BRACELET.

Application filed January 8, 1927. Serial no- 159,875.

This invention relates to a construction of bracelet chain of the extendible type; and the object of this invention is to provide a bracelet having a plurality of similar extendible units connected together in a series to. form a chain, each of the units being detachable one from the other to vary the Working length of the bracelet and adapt it for different sized wrists of different persons.

A further object of the invention is to provide a construction having top and side walls on two telescoping relatively slidable links of each unit whereby a chain made up of these units has an attractive appearance.

A further object of the invention is to provide between two telescopically arranged boxes means to serve in cooperation with one of the boxes to detachably connect the units together.

A still further object of this invention is the provision of an I-shaped connecting member having one of its heads detachable for the mounting of a spring to be guided thereby and to operate between the boxes.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

It is found in the practical construction and operation of extendible bracelets and chains, of advantage to provide a series of connected like units which be detached one from the other by manual manipulation and which provide a broad top wall having side walls or both of two relatively slidable links to hide the working parts of the bracelet, to receive ornamentation and to enhance the appearance thereof. It is also found desirable in such a construction to connect the inner and outer telescoping boxes of this form with a separate connecting member to make the construction strong which connecting member.

also may be utilized in cooperation with one of the boxes for detachably connecting the links together; and the following is a detailed description of the present embodiment of this invention and showing one construction of bracelet by which these advantageous results may be obtained.

With reference to the drawings, 10 designates the inner box which is preferably formed of sheet metal bent into the form illustrated having a top wall 11, side walls 12, end

Within this inner box the connecting member 15 is mounted having a shank 16 with an integral head 17 and a detachable head 18 which has atongue 20tofit within the groove '21 in the shank to removably connect the same thereto. The shank portion 16of the connecting member extends through the opening 22 in the end wall 13 of the box and a spring 23 surrounds the shank 16 to abut against the head 18 and the wall 13 tending to move the inner box relative to the connecting member to contracting position. An outer box or casing 24 is positioned about the inner box 10 and connecting member 15 to house the same and has a top wall 25, bottom wall 26 and side walls 27 from which extend ears 28 having openings 29 to receive the reduced trunnions 30 on the head 17 of the connecting member which protuberances are suitably secured to the cars 28 by riveting over or the like which serves to support the side walls 27 of the casing and prevent separation thereof to open the seam 31 at the bottom.

The detachable connection between the units is secured by fingers 14 on the inner box engaging the head 17 of the connecting member when the units are in substantially right angular position, as illustrated in Figs ure 12, it being necessary to slightly extend the bracelet units in order that their detach-- able connection may be accomplished thus preventing accidental detachment as the springs are tending to hold the units in their contracted po 'tion at all times.

A lip 3:2 is provided at the top end of the outer box or casing which extends over the inner box at its connection to efl'ectively hide the joint from view.

From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided simple yet eilcctive and strong construction of bracelet which may re ceive ornamentati n to make the same attractive in appearance and which may be easily assembled and the units detached one from the other when desirable.

I claim:

1. An extendible bracelet chain comprising a series of connected units, each unit having an outer box, an inner box slidable relative thereto, connecting member having a laterally extending portion fixedly secured to one of said boxes adjacent one end thereof and slidable relative to the other box, a spring acting between said member and the box slidable relative thereto, and a hook car ried by the last mentioned of said boxes oi one unit for detachably engaging said laterally extending portion of the connecting member of the next unit.

2. An extendible bracelet construction comprising a series of connected units detachably hin 'ed together, each unit comprising an outer casing, an inner box therein slidable relative to said casing, a connecting member slidable relative to said inner box, and having a laterally extending portion fixed to said casing, and a hook on one end of said casing, a connecting member fixed to the" side walls of said casing and extending through aid end Wall intermediate its side Walls, an abutment on said connecting meirber within said box, a spring acting between said abutment and end Wall to house said box in said casing and a hook on said box for 'detachably connecting the box of one unit to the member of the next unit.

l. in an extendible bracelet, a series of connected units each comprising an outer box, an inner box therein,'an I shaped con necting member having heads connected by a shank, means for fixing one of the heads of said member to said outer box, and a spring embracing the shank of said member and enthe opposite head of said member and a portion of the other of said boxes whereby a yielding sliding movement of the boxes is permitted, andrahook on one of said boxes for detachably engaging the head of the member fixed to another of said boxes.

5. In an extendible bracelet, a series of connected units each comprisingan outer box, an inner box therein, an I-shaped connecting member having heads connected by a shank, means for detachably connecting one of the heads to said shank, a spring surrounding said shank and acting between a portion of the inner box and one oi said heads and means for securing the other head to the other of said boxes. 1
