WHICH THE ADHESIVE IS FORCED OUT OF RESERVOIRS INTO DISTRIBUTING NOZZLES Application med larch 12, 1981, Serial No. 522,108, and in Germany November 20, 1930.
In cigarette machines methods are known of using a reservoir for the adhesive material from which the adhesive is expelled by a piston into the distributing nozzle. The spindle of the piston is displaced gradually by a weight or a worm drive or the like.
During working the entire cigarette machine must often be stopped, but it is often necessary for parts of this machine, par ticu 1o larly the tobacco rod to be provided with a coating of cigarette paper, to move forward without causm an adhesion. In both cases care must be ta en to ensure that the supply of adhesive is immediately discontinued, and
with the modern very rapidly running machines it is sometimes a question of fractions of seconds. In order to stop the supply of adhesive it has hitherto been necessary for the attendant to do this by removing the weight or stopping the worm gear or the llke,
which takes time and requires that attention be given to a special part of the machine.
In contrast with the above the present invention consists in that with the reservoir over the supply of adhesive there is connected a compressed air pipe which, for the urpose of reducing the air pressure on the a esive, is. out 01f from the supply of compressed air by a regulating valve, and at the same time connected with the atmosphere.
In this manner, by means of a single hand operation or purely mechanically by the actuatingmechanism, the regulating valve can be moved in one or the other direction, so that the air ressure is suddenly and absolutely out o which pressure alone controls the feeding of the distributing nozzles.
The regulating valve is preferably controlled by the actuating mechanism in such manner that when the machine is stopped it is closed in the sense of cutting oif the supply of compressed air; a hand control is also provided for the valve, the disengaging lever being arranged in the vicinity of the point where adhesive is applied, so that the valve can easily be attended to whilst observation of the a lication of adhesive is carried on.

As is well known the cigarette rod St is provided in the former 1 with the envelope of cigarette paper, of which one longitudinal no edge 2 projects from the former and is provided with adhesive by means of the disc 3, and is then secured to the alread enveloped rod. The roller 3 is provided with adhesive in known manner by the distributing roller 4. The adhesive is passed to this distributing roller through the nozzle 5. This nozzle is connected with the adhesive container 7 by a pipe 6. The lid '8 of this container com- 4 municates with a compressed air pipe 9, connected to the compressed air chamber 11 by the pipe 10. The compressed air is passed through the pump 12 to the compressed air chamber. The pump is driven by the motor 19. The pump and the motor are mounted 7 on the machine frame A which rests on the supports B.
In the pipe 9 a valve 13 is inserted. This I valve is connected to rods 14, 15, 16 and 17 at the end of which is a disengaging lever 18.; 30 This disengaging lever is fitted in the vicinity of the point of adhesion in such manner that it can be manipulated with case while watching the point of adhesion.

An adhesive applying device for cigarette machines in which the adhesive is forced out of a reservoir into a distributing nozzle, characterized in that the reservoir located over the supply of adhesive communicates with a comipressed air pipe which in order to remove t e air pressure from the adhesive is adapted to be closed by a controlled valve from the supply of compressed air and at the same time is connected with the outer air.
2. An adhesive applying device according to claim 1, characterized in that the movements of the control valve are controlled by the actuating mechanism in such manner that, when the machine is stopped, the valve is shut so that the supply of com ressed air is cut ofi, and also there is provi ed a hand controlled device for the valves, the disengaging lever of which is actuated in the vicinity of the point where adhesive is applied so that the valve can be easilg operated 1n oon unct1on wlth observation 0 the point where the adhesive is ap lied.
