plained. The bar is provided centrally `on the back thereof with an integral lugv26, bestY shown in Figs. 3 and 5. The lug is provided with a vertical opening 27 to receive the extension member 15 and a set screw 28 is threaded into the side of the lug and bears against the extension'member to detachably secure the bar to said member.
The barA 24 forms a backing for thev copy 29. A line gauge 30 is secured at the ends by screws 31 or otherwise to the front face of the bar and functions in the usual manner to designate the lines of the copy when the hereinafter mentioned feed rollers arekactuated to feed the copy longitudinally between the bar 24 and theline gauge.
As shown in Figure (3, a pair of feed rollers 32 and 33 are provided with reduced ends which are journaled in suitable openings formed in the above mentioned inverted T shaped extension 25.. The roller 33 is equipped with'a ratchet 34. The roller 32 is spring pressed against the roller 33V and rotates, .as a unit therewith and oppositely theretowhen the ratchet 34 is rotated. A spring pressed pin 35,1best s hown in Figs. 6 and 8, is vslidably fitted in a suitablev opening in'each of the inverted T-shaped extensions 25 and bears against the reduced end of the roller 32. A spring 36 is disposedrin rear of each pin and is held under tension against the pin by a screw 37. The screwV may be advanced or retracted to vary the tension of the spring. Obviously, the openings, in which thereduced ends of thefriction roller' 32 are `journaled, are elongated to form slots 38, best shown inA Fig. 8, to permit ofthe roller being spring pressed against tlieioller 33 by the pins 35, as just described. a l a Y Y For actuating the ratchet 34 la pawl 38 is provided, asbest shown in Figs. vl and 2. The pawl may be rocked outwardly on its pivot to disengage the pawl from the ratchet when it is desired tofeedlthe rollers manually, and for the latter purposea knurled head 46 is formed ini tegral with the feed roller 33 at the opposite end thereof from the ratchet.
As best shown in Figs. l and 2, a key 47l is preferably pivoted centrally on a lug 48 which is formed integral with a base plate 49. rlhe base plate is preferably provided with securing screws 50 which rigidly secure the key to the typewriter support ll laterally of thestandard 13 where it may be conveiiiently struck by the operator to operate the ratchet and pawl feedingdevice.
The key is operatively connected to the f above described V-shaped lever 39'by means of an extensible stem 51. The stem comprises preferably arod base member 52 and a tubular extension member 53 into which the base member telescopes when the standard is retracted or depressed 4to collapse the copy holder. V lThe extensible stem is adjusted vertically by means of a set screwY 54 to correspond in height to the height ofthe standard.
' The stem is pivotally connected, as shown at 55, to the key and is pivotally connected, as shown at56 to the V-shaped lever. -lVhen the key isdepressed by the operator, the extensible stem will be moved vertically to rock theY V-shaped lever and cause the pawl to the key to lift .the extensible stem'while the screw'58 limits return movement of the key due to the action of a spring pressed pin 59 which is mounted on the base between the screw 57v and standard 48 yand bears against the underneath edgeY of the lever. Having thus described the invention, I claim:
l. A copy holder for drop top typewriter desks comprising a vertically adjustable standard adapted to be retracted to substantially the height of the typewriter whereby to lit underneath the closed drop top of the typewriter desk and adapted to be extended to support copy above and in the rearf of the typewriter, a vertically adjustable key stem disposed laterally of the standard and adapted to be retracted and extended t'o correspond in height to the standard and cooperate therewith, a copy holding bar associated with the top of the standard centrally thereof and provided with a lug adapted to receive a portion of the vertically adjustable standard, means carried by the lug for locking the bar in position on the standard, inverted T-shaped extensions carried on the ends of the bar and integral therewith, said extensions comprising vertical legs and forwardly and rearwardly extending legs, a roller having its end portions journaled in corresponding forwardly extending legs, a second roller having its end portions j ournaled in said corresponding rearwardly extending legs and adapted to oooperate with said irst-mentioned roller, a ratchet and pawl feeding device operated by said key stem for actuating one of said rollers, and a pivoted key adapted to be permanently secured to a typewriter support of the desk and operatively connected to the key stem for actuating said stem.
2. A copy holder for drop top typewriter desks comprising a vertier lly collapsible standard, a vertically collapsible key stem disposed laterally of the standard, a key for actuating said stem, means for securing the standard and key rigidly to the typewriter support, said standard and said stem being collapsible to fit underneath the closed drop top of the desk, a transverse bar carried by said standard and provi ded with an inverted T-shaped extension at each end, said extensions being provided with forwardly and rearwardly extending legs, a roller having its ends journaled in corresponding forwardly extending legs of said extension, a second roller carried by corresponding rearwardly extending legs and adapted to cooperate with said first-mentioned roller, a ratchet carried by the last-mentioned roller, a casting adjustable on one of said rearwardly extending legs and having a lug, a V-shaped lever having its apex pivoted on said lug, a pivoted pawl carried by one leg of said lever and engaging said ratchet, said adjustable casting being adapted to permit ready adjustment or removal of the pawl from the bar, and a pivotal connection between the other leg of said lever and said stem.
3. A device of the class described including a vertically collapsible standard comprising a base member adapted to be permanently secured to a typewriter support of a desk and end thereof and integral therewith, said T- shaped extension including forwardly and rearwardly extending legs, a roller having its end portions journaled in corresponding forwardly extending legs, a second roller having its end portions journaled in corresponding rearwardly extending legs and being adapted to cooperate with said first-mentioned roller, said second roller having a ratchet, a casting adjustable on one of said rearwardly extending legs and being provided with a lug, a lever having its apex pivoted to said lug and being formed with legs, a pawl pivotally connected to one of said legs and being adapted to engage said ratchet, and means connected to the other of said legs whereby said lever may be shifted for rotating the ratchet and causing copy to be fed step by step between the rollers.
