Description

UNITED STATES FRANCIS s. xnvNEY,
OF NE\V YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOXES FOR PACKING AND SHOWING GOODS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,827, dated May 4, 1875; application filed April 3, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS S. KINNEY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Box for Packing and Showing Groods,'otl which the following is a specification:
Figure lis a vertical longitudinal section of my improved box, shown as closed for storage and transportation, and showing in dotted lines the position ot' the goods when packed. Fig. 2 is the same section as Fig. 1, but showing the covers removed and the box arranged for showing the goods.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object ot' this invention is to furnish an improved box for packing cigarettes, perfumery, and other goods for storage and transportation, which shall be so `constructed that the goods can be displayed to advantage in show-cases, show-windows, and other places without removing them from the box.
The invention consists of a box of rhomboidal shape, made withthe upper part of its lower end cut away, and provided with a terraced or step false bottom and hinged flaps or ialse ends, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the body ot' the box, which is made lozenge-shaped, or, more strictly, rhomboidal-shaped, as shown in Figs. l and 2. The
forward or lower end is made low, or has its` upper partout away. The box A is provided with a false bottom, B, which is scored and l bent at right angles, to form a series of terraces or steps for the goods to stand upon.
The boxA is provided with two flaps or false ends, C D, which are hinged at their edges to the ends of the bottom of said box, and which, when the box is closed, are turned up along the ends of the body A, and are confined in place by the cover E.
When the goods are to be displayed the cover E is removed and laid aside, the Hap C, at the forward end, is turned down into a horizontal position, and the Hap D, at the rear end of the box, is turned down into a vertical position, to support the rear end of the box raised, as shownn Fig.2, so that the upper ends of the goods oi' each upper tier may sho w above the goods of the lowerl tiers, and the forward side of the goods of the lowest tier may be fully seen through the open lower end ot' the box.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent The rhomboidalshaped box A, made with the upper part of its lower end cut away, and provided with a terraced or step false bottom, B, and hinged iiaps or false ends C D, substantially as herein shown and described.
FRANCIS S. KINNEY.
