This invention has reference to looms for weaving tufted pile fabrics, and is a further improvement in or modification of the invention disclosed in the specification of my prior Patent No. 1,767,758, dated June 24th, 1930,
which describes and claims a two-bladed tuft cutter mechanism the shearing action of which 1s governed by facial spring pressure separately applied to a plurality of blade sections disposed end to end to constitute one or other of the cutter blades.
In the sectional cutter blade according to my said prior specification, the facial spring pressure is applied to each individual blade section by means of a pair of springs disposed respectively at or towards opposite ends of said section.
The present invention consists essentially in an varrangement wherein each individual blade section is pivotally mounted at one end, upon either a stationary or a floating pivot, and is adapted for the application of facial spring pressure at the opposite end. The invention consists further in an arrangement 'f wherein each blade section is fixed to a separate carrier plate which is pivoted at one end upon either a fixed or a floating pivot pin which in turn is suspended from the supporting block by means of a spaced pair of adjustable eyebolts or the like, and wherein a facial pressure spring is interposed at the opposite end between the carrier plate and the supporting block, the carrier plate being preferably associated with an abutment on the supporting block for the purpose of preventing transverse displacement of the blade section. f
In order that the invention may be clearly understood and readily Vcarried into practice, reference may be had to the appended eX- planatory sheet of drawings, upon Which:-
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the sec tional cutter blade of a tuft cutter mechanism in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a plan of the same.
Figure 3 is a section through a pivot pin and pair of suspending eyebolts on the line 3-3 of Figure Figure 4 is a section through a limiting stud or stop on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a section through a pressure spring on the line 5 5 of Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a rear elevation of a modication in which each cutter blade section has a floating pivot pin.
fn a convenient method of carrying the invention into effect, as applied to a Royal AX- minster type of carpet loom, the construction and operation of the cutter blade mechanism is similar to that described in the specifica-y tion of my aforesaid prior Patent N o. 1,767,- 75,8, except that in the sectional cutter blade the individual blade sections are adapted for flexible pivotal mounting instead of having a flexible parallel sliding movement upon supporting studs. Each cutter blade section c, attached to its respective carrier plate o, is sup} orted at its foremost end7 adjacent the terminal lead finger c, upon a horizontal pivot pin OZ accommodated within a bearing aperture bored transversely through the carrier plate b, this pivot pin (l being suspended from thesupporting block e by means of a pair of eyebolts f which encircle the pin and which are adjustably secured by nuts at the top of the block, the eyebolts f being arf ranged at a substantial,transverse spacing for the purpose of preventing transverse rockingof the blade section a. A spiral or other spring g is suitably interposed between the carrier plate b and the block e, for instance within a recess 7a fitted with screwed plug i, at the rearmost end of the cutter blade section a, that is to say, at the end remote from the pivot pin CZ, said spring or a plurality of suchsprings7 in conjunction with a headed stud j or other limiting stop, serving to keep this'rearmost end of the cutter blade section a flexibly pressed apart from the supporting block e, which is formed with adependent longitudinal flange serving as a guide abutment for the outer upright face of the carrier plate b and thereby additionally preventing any possibilty of transverse displacement of the cutter blade section a.
In a modification, as illustrated in Figure 6, the eyebolts f may each be fitted with a spring Z located within a recess in the supporting block c? this arrangement causing the pivotal bearing of the cutter blade section a and its carrier plate to be of a resilient or floating character.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is zl. In a two-bladed tuft cutter mechanism for a loom for weaving tufted pile fabrics, a. sectional cutter comprising a plurality of blade sections each pivotally mounted at one end, and means for the application of facial spring pressure at the opposite end of each blade section.
2. In a two-bladed tuft cutter mechanism for a loom for weaving tufted pile fabrics, a sectional cutter comprising a plurality of separate carrier plates each pivotally mounted at one end and means for the applicationl of facial spring pressure at the opposite end of each carrier plate, and a cutter blade mounted on each carrier plate.
3. In a two-bladed tuft cutter mechanism for a loom for weaving tufted pile fabrics, a sectional cutter blade device which comprises a supporting block, a plurality of longitudinally spaced pairs of eyebolts adjustably depending from said block, a plurality of pivot pins each supported by one of said pairs of eyebolts, a plurality of carrier plates supported end to end upon said block and each pivotally mounted at one end upon one of said pivot pins, a plurality of blade sections disposed end to end in stepped formation and each fixed to a separate carrier plate. and a plurality of pressure springs interposed between the individual carrier plates and said block at the ends remote from their respective pivot pins.
4t. A sectional. cutter blade as claimed in claim 3, wherein the series of carrier plates are associated with an abutment on the supporting block, for the purpose of preventing transverse displacement of the individual blade sections.
5. A sectional cutter blade as claimed in claim 3, wherein the pivotal mounting of each individual blade section is provided by a floating pivot pin.
(i. In a two-bladed tuft cutter mechanism for a tufted pile fabric weavinfr loom, a supporting block7 a plurality of carrier plates, a cutter blade carried by each carrier plate7 a pivotal connection between said block and one end of each carrier plate7 and spring means between the supporting block and the other end of each carrier plate for the application of pressure to the last mentioned end of each plate.
7. A tuft cutter as set forth in claim 6 in which a formation is provided on the block for cooperation with an edge of each carrier plate to guide the latter in its pivotal movements.
8. A tuft cutter as set forth in claim 6 in which the pivotal connection of each carrier plate with the supporting block is yieldable relative to the supporting block.
