Description

Aug. 2l, 1928.
C. N. PETERSON CONTAINER CAP MEANS Filed May ze, 1924 Snowdon Patented l Aug. 21, 1928.
UNITED STATES CONTAINER-CAP MEANS.
` Application inea May 2e, 1924. serial No. 715,934.
My invention relates todevicesv adapted to form closures for metal. cases or the like and has for its objects: first, to provide a re shown in section to more clearly show its eneral arrangement and construction. lligure 3 shows a section on line 3--3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows a section on line 4 l of Fig. 2. n
A receptacle l, a cover 2, and a hinge bar 3, form the principal parts of this device,
In the device as illustrated on the drawing and more particularly referring to Fig. 2, a metal receptacle l is provided with a throatlike extension la, having formed near its extremity an outwardly projecting ridge 1b and a tapered end 1, over which a cover o 2 is adapted to be seated and held in place by the hinge bar 3 and by the clasp 2a. The cover 2 is provided with Aa hinge lip 2b adapted to swivel on the hinge pin 2c and between the forked ends 3a of the hinge bar 3.
The hinge bar 3 is pivotally hinged to the throat extension 1a of the receptacle l by a lug 1d entering holes {3b-provided in said hinge bar 3.
A mole or protuberance le is formed at each side of the throat extension la of the lreceptacle l near the upper end of said throat extension la, for the purpose of providing a resistance against the free swinging of the hinge bar 3 on the pivot lugs ld. The r upper end of the hinge bar 3 surmounts the upper end of one half of the throat extenon the hinge pin 2C. As in many cases itis PATENT OFFICE.
desir'edto entirely free the throat extension i l of the cover 2, a slight pressure in a downward direction on the cover 2 when same has been swinging away from the throat extension l, as shown in the upper dotted position thereof, will swing the hinge bar 3 with the cover int-o the lower dotted position thus clearing the throat extension 1a entirely from anyv incumbrance.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is:
l. In a container cover means, a receptacle having a throat-like extension provided with a ridge and an inwardly tapered end formed on the upper end of the said throatlike extension, a bar pivotally mounted near the lower end of the said throat-like extension and a considerable distance from and below said ridge and a cover hinged on said bar adapted to fit on said ridge and inwardly tapered end.
2. In a container cover means, areceptacle having a reduced, straight, throat-like extension and provided with a ridge and an inwardly tapered end formed on the upper end of the said throat-like extension, a bar pivotally mounted at its opposite ends near the lower end of the said throat-like extension and a cover hinged on said bar at its middle portion intermediate'its ends and adapted` to fit on said ridge and inwardly tapered end.
3. In a container cover means, a receptacle having an opening, a cover supporting bar means pivotally mounted at the opposite kouter sides of thereceptacle and shiitable,
when covering the opening of the receptacle, with one end adjacent the opening, anda cover pivotally mounted on said bar means adapted to cover said opening, said bar means being also shiftable with said cover a considerable distance from said opening.
4. In a container cover means, a receptacle having an opening, a cover supporting bar pivotally mounted at the outer side of the receptacle and shiftable with one end adjacent the opening, means'in connection with the receptacle .andsaid bar for detachably holding the latter with its one end adjacent said opening, and a cover pivotally mounted on said bar adapted to cover said opening.
5. In a container cover means, a receptacle having an opening, a cover supporting bar pivotally mounted at the outer side of the receptacle ,shiftable with one end adju; cent the openingJ means in,kcon `1,1e' c`-,`triofnwithV the receptacle and said har for detaolrably holding the latter with, itsone end adjacent said opening, a cover pvotally mounted on said bar adapted to cover said opening, and means on said cover for :fastening the Shine in a closed position over seid opening, l
6. In a container cover ineens, a receptacle having auredueed )throat openI at i'tS gend,-
niountedt theien'ds' of it legs, toY grndnt adapted ,tok extend with its cross portion ade n its orossvportion free :ind clellof Said throat,
andarcover pivotally mounted at one side tothe cross portion of said bar ind adapted to cover said' opening when the cross portion of said bar is positioned adjcent Suid opening.
Inptestiinony whereof, I havehereun'to Set lmy hand at SanfDiego, California, this 17th day of May, 1924;.k
