may be sharpened, and whereby the sharpening may be readily and quickly secured.
Another object is to provide a device for this purpose economical ,in manufacture, and convenient and practical in use.
With these and other objects in view, attention is'called to the accompanying drawings, which are to be considered as part of these specifications, and wherein Figure 1 is a transverse section through another form of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the form shown in Fig. 1 with a blade of the style known as a Gillette secured in place therein for sharpening. Fig. 3 is'a plan view similar to Fig. 2 with a blade of a different style secured in place therein with the cutting edge extending. from the side opposite the Gillette shown in Fig. 2.. Fig. 4 is 'a' face or side view of the form shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 in open position. Fig. 5' is an edge of the opened holder shown in Fig. 4." Fig; 6 is an edge view of the holder shown in Figs.
, 1 to 5 in closed position.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, A represents my improved holder as a whole, made upof the two flat members B and C, the two members B and 0 being hinged together at-theirextremities -1 and 2 by means of the hinge 3 in such manner that they,'the members B and C, may be readily opened and spread apart, as shown, I for the insertion or removal of the razor blade 4. The members B and O bear the longitudinal recesses as shown at 20 and 21,
and the member 0 bears the circular recesses 6, the recess. 20'being of exact sizefand shape to receive the thickened portion f of razor blade, and they recesses 21 and 6 conform .-bein 'of size and shape'to exactly tn t r s n rg as thi kene 'one style p 1 asshownm Fig. 1 Theobject of this is to portions of razor blades. The said studs 5 and the corresponding circular recesses 6 should be so located that the holes found in some makes of safety razor blades will exactly engage said studs 5 and allow the studs 5 to pass through the holes in the safety razor blade, and so as also to secure and hold the blade 4 centrally positioned between the two members B and C with the projecting edge 8 of said blade 4: approximately parallel to the front edge of the members B and C to readily permit and facilitate'the act of sharpening. Likewise, the recesses 20 and 21 are so formed and shaped that said recesses will exactly re-Y ceive and hold the shank of certain other' styles of safety razor blades so that the edge of said blade will likewise be properly positioned in said holder for sharpening. An additional locking stud orpivotal latch 10 is located u on the member B toward the handle of the tool for the purpose of locking the member C in closed relation to the member B with the blade 4 held between them, or any other suitable locking mechanism may be substituted. The outer end of the member B may be equipped with any suitable handle, as 16, for convenience in use.
In actual use itwill be seen that in sharpening the style of'safety razor blade known as the Gillette style, all that is necessary is .;to'spread the members B and 0, set the blade 4 upon the studs .5, close down the member C, and lock the members C and B together by means of the locking stud 10, or where 'it is desired to sharpen the other common form of safety razor blade, that is to say a blade bearing a shank, all that is necessary is to place the shank of said blade within said recess 20, close down the member O upon the member B, and likewise lock the two members together by means of the locking stud 10. The-tool A is then taken in rections from a longitudinal line located and extending near the middle of the members,
make the tool double" acting'in thatthe cutting edge otablade mayproj act from either bearing corresponding holes as shown in side. This be more clearly understood by'jreferring. to Figs. 2 and 3 in which a bladefof the Gillette type is shown in the vrazor blade of one style maybe'supported' on one side of a central longitudinal line" drawn through the members with its ed'ge projecting on one side of the members while? a'razor blade of another type can be sup ported on the opposite side of the central longitudinal line referred-to with its edge projecting on the opposite side of the mem ers.
Although-I have herein described and set forth certainspecific 'mannerand methods of constructing and assembling the several elements of my invention, I reserye the right to modify same in minor ldtails', not departing from the spirit-of-my,in vention, so as best to formmy improvedi'holder to meet all practical demands. 7
As shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 with the studs 5 and the corresponding circular recesses 6 located toward one edge of'the holder A for the purpose of holding and sharpening styles of safety razor blades Fig. 2, and with the longitudinal recesses 20 and 21 located toward the opposite edge of the tool for the purpose of receiving and holding the shank style of safety razor blade as shown in Fig. 3, the edges of said blade being turned. toward and projecting from one side or the other for the purpose of sharpening.
\Vhat I claim to be new'and patentable is: In a holder for safety razor blades, the
combination of a rectangular holding memthereon will project beyond one side edge of the' holding' member and said holding member being also provided with a longitudinal recess located on the opposite side of a, central line drawn through the holding member, to receive a thickened portion of another styleof razor blade and to hold said blade with its cutting edge projecting be- ,yond the opposite side edge of the holding member, a handle extending from one end Qf "tl1 holding member, a second holding -Inmber similar in size and form to the first ymentioned member, said second holding member being adapted to be folded upon the first member to clamp a safety blade in interposed position, and being provided with circular recesses to receive the studs of the first member, and a longitudinal recess corresponding to and adapted to register with the longitudinal recess of the first member, a hinge connecting the outer ends of the two holding members, and a pivotal latch attached to the handle and adapted to be turned to lock the two members in clamping position.
