Description

" A. JONES VALVE SPRING COMPRESSOR Filed April 6, 1928' Alvin, j n as INVENTOR ATTORNEY WITNESS:
Patented Dec. 18, 1928.
UNITED STATES ALVIN JONES, or roar BENTON, MONTANA.
VALVE-seams COMPRESSOR.
Application filed April 6,
This invention relates to spring compressors and its general object is to provide a spring compressor and holding device for use in removing and replacing valves of the poppet type in internal combustion motors in an easy and expeditious manner with very little effort.
A further object of the invention is to provide a valve spring compressor oi the character set forth that is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and ei'licient in operation and service.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the co1nbination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims. a
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is side elevation of the device forming the subject matter of the. present invention, and showing the same in operative position.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view partly in section and showing one size of spring tool secured in the device.
Figure 3 is a detail view of a spring tool having a shank that is shorter than the shank of the spring tool shown in Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the letter A indicates the top of a work bench to which the device is to be secured as clearly shown in Figure 1. The device includes a body having a base 1 provided with openings to accommodate bolts 2 whereby the device is secured to the bench, and rising from the base 1 is an upright 3 disposed at an inclination and has formed therewith a web 4 which is likewise formed with said base as shown. Extending laterally from the web 4 adjacent its upper end is an extension 5 which terminates at its outer end in a bearing sleeve 6. Disposed in parallelism with the extension 5 and formed with the upper end of the web 4 is a fork 7 pivotally receiving one end of a handle 8 through the medium of a pivot pin 9. The handle has formed on its upper surface a plurality of teeth 10 for a purpose which will be presently apparent. Depending from'the handle and disposed ad- 1928. Serial No. 287,335.
bearing sleeve and has provided in its lower end a bore 14 for the purpose'o f receiving the shanks 15 of spring tools 16; 1
The shanks 15 of the spring tools 16 are swiveled to the bight portions thereofand it will be noted that these spring tools are substantially U-shape in formation tor the purpose of engagingthe valve stem' cup upon diametrically opposite sides thereof in the operation of the tool as shown'in Figure 1 which illustrates the tool in use, and it will be obvious that when the valve spring is compressed so as to relieve the pressure of the cup against the pin or washer-"which is secured to the stem, the pin or washer can be removed with very little efiort so that the valve can be likewise removed. .01:- course the parts are to be replaced when the spring is compressed and in order to hold the spring in compressed position, Iprovide a latch arm 17 which has one end pivotally secured while its opposite end is engageable in one of the teeth of the handle as shown,
From the above description and disclosure of the drawings, it will be obvious that I have provided a spring compressing devicethat is capable for use in removing and replacing valves in internal combustion motors, and the head. of the motor can be disposed 011 the bench A and the device put in operation as above described. By employing the use of valve tools having various lengths of shanks, various types of motors can be operated upon and these shanks are held in the bore of the plunger rod through the instrumentality of a set screw 18 as clearly shown in Figure 2.
It is thought from the foregoing descrip- I tion that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood. that I may make changesin the construction and in the combination and arrangement-of the several parts, provided that such changesfall within the scope of the appended claims- What I claim is 1. A springflcompressor of the character described comprising a base, an upright formed with said base, a web formed with said base and upright respectively, an exten- SlOIl formed with sald web, a bearing sleeve on said extension, a plunger mounted for movement in said bearing sleeve and being provided with a bore, a handle having pivotal connection with said web and with said plunger respectively, a substantially U- shaped member providing a spring tool, and a shank formed with said U-shaped member and being detachably secured in the bore of said plunger.
2. A spring compressor of the character described comprising a base, an upright formed with said base, a web formed with said upright, an extension projecting from said web adjacent the upper end thereof, a bearing sleeve formed with said extension, a plunger mounted for movement through said bearing sleeve and having a longitudinal bore formed in its lower end portion, a toothed handle having pivotal connection with said web and plunger respectively, a spring tool of U-shaped formation and includingashank, means for detachably securing the shank in the bore, and a latch arm cooperating with said teeth for the purpose specified.
3. A spring compressor of the character described comprising a base, means for securing said base to abench an upright formed with said base, a web formed with said upright and base respectively, a bearing sleeve having connection with said web, a fork formed with said web and disposed above said bearing sleeve, a handle having one end pivotally secured in said fork, a plunger mounted for movement in said bearing sleeve, a link pivotally connecting the handle with said plunger, a'U-shaped spring tool, a shank swiveled to said tool and being detachably secured to said plunger, and a latch arm pivotally secured to said upright and cooperating with teeth formed in the handle.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ALVIN JONES.
