Description

1,641,849 Sept 6 1927' R. HADLEY SMOKING PIPE Filed Nov. 11, 1925 WITNESS:
Patented Sept. 6, 1927.
PATENT OFFICE.
RAYMOND HADLEY, 0F FAIRFIELD, CONNECTICUT.
SMOKING PIPE.
Application filed November 11, 1925. Serial No. 68,371.
The object of this invention is to provide a pipe stem and mouth-piece with an inner split, or two-part, tube, which may be readily withdrawn, permitting the elements thereof to be thoroughly cleaned, without disturbing the contents of the bowl. A further object is to provide a plurality of channel shaped elements, of silver, aluminum,'or other suitable material or metal, the elementshaving substantially the length of the stem and mouth-piece and being assembled to permit the formation of an approximately cylindrical duct reenforcing the usual elements of the pipe and providing a protecting lining therefor.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the. invention consists in the novel con-. struction and arrangement of elements described, illustrated and claimed, it being understoodthat modifications may be made within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming part of this application,
Figure 1' shows the pipe in longitudinal section, the special tubular attachment or duct also being illustrated in longitudinal section.
Figures 2 and 3 are perspective views showing the separate elements of the tube,
constituting the special feature of the device.
The bowl of the'pipe'is designated 10, a stem being shown at 11 and a mouth-piece being designated 12. Element 12 includes a simple projecting portion 13 fitting into socket 14 in member 11. Elements 11 and 12 are provided with the usual bores, in alignment with each other, and within this passageway, I mark the two-part element or lining constituting the improvement over the usual construction.
Figures 2 and 3 show the channel element which together form the duct, and the lower element of the completed duct is that shown in Figure 2, being designated 16. The channel portion 17 constitutes the upper half of the tube or duct, and this element 17 is shorter than member 16, whereby a projecting end 18 is provided and the side portions thereof may be cut away and provided with teeth, as illustrated. It is obvious that the rotation of the channel elements by the stem, or otherwise, will produce a variation in the draft, both by stirring up the tobacco, and when the part 18 has been partly rotated, by varying the effective size of the draft opening. Portion 18 terminates slightly beyond the central part of the bowl, at the bottom thereof, and element 17 terminates just within the wall 19.
' The channel members are each formed with an end flange such as 16 or 17, and these flanges together form an annular flange on the completed duct, this arrangement being clearly illustrated in Figure 1, and the flanges 16 and 17 having the relation shown to flange 20 of the mouth-piece 12.
By reason of this construction, the lining, may readily be withdrawn without disturbing the contents of the bowl, and the two parts may be fairly cleaned in a very short time and replaced, so that the stem and mouth piece may be maintained in strictly sanitary and satisfactory conditions.
What is claimed is:
I 1. In a smoking pipe, a bowl and a stem, a mouthpiece connected with the stem, and
a plurality of channel elements reversely arranged and passing through the stem and mouthpiece, one of said elements projecting beyond the other into the bottom of the bowl and to approximately the middle portion thereof, and including normally upward ly extending teeth, spaced from each other.
2. In a smoking pipe, a bowl and a stem, a' mouthpiece connected with the stem and a plurality of channel'elements reversely arranged and passing through the stem. and
.mouthpiece, one of said elements projecting -beyond the other into the bottom of the bowl and including spaced rows of teeth, the mouthpiece having a flanged outer end, and the channel elements, when assembled, providing an annular flange flange of the mouthpiece.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
, RAYMOND HADLEY.
