VALVE-SPRING LIFTER.
Application filed December 23, 1922. Serial No. 608,739.
To all whom it may concern,
Be it known that I, PAUL S. GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winters, in the county of Runnels and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Valve-Spring Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools for use in repairing automobile engines and has for its object the provision of a novel device for compressing thevalve spring to permit re moval of the retaining pin thereof so that the spring may be subsequently removed to permit removal of the valve.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which is provided with novel leverage means whereby the max imum power may be applied for exerting the compressing action with very little effort.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, ef-
ficient and durable in use, positive in action and a general improvement in the art.
lVith the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which: I

Referring more particularly to the drawings the letter A designates a portion of an engine having a valve seat B normally closed by a valve C carried by a stem D slidable through the usual guide. The stem is surrounded by a spring E which abuts against a washer F normally engaging a pin G.
In carrying out my invention I provide a lifter which comprises a reflexly curved member 10 having one end extended as; shown at 11 and formed with a hole 12 through which is slidable a stem 13 carrying a disk 14 adapted to be seated upon the top of the valve. This bar is U-shaped in cross section as shown and might in actual practice be formed of sheet metal cut and bent to shape. This bar is substantially U- shaped in side elevation and has one leg 15 leg 15 of the bar 10 and is held in adjusted position by means of one ormore pins passing through both bars, the reason for the adjustment being to vary the position between the extension 12 and end 18 depending-upon the particular motor to be worked on.
The numeral 21 designates a lever which is likewise "U-shaped in cross section and which is pivoted at- 22 upon the bight of the bar 10 and which has its free end pivotally connected as shown at 23 with the free end of the stem 13. Pivoted at 24 upon the bar 17 and straddling this bar and the long leg 15 of the bar 10 is a lever 25 which may be formed of sheet metal and which is U-shaped in cross section as shown. Pivotally connected with the lever 25 near the free end thereof, as shown at 26, is a link 27 which is in turn pivotally connected at 28 with the free end of the lever 21.
In the operation of the device it will be seen that the bars 10 and 17 are connected at such a point that the extension 11 may be disposed above the valve with the end 18 of the bar 17 disposed below the lower end of the stem D. The operator then grasps the lever 25 and the engaging portions of the leg 15 and bar 17 and presses these two elements together. When this is done the lever 25 will rock upon the pivot 24 and the link 27 will operate to rock the lever 21 upon its pivot 22 which will result in forcing the disk 14 into firm engagement with the valve while at the same time the flattened forked end of the bar 17 will engage the spring washer F and move it forwardly so as to compress the spring E which will then permit the removal of the pin G so that the valve may be subsequently pulled out. In effecting replacement the reverse operation is carried out and it is to be observed that the action is very simple and will require very little time so that the use of the device should be highly advantageous to mechanics and others having occasion to remove the valves for the purpose of grinding the same or making repairs or adjustments.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form,

2, A tool of the character described coniprisingva U-shapedbar having legs of unequal length, the shorter leg being formed with a lateral extension having a hole therein, a stem slidable through said hole and carrying a disk disposable upon the valve to be lifted, the longer leg of said bar being formed with a plurality of holes, a second bar of L-shape having one end formed with a fork disposable upon the stem of the valve in engagement with the valve spring retaining washer, the other arm of said L-shaped bar being disposed against the longer leg of said first named bar and being formed with holes adapted to register selectively with certain of the holes therein, a lever pivoted upon the bight portion of said first named bar and pivotally connected with the free end of said stem, a lever pivoted at the lower end of the longer leg of the first named bar, and a link pivotally conneeted with the free end of said last named lever and the other end of said first named lever.
