Description

May 5, 1925. I
A. B. M LAREN GUMMING MACHINE Filed Aug. 12 1921 Patented May 5, 1925.
NITED STATES;
ANDREW BROW'N MCLABEN, Q1 ICE-ONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.
GUMMING MACHINE.
Application filed August 12, 1921. Serial No. 491,757.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Anon-aw BROWN Mo- Lainama subjectof the King of Great Brit .ain, residing at the city of Toronto, in the 5 county of Yorkand Province. of Ontario.
Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gumming Machines, of which the following is a specification. 1 y
My invention relates to agumming machine in which liquid glue or other paste is distributed by a roller suitably j ournaled in th machine, in combination with the necessary operating mechanism, and arranged in 1 longitudinal. relation with a reservoir or trough suitably support-ed and adapted to vbe actuated by foot or hand power, to regulate and supply the liquid glue or paste to the periphery of the roller as it turns either continuously or intermittently accordingly with the class or amount of work passing through the machine and at the discretion of the operator.
I make no especial claim to the operating mechanism, otherthan the combination and functional features of the reservoir or glue trough, which is the main object of my invention, the essential object being to provide against churning, foaming and the overflow of the glue caused by agitation resulting from the turning of the distributing roller, which closes one side of the reservoir, and to prevent any agitation the distributing roller is separated from the main volume of the,
glue by an adjusting and regulating gate positioned in the reservoir in close proximity and in parallel relation with the periphery of the roller.
In the accompanying drawings 40 Figure 1 is a sectional elevational view of the machine; and
Figure 2 is a detail sectionalyicw of the reservoir.
Similar letters of reference refcr lo simi- J lar parts thrmighout the specification and drawings.
a designates one side of the main frame of the machine, in which the various operating parts are suitably journaled and set.
59 I make no claim to the shape or nature of the frame, as my device is especially adapted to be used in connection with any of the various classes of gumming machines.
I) is a gum distributing roller which is suitably journaled crosswise in the main frame of the machine, and 0 is a canvas carrier on which theglued materials are carried away from the distributing roller 6. The canvas carrier 0 consists of an endless canvas belt passing over rollers, one of the rollers oZ being journaled in the main frame a in parallel and close proximity with the distributing roller 1), the other roller (not shown) is supported and journaled in a frame situated at some distance from the machine.
e and f designate a pair of rollers suitably journaled in the main frame of'the machine slightly forward and in parallel relation with the distributing roller 6, at the inner end of the work table g, supported on the front end of the main frame, and from which thematerial to be gummed is passed to the guide rollers e and f, to be directed to the periphery of the distributing roller 6, and by which the gum is equally distributed, and carried to engage with a series of picker fingers it, aivotally carried on a rod 6 extending across the machine.
The gummed material adhering to the periphery of the distributing roller 6 as the roller turns, carries it until it contacts with the fingers It, by which. it is picked off and caused to depositon the canvas carrier, and conveyed to where th operatorsmay remove it to the various uses and purposes for which the gum is applied.
All of the rollers b, d, e and 7 are suitably journaled and arranged to be actuated by mechanism forming part of the machine, which are not shown or described, as they do not form any essential feature of my device, other than in the general modus operandi.
Set in the upper part of the main frame juxtaposition with the periphery of the distributing roller Z), is a reservoir or trough adapted to contain the liquid glue or gum, from which it is distributed to the roller 7) as it revolves, either intermittently or corn tinuously, accordingly with the option of the operator, and the class and amount of the work passing through the machine.
The reservoir or trough j is formed with a bottom declining towards the roller 1). In normal position the back edge of the bottom engages in frictional contact with the face of the roller 6. The reservoir or trough is supported in the main frame a of the machine by a link 70, by which it is adaptedto be actuated either towards or away from the face of the roller 6, by a hand wheel Z, for
the purpose of regulating the amount of glue or gum to be fed to the face of the roller, as it revolves.
Set across the back end of the reservoir or trough 7' is a gate at adapted to vertical adjustment to further regulate the amount of glue or gum passing from the main portion of the reservoir under the gate to feed to the race of the roller, but secondly and especially to prevent the roller from directly contacting and. turning with the main volume of the glue, to eliminate all chance of the roller from churning, foaming and overflowing the glue over the sides and ends of the reservoir or trough, especially as it is found from experience that glue or gum form of spring hinge 0, so that it may be adjusted backwardly as shown in dotted lines, when the machine is out of operation, so as not to stick to the face of the roller and to facilitate in cleaning the parts. i
The gate at is held in adjustable relation with the reservoir or trough by a lever rod ,0), pivotally supported to the "front end of the reservoir by a bracket (1 and connected with the grate by a vertically extending arm r.
a; designates a toot lever pivotally con nected with the main frame, and t is a connecting rod extending between the foot lever and. a crank arm uset in the side ofthe t'rame (t, and pivotally connected with a link 7), attached with the front end of the lever rod 7 By a downwardpressure on the foot lever s the lever rod 79 is tripped, by which the gate may be vertically adjusted, to: open a slight interval between the lower edge ofthe gate and the bot'tomof -the reservoir, to allow for a sufficient flow of the'glne or gum to pass fronrthe reservoir,
to be taken up by the roller Z) as it revolves, and in turn distribute it equally to the paper or other materials directed through the guide rollers e and 7 from the feed table g.
Thefoot lever may be suitably connected up with the starting and stopping mecha- IiiSDl 'ot the machine, by which all of the operating parts may be arranged to operate in unison or otherwise, these features are apart from the essential features of my device, which lies in the gate or battle, arranged in combination with the reservoir or trough. Various modifications may be made in the shape and means for actuating the gate without deviating from the nature oi? my invention.
that I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters PL" '"ent is':
A giiinming machine, in combination with the gum reservoir thereof, said gum reservoir consisting of a metal trough formed with a declining bottom, said reservoir located in parallel and juxtaposition with the distributing roller forming an essential part thereof, an adjustable gate fitted across the back end of the said reservoir, a scraper connected in hinged relation across the top of said gate, said scraper adapted to engage in tangential'relation against the periphery of the said distribi'iting roller, a toot lever arranged in coniunctio-n with the'said gate and said reservoir, said gate adapted to be vertically adjusted by the said footdcvcr tor'the purpose of peri'nitting a. determined quantity of glue to escape :t'roni the said reservoir onto the periphery of the said distributing roller, the said'scraper adapted to gather amt-direct back into the said reserv'oirthe siiperfl'uousgliie from the face of the said roller, substantially as specified.
Signed at Toronto, this 25th day of July, 1921, in the presence ofthe undersigned witnesses.
