 that rotates upon a shaft 39 mounted on the well 21. The gear 38 in turn meshes with the pinion 19 on shaft 14 whenever the paster is in position upon the bracket 15.
Pivotally mounted upon the shaft 35 there is a swinging arm 40, in the lower end of which is journaled a shaft 41 carrying a pasting disc 42 and also a gear 43 which meshes with gear 37. Above its paste point the arm 40 is provided withV a finger 44, through which extends a threaded stem 45 that is lanchored in the front wall of the well 21.
A knurled nut 46 is threaded upon the stem 45 and bears against thewforward side of the finger 44, while a coil spring'47 bears against the rear side thereof. Threading of the nut 46 inwardly or outwardly, therefore, `serves to swing the arm 40 upon itspivot and to adjust the clearance between the pasting disc 42 andthe paper'A. Y
It will be vobserved vthat the periphery of the discf 36 is grooved in order to collect paste/readily, whilethe periphery of theV disc 42 is V-shaped, rthat is with the point of the V outward, inorder to deposit paste upon the vpaper in 'a line line.
,In the operation of the device, the well 21 being filled with paste, and the nut 46 being adjusted to bring the pasting disc 42 into the proper position above the paper A, power is vtransmitted from shaft 14 through pinion 19, and gears 38 and 37 to shaft 35, and thence through gear 3.3 and gear 32 to shaft 28 upon which is mounted the vagitator disc 27. The
' latter is thus rotated inthe direction of the arrowrin Fig. 3.
The disc 275 has a stirring action upon the paste'in the well proper, the paste being geni erally in a seini-fluid condition, and it also collects paste upon its side and edge surfaces and carries the same over into the compartment 26, the paste being stripped from the disc by the walls of the compartment on either side of the slot through which the disc passes. Furthermore, that partV of the disc 27 which extends into the compartment 26 is in close proximity to the transfer disc 36, and
hence is in a position to deliver paste directly onto that disc and'to keep the-paste in compartment 26 in the neighborhood of disc 36 weil mixed and relatively soft and fluid.
The rotation of the shaft 35 rotates transfer disc 36 in the direction of thefarrow in Fig. 3.l This disc extends into the compartment 26. and collects paste therefrom inthe groove Vin the periphery of the disc. vThis paste, or a portion of it, is delivered onto theI v surface of the disc 42, the pointed edge of Vwhich cutsthrough the paste film B carried in the groove of the transfer disc 36, as illustrated in Fig. 5, and its even distribution over the surface is assured by the fact that gears 37 and 43 are' made of different size so as to bring about a wiping action of one disc upon the other instead of a mere' laying on of-paste, as would occur if the discs rotated at the same speed.
r'lhe drive to the pasting disc 42 is such that its llower periphery moves in the same direction as the paper A and preferably at a speed which is not greatly ldierent from the speed of movement of the paper. However, it is desirable to maintain some difference in speed between them in order to provide a wiping action here also. l
rlhe drawings and description herein have been made somewhat specific in order to fully disclose the invention in one of its forms, but I desire to be understood that such disclosure vis Vprimarily illustrative in character and is not to be construed as limiting the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what vI claim is 1. A paster for use in paper handling machines, comprising a paste well, said well 'having a compartment in the bottomthereof adapted to receive paste from said well, mechanically driven means for assisting the iiow of paste into said compartment, and a rotating disc mounted outside of the well to extend into said compartment through a slot in the well.
2. A paster for use in paper handling machines, comprising a paste well, a rotating paste transfer disc with a circumferentially Vgrooved periphery arrangedto gather paste from the paste well, and a rotating pasting disc having its periphery arranged to take paste from the groove in said transfer disc.
V3. A paster` for use in paper handling machines, comprising a' paste well, a rotating paste transfer discwith a circumferentially grooved periphery mounted to extend into said Well through a slot in the Wall thereof, and a rotating pasting disc arranged to contact with paste in said grooyed periphery, said pasting disc being adapted to cause the paste upon its periphery to contact with the surface of paper moving through the niachine.

A paster for use in paper handling inachines, comprising a paste Well, said Well hav- .ing a compartment in the bottoni thereof adapted to receive paste from said Well, mechanical means for assisting the flow of paste :into said compartment, a rotating transfer disc and a rotating pasting disc, said transfer disc being mounted outside of lthe Well to extend into said compartment through a slot in the Well, and being arranged to transfer paste from said compartment to the periphery of said pasting disc.

A paster for use in paper handling inaehines, comprising a paste supply, a rotating transfer disc, means enabling said disc as it rotates to gather' paste from said supply.l a supporting arm mounted to swing upon an axis concentric with the axis of said transfer disc, a pasting disc rotatably mounted upon said arm with its periphery adjacent the periphery of said transfer dise, and adapted to be arranged directly above a horizontal sheet to be pasted, means for rotating said transfer and pasting discs, and means for regulating the angular' position of said arm. `whereby the position of said pasting disc with respect to the paper to be pasted may be controlled.
