Rasps or files inthe course of time become worn and lose their eectiveness.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved rasp or file having removable and interchangeable teeth, thereby enabling the user to remove any tooth which becomes worn or damaged and to replace any or all of the teeth with others and also permitting the same holder to be employed for teeth of different kinds or sizes.
The invention embodies a backing or holder lips, independent teeth, removably engaged withthe undercut groove or overhanging lips,
and locking means for holding the teeth against displacement.
lDiderent kinds of teeth may be used in Vthe same holder at different times, enabling the tool to be changed from a rasp to a `file or vice-versa.
The contour ofthe teeth may be straight or arcuate or the teeth may extend directly cross-wise, or diagonally, in relation to the f lengthofthe holder.
As shown and described, the holder, which is provided with any suitable handle or tang,
V has a dove-tail groove running lengthwise vit will be understood that other V thereof'but itv will be understood that overhanging lips of any kind may be used in `lieu Vof a dove-tail groove. For convenience and cheapness of manufacture, the groove may extend through the outer end of the holder and said end be permanently closed by a piece or abutment Vpermanently riveted to the backing and at the other end of the holder, a
. v cross-wedge employedto crowd the independent and removable teeth together to tightly hold them in the groove under the lips, but A means may be employed for that'purpose. y lIn the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a plan view ;v y K Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the l holder, the teeth being shown in full lines;
= Figrfis a plan viewof Vthe holder, the
[f wedge vand teeth `being omitted;
, Fig. 4 is a cross section `through the holder, showingak tooth in full lines; and
, F ig. 5 is an end view of a tooth.
- `l "The -holder lis' provided with longitudinally extending lips 2 for engaging the removable teeth'. Preferably, the lips are formed by providing a dove-tail seat 3. For convenience and cheapness of manufacture, the seatfis formed by cutting. inwardly from the outer end ofthe holder; therefore, there is provided an abutment plate or strip 4 which is suitably secured at 5, as by rivets for instance, which closes the outer end of the seat 3.
Extending cross-wise of the inner end of the seat 3, is a tapered cross groove 6 which is adapted to receive a wedge 7 which is driven into said groove 6 for the purpose of holding the removable teeth 8 crowded against the abutment 4 when said teeth have their ends engaged under the lips 2.
The removable teeth may be of any shape desired and their lengths may extend directly cross-wise of the holder or at an inclination thereto. The teeth may have straight crests or cutting edges or they may be arcuate, as with a half round file or rasp. The teeth may be of any degree of fineness or coarseness. Each tooth has a body 9 whose ends fit under the lips 2 and when the seat 3 is of the dovetail form disclosed, these bodies 9 are of dovetail form to fit the seat and project under the lips 2. The teeth have their ends 10 overlying the lips 2 so that the teeth extend the full width of the holder 1.
The tang or handle 11 may be of any desired shape but, as shown, it is offset from the plane of the holder 1 so that it may be readily graspedgwithout danger of the knuck- ,les or fingers of the user coming in Contact vrreached. Obviously, teeth of any inclination,
size, or shape, may be used in the holder 1.
1 removable teeth {whosefbodies 1 are received' What I claim is: 1
A rasp or ile comprising a seat extending lengthwise thereof provided Aat its outer end .with ani attached abutment i and 'at its inner end with a cross groove tapered from one end to its other end and opening out through both sides of the holder,
" in the Seat and which are of lesser width than the cross groove so that their bodies may be a insertedin'said cross groovefor introduction into the seat, or, for removal from said seat,
and a removable wedge driven into said cross groove for holding the bodies of the teeth in the Isaid seat, sai-d wedge having its outerk face lying below the teeth to prevent inter-A ference with the teethwhen the rasp or le is in usev and to prevent injury to the hands Y of the user. l Y Y Intestimony whereof I affixmysignature.
