WALL OR DAM CONSTRUCTION.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES F. FRAN- oIsco, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l/Vall or Dam Constructions, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to walls or dams composed of annular rows of piles in connection with a plurality of segment shaped collar beams, and more particularly to those of reinforced concrete material, and the objects, are, first, to provide walls or dams of simple, economical, safe, substantial and durable construction, second, to provide a oonstruction that may be built of reinforced concrete material and may be made absolutely tight, and the parts of which may be made at any desirable place and afterward be assembled at the place of construction, third, to provide means for substantially holding the collar beams together and in place wit-hout the use of piles, after which the piles may be driven if desired.
With these and other objects in view as will appear, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this specification, in which Figure l is an elevational view of one of my walls constructed showing a part broken away, Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, Fig. 3 is a top view of one of my collar beams shown in segmental form, Fig. 4L is a side view thereof shown in connection with other similar collar beams, and with a pile, Fig. 5 is a top view, showing the collar beam in its straight form, to be used where it is desired to build walls other than those of an annular form, Fig. 6 is a plan view showing a plurality of these annular shaped walls, and their connecting collar beams, to be used for a dam construction, and Fig. 7 is a perspective and partially sectional view of one of said connecting collar beams.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, numeral 1 represents the collar beam in its segmental form, 2 represents the collar beam in its straight form. These collar beams are provided with under- Speccation of Letters Patent.

cut grooves 1al and 2a, in their top land bottom surfaces adapted to be filled with concrete or other suitable material to close the joints between the two sections. It will be noted that by reason of the under-cut grooves, the parts of the wall will be securely locked together. On each of said collar beams is provided collars lb and 1"'. The collar 1b is on the lower side of the beam and extends to the middle of the beam while the collar lC is on the upper side of the beam and also extends to the middle of it. These collars are provided with nipplesd 3 which eX- tend into the collar one-half its depth, and protrude from the collar the same distance. They are preferably made of steel and perforated, but may be made of concrete or other suitable material, and set into the collar beams. They are provided with a flange 3a adapted to set into the collar beams as shown best in Fig. 4. These collar beams are reinforced by means of longitudinal and vertical reinforcement bars lf and 1g. At the joints between the ends of the collar beams, when it is desired to make the joints tight, there is provided under-cut grooves t on the collar beams, as shown best in Fig. 2, which said grooves are later lled with concrete or other suitable material. In the annular construction these collar beams are placed with the collar l over the nipple in collar lb, thus forming the annular shape as shown best in Fig. 2, after which, if it is desired to provide a strong construction, piles are driven into the earth through the holes left in the nipples as shown best in Fig. 4, or they are placed in said holes without driving. It will be readily seen that this provides a substantial wall construction, and with the nipples, provide a means for holding the collar beams in position until a suficient height is reached to guide the pile straight while being driven.
In the dam construction there is used a plurality of these annular walls supported by piles driven into the earth. These walls are spaced apart as shown in Fig. 6, after which collar beams 5 constructed similarly to those shown in Fig. 4, except, that the collar extends the full width of the beam, and the groove 5fL is placed centrally therein as shown best in Fig. 7 are placed against the two opposite collars in the annular walls as shown in Fig. 6, one upon the other and piles are then driven through the holes in said collar beams into the earth. It will be readily seen that this will provide a. good and substantial dam construction. The inner surface of these annular walls, and the space between these walls may be filled with suitable material to facilitate their retarding effect.
Though l have shown and described a particular wall and dam construction, I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, nor specifically to the form and construction of the parts, but desire to include in my invention substantially the principles involved, and the construction and arrangement of parts as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l, A wall or dam construction comprising, a plurality of collar beams provided with a collar on each end, and a nipple mounted in each cellar adapted for other collar beams, all substantially set forth.
Q. A wall or dam construction, comprising a plurality of reinforced concrete collar beams provided with a collar on each end, and a nipple mounted in each collar adapted for other collar beams, all substantially as set forth.
3. A wall or dam construction, comprising a plu ality of reinforced concrete collar beams provided with a. collar on each end, a groove in their top and bottom surfaces, a nipple mounted in each collar adapted for other collar beams, and a plurality of piles adapted to fit said nipples, all substantially as set forth.
t. A wall or dam construction comprising a plurality of collar bea-ins, a plurality of nipples set into the collars in said collar beams and extending from the same, said collar beams to be connected together at their ends and placed one above the other, all substantially as set forth.
5. A wall or dam construction comprising` a plurality of reinforced collar beams provided with a collar on each end, and an under-cut groove in their bottom surfaces, a plurality of nipples set into the collars in said collar beams, and extending from the f same, said collar beams to be connected together at their ends and forming a circle and placed one above the other, and piles adapted to fit into said nipples and to be driven into the earth, all substantially as set forth.
6. In a dam construction, a plurality of annular walls, comprising a plurality of piles set in annular rows, a plurality of segment shaped collar beams provided with nipples placed over said piles, and a plurality of segment shaped collar beams pro vided with a nipple in each end, fitted between and against said annular walls, and supported by piles driven into the earth, all substantially as set forth.
7. In a dam construction, a plurality of annular walls, comprising` a plurality of piles set in annular rows, a plurality of segment shaped collar beams provided with nipples placed over said piles, and a plurality of segment shaped collar beams provided with a nipple in each end, and grooves in their upper and lower surfaces, fitted between and against said annular walls, all substantially as set forth.
