Be it known that I, FRANK R. WATSON, a citizen of the, United States, residing at Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented .certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Covers, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lids for closing the openings in stove tops,
and its object is to provide the lid with an opening for insertion of the lifter whereby the lid is removed from the stove top, said lid opening being provided with a novel and improved closure as will be described in detail hereinafter.
In order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in said drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lid;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of a fragment of the lid, and Figs. 3 and 4 are sections on the line 33 and 44, respectively of Fig. 2.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes a stove lid having a rabbetted edge to fit in the opening of the stove top, the latter not being shown as the manner in which the lid is used is well'known. In order that a lifting tool may be readily applied to the lid for the purpose of removingthe same from the stove top, or for replacing the same, the lid is provided with an opening 6 extending completely through the same from the top to the bottom. The lifter is shown dotted at 7. This lid opening is pro, vided with a closure 8 which, when the lifter is not applied, completely closes the opening, and comes flush with the top of the lid. One end of the closure is counterweighted, as shown at 9, so that the closure hasa normal tendency to swing to closing position and stay closed. The thickened portion of the closure forming its counter-v pivot pin 12, whereby the closure is pivotallyconnected to the lid, so that it may be swung open and closed.

The forward edge of the closure 9 is beveled and the contiguous edge of the opening 6 is correspondingly beveled, as shown in Fig. These bevels are in a direction to permit the forward portionof the closure to swing downward only. i The rear edge of the closure, where it is counterweighted, is also beveled, with thecontiguous edge of the'opening 6 correspondingly beveled, as
pivotal connection, are beveled in the same manner as the forward edge of the closure. By beveling the edges of the closure in the manner described, it seats normally flush with the top of the lid 5, and swings back to this position when the lifter 7 is removed.
The lifter 7 is applied to the lid 5 by inserting its outer endinto the opening 6 to come beneath the same as shown in Fig. 3, this being done by pressing the lifter down on the forward end of the closure 9 to swing said end down as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, the opposite, or rear end swinging upward. When the lifter is removed, the
closure swings back to its normal closing position. It will be noted in Figs. 1 and 3,
that the lifter has sidelugs 13 adjacent to its working end, which lugs engage the top of the lid to serve as a fulcrum for the lifter. Where the lifter is not provided with these side lugs, some provision must be made to obtain a fulcrum support for the lifter. This 'canbe done by forming theears 11 with outstanding stop lugs 14, located beneaththe closure 9. in the path thereof, and thus serving to limit its downward swing, as shown in Fig. 3. The closure can swing open'only far enough for the insertion of'the lifter, a
further swing being prevented by the lugs 14. Hence,the closure serves as a fulcrum support 01' abutment for the lifter, to prevent the same from slipping from holding position as the lid is being lifted.
The device is very simple and inexpensive, it is adapted for all types or styles of stove lid lifters, and it therefore effectually serves the purpose for which it is designed.
