This invention relates to display boxes and more particularly to display boxes adapted to hold articles such as cigars, which require substantial protection from atmospheric conditions.

The object of the invention is to provide a packing case or box adapted to protect its contents to a substantial extent from changes in atmospheric conditions, and also adapted to automatically adjust itself upon being opened, to attractively display the contents at a convenient angle of vision to customers when the box is positioned either within or upon a show counter. The invention consists in a novel construction arrangement and combinations of parts hereinafter more particularly specified and claimed.

One sheet of drawings accompanies this specification as part thereof, in which like reference characters indicate like parts throughout.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved box opened.

Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section substantially medial of the box, showing same opened.

Figure 3 is a View similar to Figure 2, showing the box closed.

The improved box or display container comprises three tray parts, two of which are of similar dimensions and constitute the box proper, while the third similar tray part is smaller and adapted to seat within the box parts.

The bottom member 1 is provided with marginal walls t and the top 2 is provided with similar marginal walls 5, the walls 5 being adapted to seat upon the walls 4:.

The tray 3 is provided with marginal walls 6 which are of a height greater than the marginal walls 4 but not quite as high as the combined marginal walls 4 and 5 when the latter are in closed position.

Two adjacent marginal walls 4 and 5 are associated by a hinge member 7 herein illustrated as a flexible strip of paper or cloth, secured as by an adhesive to the outer surfaces of these walls and a similar strip of flexible and resilient material 11 is positioned Serial No. 524,379.

on the inner faces of the same walls to operate as an elastic stop to limit the raising of top 2 with respect to bottom 1.

The opposite marginal wall 4 of the bottom is associated with the adjacent marginal wall 6 of the tray as by means of a hinge 8 herein illustrated as a similar flexible strip similar the top edges of tray walls 6 in close sealing contact with top 2.

Upon the lifting of top 2, spring 9 will raise tray 3 with respect to bottom 1 into an inclined position limited by the stop position of top 2 which in turn is controlled by the flexible stop member 11. In this position it will be apparent that the contents of tray 3 will be advantageously displayed for ready inspection and without any adjustment what ever.

Various modifications in the precise construction and arrangement of parts will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art, but within the scope of the present invention as claimed.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim:

A display box comprising a bottom with marginal walls, a top with marginal walls adapted to seat on the marginal -walls of the bottom, a tray with marginal walls, adapted to seat on the bottom and within the marginal walls thereof, the marginal walls of the tray having their top edges in a common plane being of greater height than those of the bottom, hinge means connecting adjacent marginal walls of the top and bottom, and hinge means connecting the opposite marginal wall of the bottom with the adjacent marginal wall of the tray and spring means adapted to force the tray into constant engagement with the top when closed.
