Description

June 3, 1930. F. REUTTER HOLDER FOR SOAP STICKS AND THE LIKE Filed Feb. 13, 1928 m a a n i 5 W65 1 A M w w 9 Patented June 3, 1930 UNETT:
ATENT orricE FACTURING CCIYIPANY, OF WATEE'BURY,
NECTICUT CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CON- I-IOLDER FOB SOAP STICK AND THE LIKE Application filed February 13, 1928. Serial No. 253,830.
This invention relates to certain improve ments in holders for sticks of shaving soap and the like.
It is the especial object of the present inven- 6 tion to provide a holder for shaving sticks or like toilet preparations in stick form, in which there is provided a base, an independent stick holding cup, and a cover, the parts being of simple form so that they can be eco- 10 nomically produced, and in which the stick holding cup is sectionally formed with interstices between the sections so that a knife or similar toolmay be inserted to remove the soap stub.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a soap holding cup having sectional walls which are resilient and provided with means for frictionally engaging the soap stick.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a construction in which the base is provided with a flanged opening with which engages a projection or boss on the stick holding cup, so that the cup may be readily removed from the base when desired for refilling and so that the cup will be centered and held firmly while in use.
l Vith these and other objects not specifically referred to in view, the invention consists in certain parts, arrangements, and combinations which will be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, which show a preferred form of the invention, and the novel features pointed out in the claims '55 hereunto annexed.
In these drawings,
Figure 1 is aplan view, partly broken away and partly in section, of the improved soap stick holder, and
Figure 2 is a central vertical section taken on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Referring now to these drawings, the improved holder will include but three parts, which parts are preferably arranged, for economy in manufacture, to have frictional engagement, thus eliminating the use of screw threads. As illustrated, these parts include a base 1, a stick holding cup or spider 2, and an outer casing or cover 3, the soap stick 0 being indicated by the numeral 4. Referring now to these parts in detail, it may be here stated that they are made of any suitable material, such as light metal, and of any convenient size for holding a soap stick, the parts in the particular holder illustrated being circular in cross-section. The base 1 is provided with a vertical side Wall which is inset to form a shoulder 5 and a vertical portion extending above the shoulder marked 6, with which, in the construction illustrated, the end of the cover has a frictional engagement, the cover seating against the shoulder 5.
Above the part 6, the wall is further inset, as indicated at 7, for a purpose hereinafter referred to. The bottom of the base is provided with a central aperture marked 8, which is surrounded by a central flange 9, this flange being conveniently formed, as by anturning the metal of the bottom wall of the ase.
Seated within this base is a cup or spider arranged to hold the soap stick 4. This cup or spider is of smaller diameter than the base, so that the soap stick is held away from the walls of the cover, as clearly shown in Figure 2. This cup or spider 2 may be formed in various ways. In the best constructions, however, the spider is provided with resilient walls, shown as formed by slitting the Walls vertically to provide holding tongues marked 10, six of these tongues being shown in the particular construction illustrated. This slitting operation leaves between the tongues slots 11, which extend downwardly nearly to the bottom of the cup. By inserting a knife or similar tool in these slots, the stub of the soap stick may be readily removed from the cup. These tongueshave frictional engagementwith the part 7 of the wall ofthe base, such frictional engagement tending to hold the cup in the base, but at the same time permitting its ready removal therefrom. If desired, additional holding means, such as nibs 12, may be provided for frictionally engaging the part 6 of the wall of the base,
these nibs', however, not interfering with'the removal of the cup from the base.
In the best constructions, the spring tongues of the cup will be provided with means which frictionally engage the end of a soap stick positioned in the cup, these means, however, being of such character as to permit the ready removal of the stub from the cup. As shown, the tongues, near their upper end, are provided with a shallow depression or bead 13 extending inwardly so as to frictiona-lly grip the stick without actually entering the soap, so that ready removal of the soap stick from the cup is permitted In the best constructions, the cup or spider, irrespective of its particular form, is provided with means whereby it is held steady in the base during use. While this may be accomplished in various ways,a convenient one is that shown, in which the bottom of the cup is formed with a boss or projection 1d of smaller diameter than the cup, this boss fitting into the flange 9 in the base and engaging the inturn ed walls of the flange. This construction centers the cup and at the same 7 time holds the cup in position during use.
It will be observed that access to the bottom of the cup may be had through the hole 8 in the base and, by pressing against the cup, the cup may be readily removed from the base, thus exposing the slots 11, by the use of which the soap stub can be removed ,from the cup and a new soap stick inserted therein. It Wlll be further observed that ii des1red, owing to the soap stick cup or spider being. made separate from the base, the exposed end of this holder may be decorated with paint or enamel, or in any other de-- sired way independently of the base, so that a decorative effect may be produced in a cheap and economical way. It will be further observed that with the construction described avery cheap, economical and at the same time efiicient holder has been provided, one in which the parts may be readily formed and easily and quickly assembled for use.
l/Vhile the invention has been shown and described in its preferred form, it will be understood that variouschanges may be made in the specific construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a holder for shaving soap sticks and the like, the combination of a base, a shoulder on the base and a wall inset from the shoulder, a central flange in the bottom of the base, a soap holding cup having acentral raised portion fitting in the flange and having frictional engagement with the wall of the base, and a cover having frictional engagement with the base wall and seating on the shoulder.
2. In a holder for shaving soap sticks and the like, the combination of a base, a shoulder on the base and a wall inset from the shoulder, an Opening in the base surrounded by an inwardly extending flange, a soap holding cup having a boss fitting within the flange and in frictional engagement with the wall of the base, said cup being slitted vertically to form spring tongues, means on the tongues frictionally holding a soap stick in the cup by simply pressing the cup in the base, and a cover having frictional engagement with the base wall and seating on the shoulder.
3. In a holder for shaving soap sticks and the like, the combination of a base, a central flange in the bottom of the base, a soap holding cup having a boss fitting in the flange, the" walls of the cup being slitted vertically to form spring tongues, inwardly extending longitudinal beads on the tongues frictionally holding a soap stick in the cup by simply pressing the cup in the base, and a cover engaging the base.
i. In a holder for shaving soap sticks and the like, the combination of a base, an opening in the base surrounded by a central flange, a soap holding cup having a boss fitting the flange, the walls of the cup being resilient and provided with integral inwardly projecting means frictionally engaging a soap stick held in the cup, and a cover engaging the base.
5. In a holder for shaving soap sticks and the like, the combination of a base, an opening in the base surrounded by a central flange, a soap holding cup having a raised portion fitting within the flange, resilient tongues formed by slitting the walls of the cup, inwardly extending integral beads on the tongues frictionally engaging a soap stick, means on the tongues frictionally engaging the walls of the base, and a cover frictionally engaging the base.
6. In a holder for shaving soap sticks and the like, the combination of a base, a soap holding cup in the base, spring tongues formed by slitting the walls of the cup, horizontal inwardly turned beads on the tongues frictionally engaging a soap stick by simply pressing the cup in the base, outwardly projecting nibs on the tongues frictionally engaging the inner wall of the base and a cover frictionally engaging the outer wall of the base.
