The bifurcation 16 does not extend throughout the length of the, spindle but leads into a bore '22 through the lower end thereof. Slidable through the bore 22 is a rod 23 which has its upper end provided with a transverse pin 24 which engages within the grooves 21 for preventing rotation of the rod. The upper end of this rod is engageable bythe cam 18 whereby the rod may be moved downwardly, as will .be hereinafter explained. The lower end of the rod 23 is split to define laterally extending arms 25 which carry depending pins 26 engageable within the holes commonly provided in valves of this character. I
The operation of the device is as follows: The operator engages the forked foot 12 below the spring washer D and places the device so that the pins 26 are engaged within the holes in the valve. He then grasps the handle 20 of the cam and swings itdownwardly whereupon the engagement of the cam with the upper end of the rod 23 will move the rod downwardly resulting in compression of the valve spring (1. When the rod 23 is forced downwardly the notch 19 will engage with the upper end of the rod, -which is beveled to form a catch 27 whereupon the parts will be held in this position with the valve spring compressed. The operator then may grasp the handle 20 and rotate the spindle '14 together with the rod 23 in either direction and this will result in partial rotation of the valve A so that the I valve spring retaining pin E may be brou ht structed and easily applied and operated;
