This invention relates to lamp fittings. More particularly it relates to an adapter for an electric lamp and ornamental globe.
Among the objects of this invention is to provide a unitary ruggedv and compact device of the character described which shall contain few and simple parts, which shall be cheap of manufacture, and yet practical and eificient to a high degree in use.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists inthe features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

Referring in detail to the drawings designates an adapter embodying the invention provided with means for mounting a lamp 11 and ornamental globe 12.
Said adapter 10 comprises a body member 13 made of molded insulating material such as porcelain, or phenol condensate products and formed with a central aperture 14. Said member 13 is provided with an upstanding cylindrical flan e 15 adjacent said central aperture 14, and with a depending reduced cylindrical portion 16.
Means is provided for connecting the lamp 11 to an electric power supply. To this end a unitary metalhc shell 17 having a screw socket portion 18 is firmly secured to said member 13 within the aperture l i thereof. The lower portion 19 of said member 17 is formed with a screw threaded portion 19 constituting a plug for attachment to any ordinary screw shell socket (not shown) connected to a suitable electric power source. A core 20 of insulating material is firmly secured within the plug portion 19 for strengthening the same. Centrally disposed within said core 20 is a metallic pin 21 provided at its lower end with a head 22 forming a central contact for said plug portion 19. At its upper end, said pin 21 is formed with a head 23 protruding from said core 20 and constituting a central contact for the socket 18. Said socket 18 is adapted to receive the lamp base 24 of said lamp 11.
For removably mounting the globe 12 on said adapter 10, the body member 13 is formed with a flat annular, outwardly extending flange portion 25, and with a downwardly stepped outer peripheral ledge portion 26 which forms a seat for the collar portion 27 of the globe 12. Said collar 27 may comprise a circular metallic member 28 of U-shaped cross-section for receiving the mouth portion 29 of the globe. The seat 26 properly centers the globe 12 since a portion of the inner surface 30 of the member 28 contacts the cylindrical wall 31 connecting said ledge 26 with said annular portion 25.
A pair of diametrically disposed plate springs 35 secured to member 13 are provided for retaining the globe 12 in seated position on said adapter. Said springs 35 are each provided with a flat end portion 36 contacting the upper surface of said annular portion 25 secured thereto by rivets 37 or in any other suitable manner. The springs 35 are further provided with upwardly bent extensions 38 and outwardly bent portions 39 adapted to frictionally engage and press against the inner edge surface 40 of the collar 27 for retaining the globe attached to said ada ter.
It will now be apparent that t e globe 12 may be easily attached to the adapter, the springs 35 yielding to permit the attachment and snapping over said edge 40 into retaining position. The globe ma also be easily removed from the adapter, the springs likewise yielding to permit such removal.
The globe 12 is preferably made of celluloid or other translucent non-breakable material, and may be ornamented in any desired manner as for illustration by a; star 41 formed in the walls thereof. Obviously, any globe may be employed having a reduced mouth portion of proper size for cooperating with the adapter. For the purpose of illustration only, a tapered lamp 11 such as is used for Christmas tree light-ing outfits is shown in the drawings. However, any suitable lamp having a screw threaded base for cooperation with socket 18 may obviously be used.
The insulating body 13 is provided with a number of spaced vertical bores 43 to provide air holes for ensuring a circulating of air in the globe, and thus prevent overheating thereof.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. An adapter comprising an insulating body formed with a central opening and an outwardly extending flange having a peripheral downwardly stepped ledge forming a seat, a lamp base receiving portion and 'a quick detachable plug attachment portion for connecting a lamp to an electric power supply mounted within said opening, and spring friction means for removably attaching a globe for said lamp to said adapter and retaining the mouth of said globe on said seat.
2. An adapter comprising an annular insulating body, lamp base receiving means and plug attachment means mounted within said insulating body, said body being formed with a seat portion for receiving a portion of a globe, and resilient means associated with said body for frictionally retaining said globe in seated condition. y
3. An adapter comprising an annular insulating body, lamp base receiving means and plug attachment means mounted withinsaid body, said body being provided with a seat for receiving a portion of a globe, and a plurality of springs fixed to said body adapted to engage a portion of the inner surface of said globe for frictionally and detachably retaining said globe in seated condition.
4. In an ornamental lighting unit of the character described, in combination, an adapter comprising a molded insulating body portion and lamp base receiving means and plug attachment means mounted within said body, a lamp attached to said receiving means and a globe for said lamp, resilient means fixed to said adapter for retaining said globe in mounted position on said adapter said body having air openings communicating with the interior of said globe for preventing overheating thereof.
5. In an ornamental lighting unit of the character described, in combination, an adapter comprising a molded insulating body portion and lamp base receiving means and plug attachment means mounted within said body, a lamp attached to said receivin means, and a globe for said lamp mounte on said adapter, said body having air openings communicatin with the interior of said globe for preventmg overheating thereof, and being provided with a flat annular portion formed with a ledge constituting centering and seating means for said globe.
6. In an ornamental lighting unit of-the character described, in combination, an adapter comprising a molded insulating body portion comprising an outwardly extending flange and lamp base receiving means and plug attachment means mounted within said body, a lamp attached to said receiving means and a globe for said lamp, said body having air openings communicating with the interior of said globe for preventing overheating thereof, means on said flange for centering and seating said lobe, and spring friction means for detacha ly mounting said globe on said adapter.
