IMPROVEMENT IN SECTIONAL BUCKETS FOR PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,812, dated March 16, 1875; application filed February 5, 1875.

A is the barrel or tube of the pump. B is the plunger-rod of the pump. 0 is the cup on the end of this rod, which is grooved to receive the section of the bucket or plunger, as seen in Fig. 1. D is the bucket, formed of four (more or less) sections, E. These sections rest in the cup 0. F is a broad collar on the rod B, which collar forms the bottom of the bucket, the sections closing tightly around it. The buckets are made to lap onto each other on the inside, as seen at G, so as to break the joints. The bucket is brought to an edge at the top, and when raising water it expands against the barrel and remains tight. When it is descending it is empty, and collapses to a certain degree, and descends without friction against the barrel. The bucle' et may be made of any desired size, so as to hold more or less water. It israised entirely from the bottom of the rod, and, being subject to no friction, the bucket is durable and not easily deranged or got out of order.
It is made entirely of wood, but it may be made of any suitable material.
These buckets may be used for all the purposes for which they are adapted, and they may be constructed in any similar manner.
Havingthus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A pump-bucket composed of sections arranged to expand to the barrel by the weight of water raised, and contract in descending, substantially as shown and described.
2. A sectional pump-bucket having the sec tions lap onto each other, substantially as seen at G, for the purposes described.
3. The cup or grooved flange O on the rod B, substantially as shown and described.
