struction, cheap to manufacture, and convenient in use.
In the accompanying drawing, forminga part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench embodying my invention, showingv the jaws in closed position, v
T Figure 2 is asimilar view with the jaws somewhat opened, parts being'shown in central vertical longitudinal section,
Figure3is a similar view, with the jaws further opened and parts in central vertical longitudinal section, and Figure l is a per- 80 spective view of a sleeve included in anad- 'justabl e connection or turn-buckle between the jaws. r
In'the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration, is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the-numeral 5 designa'tes a-handle, provided at its forward end with an enlarged portion 6, carrying a: shank 7, preferablyintegral therewith, and this shank carries'a. stationary jaw 8. Arranged opposite the stationary jaw 8 is a movable jaw 9,-carr'ied by a movable'shank 10. The jaws 8=and 9 are provided upontheir inner --faces with serrations 1'1, as shown. The enlarged portion 6'is provided upon one side of theshank 7' withxa recess 12, having a curved wall 13, as shown. This recess receivesthe rear end of the'movable shank 10, havingiacurved face 14. The recess 12 has a greater width: than the end' of the'shank 10,- as' shown.
Y The shank 10 is provided, near its rear end, with a transversely inclined slot 15, which slot is longitudinally curved, as shown. The slot 15-is disposed at anangle of about 45 to the longitudinal axis of the shank 10. The slot 1 5 receives a pin 16, rigidly attached to the side walls of the recess 12- This pin engages the rear wall ,ofthe slot 15 and thereby limits the forward movement of the shank 10, and will engage the forward end wall of the slot 15, to thereby limit the rear,- ward movementof, the shank 10. The shank 10' is. projected forwardly by means of a compressiblecoil spring 17, held within a recess l8, and the forward end of this spring receives a lug 19, projecting from the rear end of the shank 10.
An adjustable connecting element or turnbuckle 20 is employed for connecting the jaws 8 and 9. This adjustable connecting element comprisesbolts 21, provided at their outer ends with eyes'22. 7 These bolts are arranged withintransverse recesses, 23, formed within the jaws, and the eyes 22 receive pins or pivots 24-, attached to the aws. The bolts 21 receive thereon a rotatable .sleeve 24:, having screw-threaded engagement therewith, the threads ofthe bolts being positively pitched. The sleeve is provided with a milled head 25, arranged centrally thereof, and this milled-head is disposed adjacent to recesses or depressions-26, so that it may beconveniently engaged with the thumb or fingers, to turn the same. I 7
The operation of the wrench is as follows:
The sleeve 24 is turned to move the jaw 9 from the stationary jaw 8, for a considerable distance, depending upon the size of the work, such as'a pipe. The jaws. are then'applied to the opposite sides of the work, and when the handle 5 is swung downwardly to turn the work, the pressure'shifts the movable shank IOlongitu'dinally and rearwardly with relation to the shank 7 but, at the same time, the pin 16'beingarranged within the slot 15, will shift the rear end of the shank 10 out wardly, causing the movable jaw 9 to be swung inwardly, for binding action-with the work. The reverse of this action occurs when the handle 5 is swung in the opposite direc- Ill tion, for taking a new hold on the work, the shank 10 being projected forwardly by the spring 17, when the pressure is released therefrom.
It is to be understood that the form ofmy invention herewith shown and described, is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention, or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A wrench comprising a handle having a stationary shank and a stationary jaw carried by said shank, a longitudinally movable shank carrying movable jaw arranged opposite the stationary jaw, said movable shank being provided near its rear end with a transversely inclined slot, a pin secured to the handle and operating within the transversely inclined slot, and an adjustable coupling arranged in advance of the slot and pin and having pivotal connections with both jaws for shifting the movable jaw laterally with relation to the stationary jaw, the arrangement of the transversely inclinedslot and pin and adjustable coupling being such that the rear end of the movable shank is automatically shifted laterally and outwardly upon the rearward longitudinal movement of the movable shank.
2. A wrench comprising a handle having a stationary shank and a stationary jaw carried by said shank, a longitudinally movable shank carrying a movable jaw arranged 0pposite the stationary jaw, said shank being provided near its rear end with a transversely inclined slot, a pin secured to the handle and operating with the transversely inclined slot, an adjustable coupling arranged in advance of the inclined slot and pin and having pivotal connections with both jaws for shifting posed at an angle with relation to the longitudinal axis of the movable shank, a pin secured to the handle and operating within said slot, and an adjustable coupling arranged in advance of the slot and pin and pivotally connected with both jaws for shifting the movable shank laterally with relation to the stationary j aw, the arrangement of the slot and rpin and coupling permitting the rear end of the movable shank to be automatically shifted laterally and outwardly upon the rearward longitudinal movement of the movable shank.
4c. A wrench comprising a handle provided at its forward end with an enlarged portion carrying a stationary shank and a stationary jaw carried by such shank, the en-' larged portion of the handle also having a recess therein, a longitudinally movable shank having its inner end disposed insaid recess and at its outer end carrying a jaw arranged for disposition opposite the stationary jaw, the inner end of the movable shank having'an inclined slot, a pin passing through the slot of the movable shank and having connection with the handle whereby to effect a pivotal connection of the movable shank with the handle, means for coupling he movable shank and 1ts aw to the fixed shank so as to be movable longitudinally and laterally with relation to the stationary shank and its jaw, the arrangement of the said slot and pin being such that the rear end of the movable shank is automatically shifted laterally and outwardly upon the rearward longitudinal movement of the movable shank. I v
