By providing a hard pressure roller pressing the fabric against a soft applying roller, the fabric is pressed into the yielding 'surface of the applying roller and all of the paste on the applying roller is forced into the fabric. It will also be obvious that this construction insures an even application of the paste to the silk notwithstanding inequalities in the surfaces of the pressure and applying rollers, or inexact alinement of said rollers.
By adding a soft controller roller, as shown in Figs. 10 and 11, the capacity of the machine for applying different varieties of finish to the fabric is increased. When it is desired to apply relatively large quantities of paste the hard roller 59 is shifted out of contact with soft roller is pressed against the applying roller causing deformation of both rollers a c the squeezing point. Owing to the fact that the surfaces of both rollers are yieldable a relatively large quantity of paste may pass between the rollers.
In order that the regulating roller 17 inay be readily cleaned when desired, a cleaning brush 73 is provided adapted to be shifted into and outof engagement with the roller. The brush 73 comprises a bar, preferably somewhat shorter than the roller 17, and having a strip of sponge or other suitable material secured to one side thereof. The brush is held at its ends to a pair of arms 7 51 by means of screws 75 which pass through elongated slots 76 in the arms. he arms 74 are pivotally held at 77 to the roller. supporting means and are adapted to be swung upwardly against stops 78 formed on. the arms 22 to support the brush in its inopera tive position.
