PIPE-Wannen.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patentes-d July 22, gg.
Application led December 27, 1918. Serial No. 268,531.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WALTER R. LANerono, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coalinga, in the county of Fresno and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches; and I do declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make ,and use the same. j
My invention has for its object to provide an extremely simple andl inexpensive, yet a highly eilicient and reliable Wrench for pipes and other cylindrical parts, the arrangement', being such as to positively prevent the wrench from dropping out of place after it has once been applied.
With theI foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel features of construction and vunique association of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings is a side elevation of the wrench showing the same in operative position upon a pipe.
Fig.' 2 is a side elevation partly in section showing the jaws released from the pipe.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing Aabove briefly described, the numeral 1 designates a preferably straight oscillatory handle having in its front end a diagonal cam slot 2 which is preferably located at one side of the longitudinal center of the handle as shown. Pivoted at 3 to the handle l, in rear ofthe slot To permit easy application of the tool tothe work and removal therefrom, yet to retain the jaws 5 and 7 in such relation as to extend properly around such work, the front ends of said jaws are detachably connected by a suitable spring pressed latch 12' preferably housed within recesses 13.
u Positioned in front ofthe odset end 4 of. jaw 5, is a curved pipe engaging shoe l-t` having in its rear side a recess 15 into which the slotted front end of the handle 1 extends, a pin 16 being passed across said recess and throng the slot to pivotallyconnect the shoe and h dle and to project said shoe into engagement with the pipe when the handle 1 is moved in onedirection (see Fig. 1) and to withdraw said shoe from contact with the pipe when the handle is shifted in the opposite direction as seen in Fig. 2. When this movement of the handle takes place, the shoe abuts the Shoulder 6 (and is thus limited in its movement transverse of the handle, with the result that the cam slot 2 and pin 6 come into play to Withdraw said shoe from the work as in Fig. 2.
From the. foregoing, it will be seen that the wrench is simple, inexpensive, highly etiicient, and durable; and since probably the best results are obtained from the details set forth, they are, preferably used, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous minor changes may well be made.
I claim A pipe wrench comprising an oscillatory handle having in. its front end a transverse diagonal slot, a curved jawl having its rear end ol'set rearwardly from the arc of said jaw and pivoted to Said handle in rear of said diagonal slot, a second curved jaw opposed to said rst named jaw and having its rear end offset rearwardly from the arc of the jaw and pivoted to said handle in rear ofthe pivot of said first named jaw, means for-detachably connecting the front ends of said jaws, a curved pipe engaging shoe in front of said oiset end of the rst named jaw and having a recess into which the slot-y ted front end of the handle projects, and a pin extending across said recess and through said slot, said pin and slot coaeting to force said shoe against the pipe when the handle is moved in a direction to contract 'said jaws and serving to withdraw said shoe when the handle is moved in the opposite direction, said irstnamedj'aw having a shoulder at the point of ofset of its rear end to limit the movement of said shoe transversely of the handle when the latter is moved to release the jaws.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto Set my hand.
